MULVEY NAMED TO POLICE POST

.. n . ••••••••••••••• •••••••••••••• •••••••••••••• •••••••••••••

John Mulvey, director of security at Wishard Memorial Hospital for three years, has been named the new chief of the University Police Department at IUPUI. Mulvey assumed his new duties July 1, according to Dr. Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., vice president

(Indianapolis). Mulvey's appointment is expected to be confirmed by the I.U.

board of trustees at their next meeting.

The 38-year-old Mulvey replaces Spurgeon D. Davenport who retired this month

after more than six years in the post, plus 40 years' experience with the Indianapolis Police Department.

Mulvey is responsible for the university's law enforcement agency which includes 34 professionally trained officers, 21 guards and eight student escorts who

protect people and property covering the scattered campuses of IUPUI and involving a student-faculty-staff-visitor population of about 30,000.

Mulvey actually is returning to the IUPUI police department where he served as captain and division training officer from 1974 to 1977, when he accepted the position at Wishard. He also has had four years of experience with the I.U.

Police Department in Bloomington and five years with the Otis Elevator Co. in Bloomington and Mayco Inc. at Bedford.

A native of Brookline, Massachusetts, Mulvey served four years in the United States Air Force Security Service (communications intelligence), then relocated in

Indiana.

His training includes special sessions with the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, the I.U. Center for Criminal Justice Training, the Federal Bureau of Investigation,

Americans for Effective Law Enforcement, Institutional and Municipal Parking Congress and the International Association for Hospital Security.

He currently is chairman of the Indianapolis Alliance of Hospitals' Security Committee. He plans to complete his bachelor's degree in criminal justice this academic year.

Mulvey, who lives with his wife and four children in Greenwood, enjoys painting, gardening and coaching and participating in softball and basketball in his free time.

WATT WATCHER REVISITED

Remember last summer when the campus pulled together to save thousands of dollars in electric costs during the hot season? It's that time again and a call has been made to help IUPUI reduce its electrical calorie intake.

Which means, be very careful in the use of electrical energy. Turn down, turn off, and follow the 11-point Watt Watcher Exercise Plan.

We are coming into the heavy electric usage period and anything that can be turned off between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays saves the University the most in

electrical costs, says Ralph K. Bennett, the university's electrical engineer.

The fact that it can be done was shown last year when demand was reduced at a time when it ordinarily would have increased. He cited figures of three 1979 months compared with the same 1978 months. In January kilowatt hours rose 3% and demand was up 6.6%. After Watt Watchers throughout the campus went to work in July, kilowatt hours declined 4% and demand was down 3.5%. In August, kilowatt hours declined 3.6% from the previous year and demand was down 1.9%. These records saved

the University thousands of dollars.

The 11-point watt reduction plan will be circulated again throughout IUPUI, Bennett said, and he reminded faculty and staff members to read it and beat their own record.
