ALLIED ARTS CURRICULUM

A student who intends to enroll in a school of nursing other than the Indiana University School of Nursing must obtain written requirements for that particular school so that courses can be selected that will prepare her for admission to such school. Lambda Nu, for pre-nursing students, was organized on the Bloomington campus in 1944 to facilitate participation in professional and social activities. Other organizations in which pre-nursing students may join are listed in the university's general catalog.

BASIC NURSING CURRICULUM

The Mixed Choir is open to all students enrolled in the schools of Nursing, Medicine and Dentistry. The purpose of the Student-Faculty Government is to encourage democratic relationships among students and faculty groups by meeting and discussing issues of mutual interest and concern. The Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship is an international organization for the development of Christian community on college campuses.

The student receives full maintenance, including uniform laundry, during her three years at the school. The prerequisite year of college has been temporarily waived due to wartime conditions. Those wishing to enter the school directly from high school must rank in the top third of their graduating class and have successfully completed 16 units of work at a chartered secondary or private school.

NURSING EDUCATION

An introduction to the basic concepts of sociology, and a study of some of the outstanding social problems related to nursing. Nutrition, food and cookery, A study of the essentials of normal nutrition, food composition and the basic methods of food preparation. A course, correlated with general surgery, in which emphasis is placed on the nursing care of the surgical patient.

Obstetric nursing, a study of the nursing care given to the obstetric patient and the newborn. A study of the etiology, symptoms, treatment, prognosis, and complications of eye diseases, emphasizing the nursing care of eye patients. A study of the etiology, symptoms, treatment, prognosis, and complications of diseases of the ear, nose, and throat, with an emphasis on the nursing care of these patients.

A study of the etiology, symptoms, treatment, prognosis, and complications of abnormal conditions and diseases of the female reproductive tract. Urology, A study of the etiology, symptoms, treatment, prognosis and complications of genitourinary diseases. A course, related to Gynecology and Urology, in which emphasis is placed on the nursing care of the patient with genitourinary diseases.

Neurology and neurological nursing, a study of the etiology, symptoms, treatment, prognosis and complications of neurological diseases, with an emphasis on the nursing care of the neurological patient. Lectures were designed to provide students with an understanding of the etiology, symptoms, treatment and prognosis of the most common orthopedic conditions. Orthopedic Nursing, an introduction to the principles of postural and body mechanics as applied to all nursing and health classes, and a study of nursing care for the orthopedic patient.

Selected general public nursing experience in a formal or informal public nursing agency. Includes actual observation and participation in activities essential to the effective administration of a clinical nursing department in a hospital or similar institution.
