Sixth Annual Cutaneous Biology Course Successful
The Sixth Annual Midwestern Residency’s Cutaneous Biology Course took place at the I.U.P.U.I. Conference Center on November 9-10, 2001. Over 110 residents from various parts of North America (repre- senting 28 programs) were present, which is an impressive turnout given that the events of September 11 separated the conference by less than a month. The objective of this Course is to teach residents the importance of basic science cutaneous biology as it relates to clinical dermatology. This course, founded and organized by Dr.
Stephen Wolverton, has been recognized by the Excellence in Educa- tion Award from the AAD in 1998.
Michael Southall Ph.D., a post-doctoral research fellow working with Dr. Travers will be leaving I.U. to begin a new position as a Senior Scientist at Johnson & Johnson, Inc., New Jersey. Dr. Southall received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1999. Dr. Southall has developed considerable expertise in neurogenic skin inflammation, and will be running his own labora- tory and research program studying the mechanisms of skin inflam- mation. Congratulations to Dr. Southall!

The understanding of the diversity of cultures represented by our patients is the topic of a historic conference to be held on Friday April 12, 2002 at the Ruth Lilly Learning Center Auditorium from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Dr.
Patricia Treadwell (Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Cultural Diversity) is one of the organizers and faculty giving this CME-approved course. The keynote speaker is Robert Like, M.D., M.S., Direc- tor of the Center for Healthy Families and Cul- tural Diversity at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Like is author of numerous articles and books on issues of diversity and health care, and has been involved in the development of guidelines for physicians in the care of culturally diverse populations. For information and to register for this important conference, please contact the Indiana University School of Medicine Division of Continuing Medical Education at (317) 274-8353 or 1-800-622-4989.

Indiana and Hackney-Norins Society Represented at Up-Coming AAD Meeting
As has been a recurring theme, many members of the Hackney-Norins Society and Indiana Derma- tologists are represented as lecturers at the upcoming American Academy of Dermatology Meeting in New Orleans. The list includes: Evan Farmer, M.D. (Norfolk, VA), will be one of the faculty in the Controversies in Evidence-based Dermatology Forum. Antoinette Hood, M.D. (I.U.Derm) will speak on Intraepidermal Vesicular Dermatitis, in the Basic Dermatopathology
Course; present a case in the Advanced Dermato- pathology Symposium, and direct the Clinicopatho- logical Conference. Ginat Mirowski, D.M.D., M.D.
(I.U. Derm) will be the director of the Oral Medi- cine Symposium, and lecture on Oral Manifesta- tions of Dermatologic Syndromes. Jeffrey B.
Travers, M.D., Ph.D. (I.U. Derm) will be giving a lecture entitled Tacrolimus and Other Topical Immunomodulators, in the Therapy and How Medications Work Symposium. Patricia
Treadwell, M.D. (I.U. Derm) will be a participating faculty in a Life-threatening Pediatric Dermatoses Forum. It appears that Stephen Wolverton, M.D.
(I.U. Derm), will be the busiest, as he will be participating in the Antibiotics Forum, giving a lecture on Monitoring Systemic Therapy: Learning from Literature and Experience in Drug Actions, Reactions and Interactions Symposium, Drug Eruptions and Toxicities in the Internal Medicine Course, and giving two lectures (The Top Ten Ways Dermatologic Drugs Work & How This Knowledge Will Improve Your Clinical Skills, and New Contro- versies in Systemic Drug Delivery) in Therapy and How Medications Work, a Symposium that he is directing. Starting as an Assistant Professor here at Indiana University in 1995, Dr. Travers has estab- lished a successful cutaneous biology research laboratory and currently is the nation’s youngest dermatology department chair.
Dr. Travers grew up around 30 miles from the Indiana border in the bustling metropo-
lis of Wapakoneta, Ohio with a popula- tion of about 7000 people. He gradu- ated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the Ohio State University. He went on to medical school at Ohio State, taking a leave of absence to pursue a Ph.D. “I had always wanted to be a physician since childhood”, stated Dr. Travers, then “ while in medical school I got bitten with the ‘research bug’, and decided to try to combine clinical medi- cine and basic science research”
After completing his medical degree, and in- ternship at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Travers then headed for the mountains of Denver, Colorado. He finished his dermatology residency training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. While a dermatology resident, he pursued his research interests by training in a postdoctoral fellowship program at National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver, CO with Dr.
Robert Murphy, a world famous lipid biochemist and mass spectrometrist.
Dr. Travers had the opportunity to return to the Midwest. After being recruited by Dr. Evan
Farmer, former chair of IU Department of Derma- tology, he loaded up the family and headed for
Jeff Travers, M.D., Ph.D.

Every issue of the Hackney-Norins Newsletter highlights an individual faculty member. This issue’s spotlight is on Jeffrey B. Travers, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Dermatology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Kampen-Norins Investigator and Chair of Dermatology.
Indiana, Indianapolis that is…cornfields and basketball. That family includes his wife of 19 years, Joan (originally from Evansville, IN), his three children Justine (age 15), Jared (13), Jef- frey (11) and the dog Shiloh (36 ‘dog years’).
Dr. Travers’ area of research is skin inflamma- tion, and he works closely with Dr. Dan Spandau in the Department. Dr.
Travers has been involved in the train- ing of fellows and visiting scientists including Drs. Silvio and Mariangela Marques from Brazil, who are currently Chairs of the Departments of Dermatol- ogy and Pathology (respectively) at University of San Paulo (Botucatu), Brazil. Other fellows include Dr.
Michael Southall (see article on page one) and Dr. Lady C. Dy. Dr. Travers has received numerous awards includ- ing the Dermatology Foundation Career Development Award and the NIH Mentored Clini- cal Scientist Award (K08). His laboratory in the H.B Wells Center for Pediatric Research (Riley Hospital) is currently funded by two NIH grants.
He has more than 40 publications. Dr. Travers stated “I am excited about the future of the Department of Dermatology. We have top-notch faculty, residents, facilities, and a strong level of commitment from the University, but, more im- portantly, from the community. Three important future goals include expanding the clinical, edu- cational and research aspects of the program—I see us in the next ten years as the premier dermatology department in the Midwest, and, one of the best in the country.”
