Program Format

Teaching students represents the ultimate experience in the Learning to Teach/Teaching to Learn program. At IUPUI, all students are prepared to teach at two developmental levels and can expect to complete two separate student teaching assignments. Teachers must be prepared to teach both content and children, so each licensing program is aligned with content standards and developmental standards.

Students in the Learning to Teach/Teaching to Learn program may work toward a specific teaching license or toward both a license and a Bachelor of Science degree.

Specific Degree Requirements

IUPUI's teacher preparation programs at both the graduate and undergraduate levels were developed to meet the 2002 Licensure Framework adopted by the Division of Standards of the Indiana Department of Education. Students may complete one of the following dual programs along with one of the above license programs. The license's development standards and school setting will be the same as the partner license, except for programs at all levels, where the dual license applies only to middle school and high school.

Complete the professional education courses as determined in the specific program, and all general education and trade courses required for recommendation by Indiana University for an initial teaching license;

Assessment in the Teacher Education Program

Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 in all courses taken for the degree;. Achieve a minimum grade of C in each professional education class and a passing grade for all student teaching while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.50 in professional education courses;.

Student Learning Outcomes

Definition: The ability of teachers to continuously develop their own complex content and pedagogical knowledge and to support the development of students' habits of continuous, purposeful learning. Definition: The ability of teachers to value and teach about diversity, inclusiveness and equality; to recognize the impact of social, cultural, economic, linguistic, geographical and political systems on daily school life; and to exploit the school's potential to minimize inequalities. Recognize and challenge deficit perspectives about and use strengths-based approaches to engage with students, families, and communities.

Degree Programs

Student Responsibilities

Graduate Programs

The degree will be one of only a handful of urban education doctorates in the country, focused on preparing scholars to study schools in complex urban environments. Faculty and students in the program will conduct community-based research designed in partnership with P-12 schools and community organizations. The collaborative community-based model will place researchers in the social context of urban education issues.

Advanced professional programs in the School of Education are committed to improving schooling by enhancing academic, social, and emotional learning, with the ultimate goal of improving social justice for all.

Admissions

The school also offers a master's degree with a special focus on field technology integration in several area school systems. Students who already have an undergraduate degree may apply to the School of Education to complete only the courses needed to obtain a teaching license provided their undergraduate GPA is 2.50 or higher. Information and a request form for transcript evaluation are available on the School of Education website (education.iupui.edu) or by calling Education Student Services at

Beginning in the fall of 2012, the IU School of Education at IUPUI will offer the first doctoral degree in education offered entirely on the IUPUI campus.

Academic Policies &

Procedures

Grading Policy

The grade Pass (P) is not awarded any grade points and is not taken into account when calculating the grade point average. A grade of Fail (F) received in a course taken with the Pass/Fail option is entered on the transcript, treated as a regular letter grade, and used to calculate the grade point average. If a student is not present during the last few weeks of a semester, the instructor may report a grade of Incomplete (I) (indicating that the work submitted is satisfactory but that the entire course has not been completed ) if the instructor has reason to believe that the absence was beyond the students' control.

By assigning a grade of I, the instructor implicitly authorizes and requests that the Registrar automatically change the I to an F at the end of the applicable time period if the student fails to complete the course to the instructors satisfaction.

Appeals

The student must have completed 75 percent of the course requirements and must have a grade I contract completed and on file. Any student who withdraws from a block course after the beginning of the fourth week of classes or drops block courses during two or more semesters must appeal to the School of Education's Appeals Committee to re-enter the program. Appeals regarding personal misconduct are not within the jurisdiction of the IUPUI Grievance Hearing Committee and are handled by the Dean of Students in accordance with the Code (VI.D).

The policy can only become effective if the course has been completed at IUPUI and repeated after the beginning of the 1976-77 academic year.

Probation, Dismissal, and Reinstatement

Students must meet the requirements for graduation as stated by the school in the IUPUI Campus Bulletin at the time of initial enrollment, or as set forth in a subsequent bulletin. Students are expected to meet single bulletin requirements for graduation, but must meet state licensing requirements in effect at the time of program completion.

Other special school or program requirements, including graduation

The School of Education requires a minimum of 124 credit hours to qualify for graduation, determined by specific degree requirements. Students must submit an application for a Bachelor of Science degree in the School of Education at the beginning of their last year of classes or at the beginning of their senior year. Application for a degree is a student's responsibility, and the School of Education will not be responsible for the graduation of students who fail to submit an application.

Because only the top 10 percent of School of Education students can receive an award, students with a GPA above 3.60 are not guaranteed this designation.

Nondiscrimation Policy

The School of Education Honors Program is part of the university-wide Honors Program at IUPUI and is available to students interested in enhancing and/or enriching their academic experience. To earn an honors degree, students must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.6 in all courses taken toward the B.S. Students must submit an Indiana State Teaching License application when the degree is posted on the transcript or when all grades for certificate-only programs are posted.

Information about the exams can be obtained from Education Student Services or through the Indiana Department of Education website (www.state.in.us/psb).

Student Organizations &

This program is built on the IUPUI Principles of Undergraduate Learning and the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) standards for teacher education. The application requires proof of passing scores on all state licensing exams as well as proof of successful completion of training for CPR-Heimlich Maneuver-AED certification. Students taking state licensing exams after September 1, 2013 must take new content tests offered by Pearson.

Services

This organization furthers the mission of the National Science Teachers Association by providing preschool teachers with support resources and professional development in science education. These organizations serve as official assemblies within the School of Education for all students on the IUPUI campus enrolled in the undergraduate or secondary education program.
