Definitions in Psychological and Emotional Health:

Burnout is defined as experiencing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization or cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment or efficacy1,2. Additionally, social isolation, is defined by Wang et al. as both objective and social contact and subjective perceived adequacy of contact3. Lastly, psychological distress is defined by Arvidsdotter et al., as a state of emotional suffering often characterized by symptoms of depression and anxiety4. These specific terms were used to best characterize the feelings of the responding orthopaedic surgeons, as they summarize many of the feelings frequently reported in the literature about physicians’ emotional health.
