PONTONIINE SHRIMPS OF HERON ISLAND

Heron I s l a n d , i n t h e C a p r i c o r n I s l a n d g r o u p , i s a s m a l l c o r a l c a y , s i t u a t e d a t 23O26.6'S., 151°54 . 8 ' E . , n e a r t h e s o u t h e r n e n d o f t h e G r e a t B a r r i e r Reef s y s t e m , a p p r o x i m a t e l y 40 n a u t i c a l m i l e s from t h e mainland a t Cape C a p r i c o r n and 38 from B u s t a r d Head. The i s l a n d i s s u r r o u n d e d by a n e x t e n s i v e r e e f f l a t , o f a b o u t 27 km2, w i t h a c e n t r a l l a g o o n , and t h e a d j a c e n t W i s t a r i R e e f , o f a b o u t 25 km2, l i e s t o t h e s o u t h w e s t and i s s e p a r a t e d o n l y by a narrow c h a n n e l . The g e n e r a l f e a t u r e s o f t h e s e r e e f s have b e e n d e s c r i b e d by Flood (1971) and Flood and J e l l (19781, and t h e f a u n i s t i c background by Mather and B e n n e t t ( 1 9 7 8 ) .

The c r u s t a c e a n f a u n a o f t h e G r e a t B a r r i e r Reef i n g e n e r a l , and Heron I s l a n d i n p a r t i c u l a r , have been l i t t l e s t u d i e d . The r e p o r t o n t h e decapod c r u s t a c e a n s c o l l e c t e d by t h e G r e a t B a r r i e r Reef E x p e d i t i o n

(1928-29) i n c l u d e d r e f e r e n c e t o o n l y 30 s p e c i e s o f C a r i d e a , o f which o n l y 8 belonged t o t h e s u b f a m i l y P o n t o n i i n a e . S c a t t e r e d r e f e r e n c e s t o i s o l a t e d s p e c i e s have a l s o o c c u r r e d b u t much o f t h e c r u s t a c e a n f a u n a must s t i l l be c o n s i d e r e d a s l a r g e l y unknown. A s t u d y o f t h e decapods a s s o c i a t e d w i t h b r a n c h i n g c o r a l s by P a t t o n (1966) p r o v i d e d s e v e r a l new r e c o r d s t o t h e A u s t r a l i a n f a u n a , a s w e l l a s i m p o r t a n t b i o l o g i c a l

i n f o r m a t i o n , b u t l i t t l e work h a s been s u b s e q u e n t l y p u b l i s h e d .

The c a r i d e a n f a u n a o f c o r a l r e e f s p r e s e n t s a c o n s i d e r a b l e v a r i e t y o f s p e c i e s , t h a t a r e dominated by t h e members o f t h r e e t a x a , t h e

P o n t o n i i n a e , t h e Alpheidae and t h e H i p p o l y t i d a e . Although t h e s h r i m p s a r e o f t e n a b u n d a n t , t h e y a r e f r e q u e n t l y o f s m a l l s i z e and c r y p t i c

h a b i t s , s o t h a t t h e y a r e r a r e l y s e e n by c a s u a l o b s e r v a t i o n . Many have a d o p t e d a "commensal" way o f l i f e , and a r e even l e s s amenable t o d i r e c t o b s e r v a t i o n . T h i s r e p o r t d e a l s o n l y w i t h t h e s u b f a m i l y P o n t o n i i n a e , o f which t h e v a s t m a j o r i t y o f s p e c i e s l e a d commensal l i v e s . The abundance and v a r i e t y o f p o t e n t i a l h o s t s i n t h e c o r a l r e e f b i o t o p e i s i l l u s t r a t e d by t h e p a r a l l e l abundance o f t h e s e commensal s h r i m p s , which e x h i b i t a wide r a n g e o f m o r p h o l o g i c a l a d a p t a t i o n s t o t h e i r

The p r e s e n t s t u d y , o f t h e fauna of a g r e a t l y r e s t r i c t e d a r e a p r o v i d e s a good i l l u s t r a t i o n of t h e abundance and d i v e r s i t y of c r u s t a c e a n l i f e p r e s e n t a t t h e s o u t h e r n end of t h e Great B a r r i e r Reef.

The s p e c i e s h a s n o t been p r e v i o u s l y r e p o r t e d from A u s t r a l i a n waters, and t h e a s s o c i a t i o n r e p r e s e n t s a new h o s t r e c o r d . P r e v i o u s l y known o n l y from t h e type l o c a l i t y , Zanzibar, and Wasin I s l a n d , Kenya.

This s p e c i e s h a s n o t been p r e v i o u s l y recorded from A u s t r a l i a n w a t e r s . I t is known t o a s s o c i a t e w i t h sponges of t h e .genera H a l i c l o n a

and Caminus.

The type l o c a l i t y i s t h e Red Sea and t h e s p e c i e s i s a l s o known from E a s t A f r i c a , t h e Andaman I s l a n d s , Japan and t h e Tuamotu I s l a n d s .

The s i n g l e example a g r e e s very c l o s e l y with t h e d e s c r i p t i o n of t h e holotype from n o r t h e a s t e r n Madagascar, a t a depth of 210 f t . The h o s t o f t h i s s p e c i e s has n o t been p r e v i o u s l y i d e n t i f i e d , and t h e p r e s e n t r e c o r d i s only t h e second known occurrence. The s p e c i e s i s new t o t h e A u s t r a l i a n fauna.

Common i n p a i r s i n specimens of t h e black-lipped p e a r l o y s t e r , P i n c t a d a m a r q a r i t i f e r a , which a r e numerous on t h e r e e f f l a t s .

F i r s t recorded from t h e Torres S t r a i t s i n A u s t r a l i a n w a t e r s ( B a t e , 1888) and subsequently from B a t h u r s t I s l a n d , t h e Low I s l e s , Swains R e e f s , and from One Tree I s l a n d i n t h e Capricorn group. I t s d i s t r i b u t i o n e x t e n d s throughout t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c , from t h e n o r t h e r n Red Sea t o Hawaii, b u t t h e r e a r e no r e c o r d s from s o u t h e a s t e r n Polynesia. Most r e p o r t s a r e i n a s s o c i a t i o n with P i n c t a d a m a r q a r i t i f e r a L.

McNeill (1926) recorded t h i s s p e c i e s from Northwest I s l a n d , Capricorn group, b u t d i d n o t i d e n t i f y t h e h o s t . I t i s most probably from T r i d a c n a sp. r a t h e r than P i n n a , a s t h e l a t t e r a r e uncommon o r a b s e n t from t h e s e i s l a n d s . The specimens r e p o r t e d upon by Miers (1884) from Warrior Reef, T o r r e s S t r a i t s , a l s o belong t o t h i s s p e c i e s , b u t t h e

specimen from Keppel I s l a n d i s no l o n g e r i d e n t i f i a b l e . A l l a r e i n t h e c o l l e c t i o n o f t h e B r i t i s h Museum ( N a t . H i s t . )

C o r a l 1 i o c a r i s g r a m i n e a (Dana)

Abundant i n c o r a l s o f t h e genus A c r o p o r a , on Heron I s l a n d and W i s t a r i r e e f s . T h i s s p e c i e s was f i r s t r e p o r t e d from Heron I s l a n d by P a t t o n (1966) and h a s a l s o been r e c o r d e d from t h e Low I s l e s (McNeill, 1 9 6 8 ) . I t h a s been found i n a s s o c i a t i o n w i t h A c r o p o r a c o r y m b o s a , A.

c y m b i c y a t h u s , A. d i v e r s a , A. hebes, A. s q u a m o s a and A. v a r i a b i l i s . The d i s t r i b u t i o n o f t h e s p e c i e s a p p e a r s t o e x t e n d t h r o u g h o u t t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c r e g i o n , b u t t h e e x a c t i d e n t i t y o f some o f t h e

An abundant a s s o c i a t e of c o r a l s o f t h e genus A c r o p o r a on t h e r e e f f l a t , lagoon bommies and t h e r e e f s l o p e . F i r s t r e c o r d e d from Heron I s l a n d by P a t t o n ( 1 9 6 6 ) , i t h a s been found i n a s s o c i a t i o n w i t h A . d i v e r s a , A. p u l c h r a , A. c y m b i c y a t h u s and A. d i g i t i f e r a .

Also r e c o r d e d from S w a i n ' s R e e f s , i t s range e x t e n d s from t h e Red Sea t o t h e S o c i e t y I s l a n d s , b u t does n o t i n c l u d e Hawaii.

Numerous examples o f t h i s s p e c i e s have been c o l l e c t e d from c o r a l s o f t h e genus A c r o p o r a , from t h e r e e f f l a t down t o a d e p t h o f 6 0 f t . The h o s t s i n c l u d e A . h y a c i n t h u s . C . v e n u s t a e x i s t s i n two c o l o u r forms, b o t h o f which o c c u r on Heron I s l a n d .

P r e v i o u s l y r e c o r d e d from Heron I s l a n d by P a t t o n ( 1 9 6 6 ) , who s t u d i e d a d d i t i o n a l specimens from W i l l i s I s l a n d and R e s t o r a t i o n Rock, and from One Tree I s l a n d (Bruce, 1 9 7 7 a ) . H a r p i l i o p s i s b e a u p r e s i i (Audouin)

Abundant on c o r a l s of t h e genera S t y l o p h o r a and P o c i l l o p o r a on Heron I s l a n d and W i s t a r i r e e f s . The commonest p o n t o n i i n e shrimp found i n a s s o c i a t i o n w i t h t h e s e c o r a l s i n t h i s l o c a l i t y .

F i r s t recorded from Heron I s l a n d by P a t t o n (1966) t h i s s p e c i e s o c c u r s throughout t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c r e g i o n , from t h e Red Sea t o Hawaii, and E a s t e r I s l a n d , although t h e r e appear t o be no r e c o r d s from t h e g r e a t e r p a r t of t h e South P a c i f i c i s l a n d s e a s t of t h e Marshall I s l a n d s .

H a r p i l i o p s i s d e p r e s s a (Stimpson)

Comparatively uncommon a t Heron I s l a n d i n comparison w i t h H . b e a u p r e s i , b u t o c c u r r i n g i n t h e same h o s t c o r a l s .

F i r s t recorded from Heron I s l a n d by P a t t o n (1966) and a l s o known from t h e Diamond I s l e t s (Bruce, 1977a). Widespread throughout t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c r e g i o n from t h e Red Sea t o Hawaii, and e x t e n d i n g t o t h e Galapagos I s l a n d s , C a l i f o r n i a , Mexico, Costa R i c a , Panama and Columbia i n t h e E a s t e r n P a c i f i c r e g i o n .

Known throughout much of t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c r e g i o n , e x c l u d i n g t h e Red Sea, e a s t t o t h e Marshall I s l a n d s and New Caledonia.

F i r s t recorded from A u s t r a l i a from Heron I s l a n d and W i s t a r i Reef, W i l l i s I s l a n d , R e s t o r a t i o n Rock and Moreton Bay by P a t t o n (1966) and s u b s e q u e n t l y from Swains' Reefs (Bruce, 1977a). This s p e c i e s has been recorded throughout t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c r e g i o n , from t h e Red Sea t o t h e S o c i e t y I s l a n d s , e x c e p t f o r t h e Hawaiian I s l a n d s , where s u i t a b l e h o s t s do n o t occur.

P a t t o n (1966) r e p o r t e d t h e o c c u r r e n c e o f t h i s s p e c i e s a t Heron I s l a n d , t h e f i r s t r e c o r d f o r A u s t r a l i a n w a t e r s . The specimen, an

ovigerous 9, was found in a s s o c i a t i o n with t h e c o r a l A c r o p o r a

squamosa Brook (Bruce, 1969a). There have been no f u r t h e r occurrences.

P a r a t y p t o n s i e b e n r o c k i occurs throughout the Indo-West P a c i f i c region from t h e Red Sea and La Reunion t o the Marshall and Samoan I s l a n d s .

The commonest h o s t i s probably A c a n t h a s t e r p l a n c i b u t o t h e r h o s t s i n c l u d e C u l c i t a n o v a e g u i n e a e , E c h i n e a s t e r l u z o n i c u s and 5 specimens have been c o l l e c t e d

on H a l i t y l e r e g u l a r i s . H a l i t y l e r e g u l a r i s and E c h i n e a s t e r 1 u z o n i c u s r e p r e s e n t new h o s t records.

Two conspicuous colour forms occur; red and white on A c a n t h a s t e r and purple on C u l c i t a and o t h e r h o s t s .

F i r s t recorded i n A u s t r a l i a n waters from Green and F a i r f a x I s l a n d s (Bruce, 1971) and extending south t o Cutaway, New South Wales, while a l s o occurring i n t h e Dampier I s l a n d s , Western A u s t r a l i a (Bruce, 1976).

Common throughout t h e Indo-West P a c i f i c region from t h e Red Sea t o Hawaii and t h e Tuamotu I s l a n d s , a s f a r e a s t a s Panama.

Three specimens were recorded by Patton (1966) from A c r o p o r a c o l o n i e s a t Heron I s l a n d . A f u r t h e r 15 specimens have s i n c e been c o l l e c t e d from t h e same h o s t s , down t o a depth of 65 i t .

The d i s t r i b u t i o n of t h i s s p e c i e s extends from t h e n o r t h e r n Red Sea t o t h e Marshall I s l a n d s .

This r a r e s p e c i e s has n o t been previously recorded from A u s t r a l i a n waters and i s known only from t h e holotype specimen c o l l e c t e d from L i f u , Loyalty I s l a n d s and described by B o r r a d a i l e i n 1898. Like o t h e r s p e c i e s of t h e genus, it i s an a s s o c i a t e of A c r o p o r a c o r a l s but appears t o

i n h a b i t g r e a t e r depths and does n o t occur on t h e r e e f f l a t . I t i s t o be redescribed i n d e t a i l elsewhere.
