Math Talk with Sterling Campbell Knots to Graphs and Back Again Title: Knots to Graphs and back again...
Sterling Campbell Myers 227 12:20pm
Friday, April 28th Free Pizza Abstract:
The connections of mathematics expand both internally and externally. Specifically the connections of Knot Theory, a branch of mathematics which studies the similarities and differences in knots. A knot is a knotted loop of string, which contains no thickness, and cross sections being single points. Knot theory was first studied through applications of chemistry. Chemists in the 1880s believed that atoms were merely knots in the fabric of the ether, and wanted to show that each element had a
corresponding knot. The internal connection, which was will look at through this talk, is between Knot Theory and Graph Theory. Can you get a graph from a knot? A knot from a graph? Additionally, we will see an application to Statistical Mechanics that came from this internal connection in mathematics.
