PROGRAM HEADS NAMED

Dr. Neil J. Roth..~an of the National Science Foundation, Washington, D.C., was approved as professor and chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the School of Science at a meeting of the I.U. Board of Trustees Nov.

He will assume his duties July 1, replacing Dr. Michael Gemignani who resigned to become dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Ball State University.

Dr. Rothman has been program director of the modern analysis division of the mathematics and computer analysis section at NSF. While there he continued to hold his appointment as professor of mathematics at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He earned his B.A. degree at the University of Delaware, his M.S. at Tulane University and his Ph.D. at Louisiana State University.

The trustees also approved the appointment of Dr. Robert W. Keck as assistant dean of the School of Science. An associate professor of biology, he has been at IUPUI since 1972.

Dr. Frederick L. Bein, acting chairman of the Department of Geography in the School of Liberal Arts, was appointed chairman of the department.

Dr. Thomas S. Fedor, associate professor of geography, was named director of IUPUI's Office of International Programs. He will continue his teaching re- sponsibilities.

Dr. Fedor recently returned from two years in Warsaw, Poland, where he served as associate director of the Center for American Studies at Warsaw University.

He holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago.

LOCKEFIELD GARDENS TO BE RENOVATED

Lockefield Gardens, public housing development next to the campus on Indiana Avenue that has been vacant for the past seven years, and the neighborhood sur- rounding it, will be remodeled and renovated since the Department of Housinr:

and Urban Development has decided to release modernization funds for the pro- ject, it was a~nounced recently by Mayor William H. Hudnut.

"HUD's allocation of modernization funds is an important first step toward achieving the goal of a revitalized and prospering neighborhood," Hudnut said. He pointed out that determined efforts by the city, the Midtown Economic Devel- opment and Industrial Corporation, Indiana University and Wishard Memorial Hos- pital have created a strong momentum for the renovation.

"Images of Health Care" -- This hour-long television program produced by the American College of Radiology and the Dupont Company will oriF,inate live from McCormick Inn in Chicago at the annual conference of the Radiolo~ical Society

of North America from noon to 1 p.m. Monday. It will be picked up from the Public Television Satellite System by Wat 21, Medical Television, to be shown at all the usual outlets. In addition, it will be carried by NICER, Nursing Instructional Communications and Educational Resources, to be shown in the School of Nursing Auditorium, Room 103. All interested faculty members are invited to view the presentation, which includes the 28-minute film "Images of Life," recently released by the American College of Radiology. This film de- scribes the use of modern radiologic technology for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The film recently was named a recipient of the "Golden Eae;le Award"

by the Council on International Non-Theatrical Events for evidence of its suit- ability to represent the United States and American Cinematography in interna- tional film festivals abroad. For further information call ext. 4567.

Pauline Gregory, secretary in medieal records for the past four years, will retire Dec. 1. She has been with the university for 20 years, working as a secretary in social service and the School of Nursing before going to medical records.

Tune In -- Dr. Sue Kiefer Hammersmith, sociology and co-author of "Sexual Pre- ference: Its Development in Men and Women," will discuss her new book on the IUPUI Magazine Tuesday. The work, published by the Indiana University Press, was written when Hammersmith and her collaborators, Dr. Alan Bell and Dr. Mar- tin Weinberg, were associated with the Alfred C. Kinsey Institute for Sex Re- search. The program will be broadcast on WIAN-Fr~, 90.1 mh, at 4:30 p.m.

Grant Applicants Notice -- The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will close for the Thanksgiving holidays Thursday, Nov. 36, and reopen on Monday, Nov. 30. Grant applications which have an agency receipt date of Dec. 1 or earlier must be received by Research and Sponsored programs no later than Fri- day, Nov. 20.

Patient Care Research -- The 8th Annual Patient Care Research Colloquium will open at the School of Nursing with registration at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. Spon- sored by the school and I.U. Hospitals Nursing Services, the colloquium is free to I.U. participants. Continuing Education Units will be awarded to nursing attenders. The all-day program will consist of presentations and a table ses- sion. Keynote speaker is Elsie L. Bandman, Ed.D., F.A.A.N., professor of nurs- ing at Hunter College, New York. She will focus on Moral-Ethical Issues in the Nurse-Patient Relationship.

Edwin L. Gresham Perinatal Conferences -- These conferences, "The Critically Ill Newborn," on Wednesday, and "Fetal Metabolism" on Thursday and Friday, are arranged as part of the continuing medical education program of the School of Medicine to honor the memory of Dr. Gresham, professor of pediatrics and direc- tor of neonatal medicine at I.U. at the time of his death. Both programs will open at 7:30 a.m. at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel and both will feature an inter- nationally recognized faculty which will provide up-to-date practical informa- tion which can be used today. Heading the faculty will be Dr. Frederick C.

Battaglia, professor and chairman of pediatrics at the University of Colorado, internationally recognized for his contributions to the care of the critically ill newborn, and Dr. Gresham's mentor.

Labels for Riley -- The front section of labels from Campbell soups, beans, tomato and V-8 juice, and from Swanson canned foods and Franco-American pro- ducts are being collected by the Riley Hospital School to be redeemed for items used in the school program. Christmas at the Zoo -- "Jingle Bell Jungle" is the theme for the 14th annual

"Christmas at the Zoo" celebration scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 4 through 13. Thousands of Christmas lights will decorate the zoo grounds while sleigh bells and jingle bells carry out the theme in numerous holiday exhibits. Pre- sale tickets are 75¢ and include a coupon for Burger Chef french fries. They are now available at all Merchants, Indiana National, and American Fletcher National banks and from members of the Zoo guild.

WAG -- The Women's Administrative Group will meet from 11:30 a.m. to l p.m.

HONORS AND ACCOLADES

Dr. Leonard Schneiderman, dean of the I.U. School of Social Work, will head a day-long national symposium on "The New Federalism and the Social Services" at Philadelphia, Pa., Wednesday.

Development of a new rapid test for the diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease was reported Nov. 4 at the 21st Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents

and Chemotherapy held in Chicago by an I.U. School of Medicine team composed of Dr. Boonmee Sathapatayavongs, fellow in infectious diseases; Dr. Richard B.

Kohler and Dr. Lawrence J. Wheat, both assistant professors of medicine, and Dr. Arthur C. White, professor and head of the Section of Infectious Diseases.

P. Nicholas Kellum, dean of the School of Physical Education, recently was elected president of the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education and Dance. S. Sue Barrett, associate dean, was elected vice president-elect for health and safety.

Malcolm E. Boone, D.D.S., M.S.D., chairman of the graduate prosthodontic depart- ment of the School of Dentistry, has been elected to the executive council of the American Prosthodontic Society for a three-year term. The Society, founded in 1928, serves both the specialist and general practitioner to advance their knowledge in the prosthodontic field.

Neil E. Lantz, director of administrative affairs, has been elected vice chair- man of the board of directors, Indianapolis Area Chapter, American Red Cross.

He has been active as a volunteer in the Red Cross Disaster Services department since 1974 and was first elected to the board of directors in 1978. He has taught Disaster Shelter Management, chaired the statewide Red Cross Conference in 1979, and was a member of the Bi-Centennial Celebration Committee earlier this year.

Dr. Carlos A. Munoz, assistant professor of fixed and removable partial pros- thodontics at the School of Dentistry, won the annual Prosthodontic Research Competition at the annual meeting of the American College of Prosthodontists in St. Louis in October.

Dr. Rick Bein, Geography, is the co-author of "The Effects of a Blizzard on Urban Air Pollution" in the Journal of Geography, Vol. 80, No. 3, 1981. The article discusses pollution levels in Indianapolis during the blizzard of 1978.

Ella Poore, associate professor, School of Nursing, was honored as Channel 13

"Volunteer of the Week" on Oct. 19 for her volunteer work and teaching Child- birth Education Classes for Maternity Family League since 1964.

Dr. Robert H. Fortier, associate professor of psychology, School of Science, presented a paper on "The Rational Behavior Therapy Approach to Crisis Inter- vention" to a meeting of the American Counseling Association in October. He also was elected to the national board of the Association.

Dr. Rosario H. Potter, professor of dentistry, recently received an award of a three-year $123,399 grant from the National Institute of Dental Research to fund a quantitative genetic research project using within-family dentofacial data. This is her second funded NIDR grant this year. Her studies represent pioneering work on the genetic analysis of occlusion traits, tooth morphology, and odontometry on families and twins.
