He was able to purchase a beautiful home for his family and for one of his daughters who wanted ballet lessons. During a party with guests, the Queen of England, Barnum meets a popular singer from the plains of Europe, Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson).

Due to the popularity of her voice and beauty, Barnum saw an incredible business opportunity. Finally, Lind was brought to America for his first concert and scored big hits, which then went on his American tour with Barnum. Before Barnum returned home they were both publicized when Lind kissed Barnum on stage, not only that but the circus building was also set on fire by local thugs who disliked the immigrants and the phenomenon of 'freak' people it brought Barnum. .

This means that self-actualized people care about human races in the world because they consider other people as one family. In the movie The Greatest Showman, Barnum fulfills his basic human needs and achieves self-actualization. This conversation shows that Barnum is a person who is loved and appreciated by his family (his wife and children). This conversation shows that Barnum's wife, Charity, loves Barnum despite the fact that their lives are not full of wonders as Barnum promised. Barnum also gives love to his family and loves Charity. Therefore, Barnum will have no problem gaining the love and affection of his family. Furthermore, another proof of belongingness and need for love experienced by Barnum in the movie The Greatest Showman can be seen in the narration below:. You don't fit in. Welcome to humanity.”. The Oddities swarm around Barnum in a show of support and gratitude. TOM: "My mother kept me locked in a back room for years because she was ashamed of me. That's how it was for all of us. The characteristics of self-actualization reflected by Barnum in The Greatest Showman Movie Greatest Showman Movie.

A self-actualized person perceives the world in the sense of realism, they always see the world logically and rationally. His appreciation of the freshness of his experience can be seen in the dialogue that has been shown. They could be kind and considerate to others regardless of class, color, age, or sex, and they seemed to be completely oblivious to superficial differences between people (Feist and Feist 294). Self-actualized people do not have certain limitations in building relationships with other people, such as educational level, social class, race, skin color, or political or religious affiliation. Barnum's personality accurately captures this democratic character structure. This is confirmed by the narration and dialogue below: The Oddities swarm around Barnum in a show of support and gratitude. TOM: “My mother kept me locked in a back room for years. because she was ashamed of me. That's how it was for all of us. you pushed us into the limelight. Types of Research

Based on observation and interpretation, qualitative research is used to gain in-depth insight into human behavior, experiences, attitudes, intentions and motivations.” (Ahmad, et al. 2829). From the above information it could be concluded that the qualitative method was used to gain a deeper insight into the data analysis.

Data Organizing

  • Data Collecting Method
    • Identifying the Data
    • Watching the Movie and Reading the Movie Script
    • Classifying the Data
    • Reducing the Data
  • Type of Data

To get the specific data, this would be done by underlining some sentences, giving codes and highlighting them. Only potential data related to both formulations of the problem would be considered in this process. The first stage of the data collection method was watching the movie and reading the movie script several times.

This first phase of data collection aims to gain an understanding of the plot, the characters and the setting of the movie. Watching The Greatest Showman movie multiple times was the easiest way to get a deeper understanding of the story. After watching the movies several times, the next step was to read the screenplay of The Greatest Showman to provide a more objective perspective.

The classification was the arrangement of data into classes or groups based on the corresponding problem formulations. Two problems will be solved in this study, so there will be two tables of classified data. The final data supporting each problem formulation was stored in the table of an appendix and would be used to support the analysis in Chapter IV.

Analyzing the data

The Kinds of Human Needs Experienced by Barnum in The Greatest

  • Physiological Needs
  • Safety Needs
  • Belonging and Love Needs
  • Esteem Needs
  • Self-actualization

As described in the dialogue above, Barnum had a house for shelter and a place to stay with his wife. People will seek love and belongingness needs since their physiological needs, as well as their safety needs, are largely satisfied. They are motivated by love and belonging needs, such as the desire for friendship; desire for a spouse and children; and the need to belong to a family, a club, a neighborhood, or a nation.

Love and belonging also include some aspects of sexuality and human contact and the need to give and receive love. The need for love and belonging does not only concern friends and people, but also marriage and starting a family. This narrative shows that Barnum is a person who is loved and appreciated for his quirks, his talents and his friends.

People are free to pursue esteem needs, which include self-respect, confidence, competence, and the knowledge that others esteem them highly, to the extent that they satisfy their love and belonging needs. Barnum is an artist whose goal is to create a circus and make his wife and children happy. All of these accomplishments that Barnum achieved could be indicative of self-realization for Barnum.

The Characteristics of Self-actualization Reflected by Barnum in The

  • More Efficient Perception of Reality
  • Acceptance of Self, Others, and Nature
  • Spontaneity, Simplicity, and Naturalness
  • Autonomy
  • Continued Freshness of Appreciation

  • The Democratic Character Structure
  • Creativeness
  • Resistance to Enculturation

So when I read in the paper about people paying good money to see a short man, a tall man and a fat man, I thought - Why should they be the only ones making out. It is said in the movie that some people dislike Barnum, who opens a freak circus by recruiting oddities. They usually live simple lives in the sense that they do not need to put up a complex veneer designed to deceive the world.

In the dialogue described above, Barnum spontaneously expresses his concern about losing his circus. As in the dialogue shown above, Barnum decided to borrow money from the bank without discussing his decision with Charity. Barnum, who has come true in the film, does not have certain limitations in building relationships with people, such as level of education, social class, race, skin color, political or religious affiliation.

They are creative, imaginative and sincere, but not always in the sense of creating a work of art. All of the self-actualizing people studied by Maslow were creative in some sense of the word. Not all self-actualists are talented or creative in the arts, but they are all creative in their own way.

In the film The Greatest Showman, Barnum is described as a man who dares to make decisions. Self-actualizing people do not waste energy fighting against petty customs and rules of society.

Conclusion

Another characteristic is Autonomy, to get happiness he does not depend on others so he can make his own decisions. In the film, Barnum who has actualized himself has no limitations in building relationships with other people, such as education level, social class, race, skin color, political or religious affiliation. Barnum also has no limit to express his creativity and the last is the resistance to enculturation, as a self-actualized person, Barnum is able to resist social pressures to think or act in certain ways.
