Preface
Concepts, Functionality, and Cost- Effectiveness of Internet-Oriented ERP Systems
- Enterprise Resource Planning Can Be Implemented at Different Levels of Sophistication
- The Cost-Effectiveness of ERP Systems Is Always Relative to the Investments We Make and to the Job We Do
- Project Definition for a Successful Internet-Oriented Implementation of ERP
- How to Ascertain that Integrated Solutions Work Well in Daily Practice
- The Synergy in Managing Information Technology and Procurement
Therefore, it is not surprising that they have difficulties both in implementing ERP and in taking advantage of the Internet. One of the results of this intense activity in B2B auctions has been that Visteon found new business partners.
Why Killer Applications Can Be Assisted by ERP and CRM Software
- Killer Applications Create a Great Market for Hardware and Software
- Organizational Studies, Reengineering, and ERP Support
- Policies and Procedures that Can Make Reengineering More Effective
- Challenges Posed by a Multi-Site Supply Chain Implementation
- Complexity in Information Technology and Its Effects on Enterprise Resource Planning
The rationale for reorganization and restructuring is that they are essential to the company's success in a market that is more competitive than ever. This goes against the principle that off-the-shelf programming products should be used right out of the box.
ERP Solutions, Supply Chain, and Web- Based Enterprise Management
- Why Any-to-Any Access to Virtual Information Is So Important to Business Partners
- Prerequisites to the Successful Use of Web Software and the Transition to an Intelligent ERP Implementation
- A Steady Stream of Know-How Is Crucial to a Web-Based Enterprise
- Web-Based Enterprises Must Always Account for Market Shifts
- Prerequisites for a Valid Internet Infrastructure and Associated Cost Factors
On the web, this is the background for the Universal Resource Locator (URL), which gives each page in the database a standard address. One must be able to maintain the reliability and performance of the network at all times.
Contributions of ERP and the Vulnerability of the Internet Supply Chain
- Internet Commerce Must Be Supported by Sophisticated Services
- How Tier-1 Companies Use the Internet to Their Advantage
- Trading in Intangibles Has Different Requirements than Trading in Physical Goods
- Mobile Me-Commerce, Wireless Solutions, and Smart Tags
- Lessons that New Economy Companies Can Learn from Old Economy Companies
The new goal is to have 100 percent of the company's supply chain run over the Internet. Volkswagen is one of the car manufacturers that has globalized its supply chain operations through the Internet.
The Market Demand for Enterprise Resource Planning Software and Customer
- New Facilities and Constraints Connected with Enterprise Resource Planning
- Customer Relationship Management Software and Its Benefits
- Repairing the Damage of Disconnects by Paying Greater Attention to Detail
- The Impact of Management Culture on ERP, Security, and Customization
- The Trimming of Inventories Can Be Greatly Assisted by Smart Materials
- Return on Investment, Penalty Cost, and Enterprise Resource Planning
This must be done in a way that makes it possible to get the most out of the supply chain. One of the criticisms that applies to both CRM and ERP is that they lack innovative, model-based methods for managing complex projects. At the top of management's list of fears is the issue of control, or lack thereof.
In addition to the issue of openness and efficiency, there is also one of skills (see Chapter 3), costs and the necessary change in management culture. In just a short time, that customer is able to configure the vehicle over the internet and take possession of the car within days. Proponents of the penalty costing approach think that their approach can be applied to some areas where ERP is in service (eg, administrative costs).
The SupplyChain of ERP Programming Products
- Value-Added Solutions Improve the Benefits from ERP Software
- Implementing the Concept of an Open Vendor Policy with CRM
- Request for Information and Request for Offers
- Costs Matter — and So Does Return on Investment
- Vendor Credit Risk and the Wisdom of Writing One's Own Contract
User organizations that want to be at the forefront are not necessarily satisfied with the current supply chain of ERP software. In total, this is about 16 percent of the three years ABB needed, but it is feasible. Long-term evaluations ensure that the payback period of investments becomes visible in the coming years.
Another beneficial consequence of a sufficiently high ROI is the price placed on the quality of the system solution. Sometimes shortcomings on the part of the user organization poison the supplier relationship and the joint project. Here is an accurate example of what I mean by taking out insurance against the likelihood of seller failure.
Implementing Successive Releases of ERP Systems
- Distributed Processing Increases the Challenge of Implementing New Releases
- Metadata and Metaknowledge: An Upgrade No Company Should Forego
- An In-House Standard for Multi-Dimensional Software Evaluation
- Increasing the Pace of Implementation of Sophisticated Systems
- Commodity Software and Tools for Advanced Business Solutions
- Product Markup Language for the Smart Materials World
The functionality and performance criteria of the new version should be set by the company that already implements the programming product. Also note that with virtually every new release, ERP, CRM and other programming products can be configured through conceptual models linked to the system repository currently in use. Exhibit 7.3: The concept of metadata is not well understood, yet it is fundamental to modern computer applications.
Contributing to one's database should be a primary criterion in selecting and using ERP and CRM programming products. Exhibit 7.4: The metal layer is based on macroscopic knowledge, which is conceptual and can be vague. With learning systems, there is an interaction between the knowledge bank and the user interface, which contributes to the maturity of the system.
Organizational Prerequisites for Smart Materials, Automatic Identification, and Quality
The Next Frontier in Technology and in Supply Chain Management: Automatic Identification
- The Concept of Identification in a Physical World Is in Full Evolution
- Identification Is Key to Introducing Smart Technology into the Supply Chain
- Goals to Be Achieved Through Automatic Identification
- Why Automatic Identification Means Major Changes in Business Partnerships
- The Need for a Sound Policy Regarding Technical Standards
- Bit-Level Standards and Infrastructural Developments
Collaborative forecasting between the various players helps the back end of the supply chain in a significant way. More demanding than the design of the individual chip is the ability to meet the system's prerequisites. Exhibit 8.3: The connection between real and virtual worlds has traditionally been weak, but technology is helping to strengthen the bond.
However, for these two worlds – the physical and the logical – to seamlessly merge their services, the New Economy will have to reinvent the sense of connections, their nature and the way they are used. Eventually everything will be tagged and everything will be online, with the internet playing the role of the wider system. Figure 8.4: The frame of reference of smart materials contributing to the pace of the new economy With smart materials, agile, seamless interfaces and the ability of inanimate agents to communicate among themselves will automate actions that are still manual, despite fifty years of using computers .
Advances Underpinning Development and Use of the Electronic Product Code

- Can a Very Low-Cost Chip Change the Supply Chain Dynamics?
- Challenges Associated with Domain Names and Their Assignment
- Beyond Domain Names: The Object Naming Service by the Auto-ID Project
- Mobile Commerce, Internet-Enabled CRM, and Smart Materials
- Microsoft's Concept of Disaggregated Devices
If the serial number is per manufacturer, there are many copies of the same serial number in the system that identify different items. As discussed in Chapter 10, the
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the body that oversees the domain name system. We're not out of the woods yet with Internet domain names and global portability. Smart materials will be part of the game, if not central to it, mostly as separate devices (see Chapter 9.6).
The Chorafas Classification/Identification System for Supply Chain Requirements
- The Concept Underpinning a Classification Code
- Benefits Resulting from Architecturing an Identification Code
- Developing the Classification Part of a Parallel Code System
- A Matter-of-Fact Example of Classification and Further Definiens
- Coding for Organized Complexity in a Global Market
The basic code is assigned on the basis of the technical characteristics of an item (or data) as detailed in the classification code (taxonomy and
In case the user does not remember the base code, the alternative path is to start the search using the classification code: family, group, class; the entire process is handled through expert systems.[3] Remember that classification code is designed primarily to assist with classification and organization – and by extension, storage, updating, and retrieval. Pigeonholes of the group matrix used in classification work are assigned to specific components. Figure 10.9 illustrates the group matrix for components, which corresponds to the KL positions in the taxonomy.
Practical Implementations of the DCS Solution

- Why Do We Need Clear Text?
- How DCS Has Helped in Efficient Product Line Management
- Organizational Reaction to the Restructuring of Currently Prevailing Procedures
- Implementing <basic code> in a Banking Environment
- The Effects of an Improved Organization on Accounting and Logistics
Both the primary and the secondary criteria were studied in the course of the classification work. This example shows the flexibility of the classification system under discussion and the ability to adapt the taxonomy. Further definitions related to the origin began with the identification of the original provider of this
Exhibit 11.3: A bird's-eye view of the parallel coding system, including taxonomy, further definitions and identification, as used in the case study. The importance of effective interprocess communication is even greater when one realizes the contrast in requirements between the old and new approaches to computing - the latest being mobile. It is the process of ensuring that there is a plan for the acquisition and efficient use of resources in achieving the organization's goals.
A Sound Methodology for Enterprise Management: General Electric's Six Sigma
- An Infrastructure for High Quality in Products and Services
- Systematic Methodology Is the Best Friend of Enterprise Management
- Organizational Prerequisites to Ensure a Process Is in Control
- Using Six Sigma to Analyze Manufacturing Processes and Operations in the Back-Office
- Applying Six Sigma to a Sales Environment at GE Capital
- An Internet Application Can Benefit from Advanced Statistical Tools
The cornerstone for implementing the Six Sigma methodology is the ability to understand and assess customer needs and expectations. Exhibit 12.6: The difference between μ, xi, and σ, as, respectively, for the long-term and short-term distributions. A good example of Six Sigma in action comes from Camco, GE's Canadian appliance subsidiary.[7] The company had tried conventional approaches to solve a problem related to the lack of rigidity in some of them.
34;Quality measured by our customers could be the biggest differentiator we have in the next century,” says Jeff Immelt, president and CEO of GE Medical Systems (GEMS). [8] The concept of this statement is beautifully illustrated in Exhibit 12.7, which visualizes how the concept of Six Sigma enables it to meet customer requirements in an efficient manner. Statistics before Six Sigma showed that direct, immediate answers were given only 50 percent of the time.
Auditing Accounting Statements and Enterprise Resource Planning Records
The Framework of Accounting, Financial Reporting, and Auditing
- Lessons Learned from Five Centuries of Evolutionary Accounting Practice
- Understanding the Role of Accounting in the Financial System
- Why Accounting and Auditing Standards Must Adapt to the New Economy
- Both Quantitative and Qualitative Features of Accounting and ERP Are Vital to Business
- Using Cost Accounting as a Means for Solving Managerial Problems
- Rethinking the Mission of Accounting and Its Deliverables
How to use this knowledge to solve problems that arise in the management of the company. On the contrary, the rules and regulations themselves are part of the established business infrastructure. Figure 13.3 shows the four dimensions of the auditor's work and the fact that complexity tends to increase over time.
However, some implications of time sampling (proportional delay), Therblig analysis, time and motion studies, and the use of tables such as Method, Time, Measurement (MTM) remain. They are one of the pillars of ERP and CRM implementation as well as the entire management accounting. General accounting must be accurate, detailed, factual, documented and in accordance with the laws of the country.
The Auditor's Independence Is Critical to the Management of All Information Systems
- The Dynamics of Auditing Information Technology Products and Processes
- Using What Has Been Learned from Managerial Auditing of ERP and CRM
- How Can One Capitalize on the Concept of Limited Liability?
- Why the Functions of Auditing and of IT Consulting Must Be Separated
- Auditor Independence Requirements Promoted by the Federal Reserve and the Securities and Exchange Commission
Methodology for the preparation of business and financial statements of a business unit and their correct use. Reconciliation between business unit practices and consolidated results is an integral part of the auditor's responsibilities. Later, the interpretation of these records will lead to a critical analysis of the company's way of doing business.
For the first time in the history of business, it was determined that auditors must review the company's financial statements at least once a year and verify the correctness of the balance sheet. The audit firm's senior management is responsible for ensuring that there are no conflicts of interest. They also emphasized the need for a greater role of company directors in supervising the preparation of the company's financial statements.
The Ongoing Change in Information Technology's Auditing Practices
- A Model for Auditing the Implementation of IT on a Global Scale
- The IT Auditor's Obligation Is to Bring to Top Management's Attention What Is Being Done the Wrong Way
- IT Auditing Must Be Done at Different Levels of Management Control
No company can face the fierce competition of the Internet supply chain without first-class information technology. Exhibit 15.1: Investments in technology should always be commensurate with the importance of the function, and the same goes for tools. The IT department capitalized on all the competitive features of the software the firm purchased and implemented.
Part of the IT auditor's challenge is to understand both the end-user point of view and the technical point of view, and reflect both in their findings. In many cases, an auditor works primarily for and under the direction of a person or entity. At the same time, the auditor must report the findings to the audit committee of the board of directors.
