SOME MARINE BENTHIC ALGAE FROM TRUK AND KUOP, CAROLINE ISLANDS'

by Roy T. ~ s u d a ' INTRODUCTION

T r u k (Fig. 1) consists of

a

lagoon, with about 40 volcanic islands and s e v e r a l reef patches, encircled by a b a r r i e r reef. The lagoon is f r o m 45 to 65 kilometers in diameter and ranges in depth to 75 m e t e r s . Fringing r e e f s prevail along the coast of the l a r g e r lagoon islands.

Wave-washed benches, which a r e p r e s e n t along the windward coast of non-lagoon volcanic islands, a r e absent. The b a r r i e r reef with its numerous p a s s a g e s i s about 225 km in circum- f e r e n c e and h a s approximately 50 s m a l l c o r a l islets. Most of the b a r r i e r reef is awash during low tides. Kuop Atoll liesonly t h r e e k m south of the southernmost terminus of the Truk b a r r i e r reef and f o r the purpose of algal distribution is merely a southern extension of Truk.

P a s t r e c o r d s of marine benthic algae f r o m Truk can be found in seven publications, while m a r i n e algae f r o m Kuop Atoll have not been reported to date. The f i r s t pailer t o list marine algae f r o m T r u k was published by Okamura (1916) who c i t e s 27 species. In a systematic com- pilation of 484 species of m a r i n e algae f r o m the Pacific Ocean, Schmidt (1928) includes a l l the s p e c i e s reported by Okanmra and four additional s p e c i e s f r o m Truk.

During the s u m m e r of 1960, Mr. Erliani Menez, presently with the Smithsonian Oceaiio- graphic Sorting Center, made a r a t h e r extensive collection of m a r i n e benthic algae f r o m s e v e r a l islands i n the Caroline Islands while a m z m b e r of the Miami University-Collegiate Rebel Exyedition to Micronesia. The collections were s t o r e d in the Department of Botany of the University of Hawaii until 1964 when Dr. Gavino Trono, Jr., presently with the University of the Philippines, undertook the t a s k of identifying the specimens a s p a r t of h i s P11.D. dissertation under the direction of Dr. Maxwell S. Doty. In the s a m e year, Dr. George J. Hollenberg of the University of Redlands a r r i v e d a t the University of Hawaii to r e s u m e h i s studies on the r e d algal genera I'olysiplzonia and H e v p o s i l h n i a , and incorporated those s p e c i m e m that he had examined f r o m the Carolilie Islands into his p a p e r s (Hollenberg, 1968a, 1968b, 1 9 6 8 ~ ) . These publications include four s p e c i e s of Polysiplzonia and f o u r s p e c i e s of ilevposijlizonia from Truk. The r e s u l t s of Dr. Trono's study on the marine benthic algae f r o m the Caroline Islands w e r e published in two p a r t s . P a r t I (Trono, 1968) l i s t s 42 s p e c i e s of blue-.green and green algae f r o m Truk, while P a r t I1 (Trono, 1969) includes 48 s p e c i e s of brown and r e d algae f r o m T r u k and a l s o incorporates the eight species reported by Dr. Hollenberg. Altogether, in the above mentioned papers, 102 s p e c i e s of marine benthic algae have been reported f r o m Truk.

Recently, opportunities t o make additional collections of m a r i n e algae on Truk and Kuop have a r i s e n in conjunction with the "crown-of-thorns" starfish, ~ c a n t i z a ~ l e ~ p h n ~ i , studies in Micronesia. Mr. Richard H. Randall of the University of Guam took the initiative to make a 'Contribution No. 12, Micronesian Institute f o r the Natural Sciences, University of Guam.

moderate collection of marine algae from Truk and Kuop during the Westinghouse Acantilastev survey i n the s u m n w r of 1969. The following s u m m e r , the author was able to make additional collections of algae when he participated a s m e m b e r of the University of Guam's Acantlzaster monitoring team

The purpose of this paper is to provide a checklist of the s p e c i e s collected by Mr. Randall and the author. Seven additional specimi)ns collected by Mr. Asterio Takesy, formcerly a student a t the University of Guam, a r e a l s o incorporated i n t h i s paper.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The author is grateful to Mr. Wyman X. Zachary, Director of R e s o u r c e s and Developmc5nt, and to Mr. P e t e r T. Wilson, FisheriesNlmagemnntBiologist, both of the T r u s t T e r r i t o r y of the Pacific Islands, f o r their financial and logistic support during the author's stay on Truk. The author acknowledges the help of Dr. Robert S. Jones, Director of the University of Guam's Marine Laboratory, Mr. M. Rodney Struck, staff m e m b e r of the University of Guam's Marine Laboratory, and Mr. Milton McDonald, Starfish Control Specialist f o r T r u s t T e r r i t o r y , who s e r v e d a s diving coml3anions and a t t i m e s contributedspecimens to the overall collections.

DISCUSSION

Eighty-five s p e c i e s of m a r i n e benthic algae a r e reported in this paper. Forty-one s p e c i e s o r 48 percent of the listed s p e c i e s r e p r e s e n t new r e c o r d s f o r the T r u k a r e a . These s p e c i e s consist of 4 Cyanophyta, 15 Chlorophyta, 7 Phaeophyta and 15 Rhodophyta. With the addition of these species, a total of 143 s p e c i e s a r e presently known f r o m Truk. The author f e e l s that t h i s total repes;.nts ap2roximetely 75 to 8 0 percent of t h algae actually p r s s e n t on Truk. It i s .sf i n t e r e s t to note t h l t of the 41 sp?:ies re>m:ed a s new r e c o r d s , 13 .of them were fouzd exclusively in water deeper than 7 m e t e r s . The continual u s e of SCUC5.L will no doubt i n c r e a s e the number of species known f r o m Pacific islands.

One additional species is p r e s e n t in the collection which is not included in the present listing. T h i s green alga s e e m s t o r e p r e s e n t a new genus and will be reported on a t a l a t e r date.
