Congratulations to Drs. Krista Shackelford and Lawrence Mark for finishing their dermatology residencies!
Dr. Shackelford will be dividing her time working with Drs. Jack Scherer and Cleve Francouer and Chris Nebesio in private practice in
Columbus, Indiana along with a part- time faculty position in the Department where she will be working in a weekly outpatient dermatology clinic at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Dr. Mark will join the I.U. Department of Dermatology Faculty as Assistant Professor of Dermatology. He plans to pursue his interest in cutaneous T cell lymphomas and will be the
dermatology director of the I.U. Melanoma Program. We wish our newest colleagues all the best as they represent our program here in Indiana.
DRS. SHACKELFORD & MARK FINISH RESIDENCY
The Department was thrilled to match Drs. Andrew Bridge and Ann-Marie Hyatt. Both Indiana natives, Drs. Bridge and Hyatt graduated from medical school here at Indiana University. Drs. Bridge and Hyatt will begin their internship in the Department of Internal Medicine in July, 2006 to begin their residency in dermatology in July, 2007. Congratulations and Welcome aboard to Drs. Bridge and Hyatt!
Drs. Mark, Travers & Shackelford
DR. BRIDGE AND HYATT MATCH
DRS. BROGAN AND MAJZOUB ADDED OUTSIDE OF MATCH
Two new positions were available to start July 1, 2006. The first position was due to the Department successfully obtaining an AAD grant. The second position opened with the transfer of Dr. Neda Ashourian, who is finishing her second year of residency, to Chicago to be closer to her husband. We were very fortunate to obtain two very accomplished physicians to fill these spots. Drs. Terry Brogan and Rania Majzoub were selected to join the Department outside of the match. Dr. Brogan received his M.D. from Indiana University and did his neurology residency at Vanderbilt, followed by a fellowship here at IU. Dr. Brogan is now in private practice as a neurologist and wishes to obtain dermatology training to complement his interest in neurocutaneous disorders. Dr. Majzoub did her medical training at University of Illinois (Chicago) and has spent several years in clinical and research dermatology fellowships, the last being at Northwestern University, Chicago. Welcome aboard to Drs. Majzoub and Brogan—and best of luck to Dr. Ashourian— you will be greatly missed!

Dr. Jeffrey Travers whose Project entitled
“Bacterial Products as Potentiators of Atopic Dermatitis” was funded from the National Institutes of Health as part of a 5-year ~5 million dollar program project grant awarded to IU entitled “Pathogenesis of Atopic
Dermatitis”. As part of this study, Drs.
Travers and Nico Mousdicas will be recruiting children with infected atopic dermatitis lesions to characterize bacterial products involved in making atopic
dermatitis worse. Dr. Travers recently was promoted to full Professor July 1, 2006.

KUDOS TO:
The Spring Indiana Dermatological Society Meeting was held at the I. U. Medical Center on Wednesday May 10th, 2006. Again, for the clinical meeting there were a wide variety of patients with interesting diagnoses presented. After the patient viewing, former Chair Dr. Arthur Norins was the guest lecturer. His lecture, entitled What I have Learned consisted of vignettes from his professional career, and his wisdom and experience permeated the lecture room. This was indeed a special lecture from a special colleague. A reception was held after the meeting and many of Dr. Norins’ former trainees and colleagues attended to spend time with him and his wife Mona.

Every issue of the Hackney-Norins Newsletter highlights an individual faculty member. This issue’s spotlight is Kathleen A. Townsley, R.N.
Kathleen A. Townsley, R.N. (aka K.T.) is the Nurse Manager of the Wishard Dermatology Outpatient Clinics (on the 5th floor of the Regenstrief Building).
K.T. was born and raised in an Irish-Catholic family in Logansport, Indiana. After graduating from Logansport HS in 1966, she felt that there were three career paths open to her—teacher, nun, nurse—and we all know which one she picked! K.T. graduated from Marion County General hospital with her R.N. degree in 1969, and stayed on at Marion County (now
Wishard). Following stints in inpatient
psychiatry (one year) and Obstetrics (12 years), she joined Dermatology in 1982. The rest, as they say, is history.
K.T. has achieved numerous awards as well as the respect and admiration of all for her long and distinguished service. She recently was
given the Distinguished Ambassador Award for 30 years of exemplary service. In addition, K.T.
was nominated Best Nurse in Indiana each year for the last two years (and finished in the top 10 last year). She became Nurse Manager of the Wishard Dermatology clinic in 2005. She is truly an indispensable part of the success of the Wishard Dermatology service.
K.T.’s inspirations are the patients, and she has learned much from them. Her “pet peeves” are clicking pens and tapping on desks.
When she is not running the Wishard Dermatology Clinics, she enjoys gardening, cooking treats for the residents and staff, sewing, and spending time with son Michael and daughter-in-law Kelly, and especially her two grandchildren Caroline (age 10) and Alex (age 7). She is also active in St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church.
