The first topic discusses the intensity of using mobile learning tool, which includes the definition of mobile learning and types of mobile learning tool. Pegrum (2013:67) mobile learning can be observed through the nature of these mobile devices, they lead to an expansion of learning spaces and times where students can carry out their learning outside the formal educational places and also the hours of learning. formal timetables. O'Malley cited in Woodil (2011:14) said that mobile learning is any type of learning that occurs when the learner is not in a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that occurs when the learner takes advantage of learning opportunities that offered by mobile technologies.”.

Geddes cited in Woodil (2011:15) defined mobile learning as “the acquisition of any knowledge and skill through the use of mobile technology, anywhere, anytime, that results in a change in behavior”. The shift in thinking about mobile learning in terms of student movement has only occurred in the last two years. According to Petrova and Li, mobile learning has attracted considerable research interest in recent years, research topics include theories that underpin learning design and factors that influence learner experiences and influence the adoption of mobile learning, including social interaction. In addition, based on the study done at the University of Saudi Arabia by Al-Fahad (2009:118) most students indicated that mobile devices.

Based on the above definitions, the researcher would like to conclude that mobile learning is learning that uses mobile devices to acquire knowledge anywhere, anytime. Smartphones are currently seen as one of the most suitable platforms for mobile learning. In addition, notebooks and laptops have become thinner, lighter and smaller, making them even easier to use as a mobile learning tool.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher wants to conclude that types of mobile learning tools such as mobile phones, smart phones, notebook and tablet devices are very useful to use in the learning process. This is one of the reasons why English is becoming an important skill in career development. It is used as a communication system among people of the world to achieve trade, socio-cultural, science and technology goals.

  • Population and Sample
  • Research Variables and Indicators
  • Research Instrument
  • Data Collection Technique
  • Data Analysis Technique

This study had two independent variables, namely the intensity of the use of mobile learning tools in learning English and the grade point average of the students. Classification of the average score of the intensity of students using mobile learning tools in learning English: If the significant value < 0.05 means that there is a relationship between the intensity of using mobile learning tools in learning English and the average of the students.

If the significant value > 0.05 means that there is no correlation between intensity in the use of mobile learning tool to learn English and the students' grade point average. The relationship between students' intensity in the use of mobile phones and the students' grade point average. The Relationship between Students' intensity in the use of tablet computers and the students' grade point average.

The relationship between students' intensity in notebook computer use and students' grade point average. The significant value of the correlation between Intensity in the use of mobile phones in English learning and the students' grade point average was 0.462. The significant value of the correlation between Intensity in the use of smartphone in learning English and the students' grade point average was 0.316.

The significant value of the correlation between Intensity in the use of the tablet computer in English learning and the average grade of the students was 0.560. The significant value of the correlation between Intensity in the use of the notebook computer in the teaching of English and the grade point average of the students was 0.509. The relationship between the intensity in using the mobile learning tool and students' grade point average is divided into four correlations.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

Findings

The first section presents the description of students' intensity in using the mobile learning tool in teaching English, the second section describes the average grade of the students and the third section presents the relationship between the Intensity in using the mobile learning tool in teaching English and students. ' Grade point average. To collect the data, the researcher used the questionnaire that was given to the third, fifth and seventh semester students of English department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. Questionnaire scores were tabulated by summing student response scores.

The average rating of students' intensity when using a mobile learning tool in learning English is shown in the table below.

Discussions

From the application of Pearson Product Moment formula in SPSS version 20.0 to analyze the relationship between the intensity of using mobile learning tool to learn English and the students' grade point average scores of third, fifth and seventh semester students in English Department. It was described that if the significant value < 0.05, it means that there is a significant correlation, then if the significant value > 0.05, it means that there is no significant correlation. The researcher concluded that there was no relationship between intensity of using mobile phone to learn English and students' grade point average because the significant value 0.462 > 0.05.

The researcher concluded that there was no correlation between the intensity of mobile phone use in learning English and the grade point average of the students, because the significant value was 0.316 > 0.05. The researcher concluded that there was no significant correlation between the intensity of mobile phone use in English learning and that of the students. The researcher concluded that there was no correlation between the intensity of mobile phone use in English learning and the average of the students, because the significant value was 0.509 > 0.05.

The result was different: few studies reported the effect of mobile learning on student performance. Masadeh and Elfeky (2016:28) found that using the mobile phone as a mobile learning tool had quite a significant effect on student performance. Students felt that tablet PC was effective in improving their learning environment. 2013:80) also found that mobile phone use in education has a positive impact on academic performance. The result of the data analysis of the intensity of students using mobile learning tools and the average of the students shows that the correlation coefficients are close to zero. It is concluded that the intensity of the use of mobile learning resources in learning English is not related to the grade average of the students.

Conclusions

The result of the data analysis shows that all correlation coefficients were close to zero. It can be concluded that there is no relationship between the intensity of the use of mobile learning resources and the average of the students.
