SAILS Test
In the fall of 2010, the Alfred University Libraries administered the Standardized Test of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS) for the second time. The purpose of the test is to measure students' ability to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information, also known as information literacy.
The libraries are excited to report that from 2007 to 2010 Alfred University students showed improved scores in seven out of eight skill sets, including retrieving sources; selecting finding tools;
understanding economic, legal, and social issues; searching; developing a research strategy;
evaluating sources; and documenting sources.
This noteworthy improvement is evidence of the success of efforts by AU's faculty and librarians to promote information literacy skills campuswide. Kudos to all!

Watch E-mail for "Excellence in Teaching Awards" Voting
On Friday, Feb. 11, e-mails will be sent opening nominations for you to confirm your support for our best and most distinguished faculty.
Please make your nominations after consideration of all professors during your time here at Alfred.
Popularity, academic advising, friendliness, and participation in student organizations should not be considered. Likewise, your own individual performance in courses should not influence your choice.
Vote for teachers whose passion, enthusiasm, preparation, and presentation forced you to think and to expand your horizons, even if you did so reluctantly at the time.
Your vote is crucial to a successful voting process. The deadline for voting will be Friday, Feb. 25, 2011.

Think B4 You Speak: Shared Stories Attention Alfred Students:
Remember the Think Before You Speak t-shirt pledge done last semester to get people to start thinking about how the things they say affect those around them?
This event focused on the usage of the phrase "That's so gay," and other derogatory phrases. There was a survey to go along with the pledge that asked students to contribute a story if they had ever been affected by the phrase, or if they ever used the phrase.
We aren't going to use these stories; although they were anonymous, people didn't know that there was a possibility of them being made public. That's where you come in. We need your stories. We would like to use them to raise awareness about the usage of these phrases in the context of Alfred University.
If you submit a story it will be completely anonymous, just know that these will be shared with the University.
Please use the attached link to submit stories!
