Learn Dewey Decimal Classification (Edition 21) first published in the United States of America by Scarecrow Press, Inc. Disclaimer: Judgments as to the suitability of the information herein for the purposes of the purchaser are necessarily the responsibility of the purchaser. The schedules are the printed, listed classes, divisions, etc. of the schedule, arranged in number order.

The index is an alphabetical list of terms used in the schedules, together with the corresponding notation. This is the ability of the scheme to allow the construction of a notation that includes elements not specifically mentioned in the schedules.

Criteria of a Successful Classification Scheme

Pure notation is the use of only one type of symbol, such as numbers, for example Dewey Decimal Classification 342,569. Mixed notation is the use of more than one type of symbol, such as numbers and letters, for example, Library of Congress Classification TK51011.H37 1994. It should contain, as far as possible, all synonyms for the term and a breakdown of parts of the subject.

Your plan should show a logical system for grouping the animals, although how you do this is up to you.

Introduction

General Characteristics of DDC Hierarchy

Tables in schedules allow aspects or aspects of one subject to be applied to another subject. For example, many aspects of certain animals and groups of animals are listed only once in the schedules, but can be added to any animal with classification numbers between 592 and 599. The relative index groups (links together) different aspects of a subject and the different classes in which they are found.

For example, 9 often represents geography or history, either in class 900 History and geography, or in the standard subdivision -09 Historical, geographic, persons treatment. Some copy cataloging sources, including cataloging-in-publication, show the segmentation of DDC numbers to easily identify shorter numbers.

Advantages of DDC

If segmentation does not appear, consult the schedules to find a meaningful reduced number. As you develop familiarity with DDC, reduction will often be possible without having to consult the schedules.

Disadvantages of DDC

PRINCIPLES OF CLA SSIFYING WITH DDC

Basic Principles of Classification 1. Place a work where it will be most useful

If the focus is not obvious, group the work into three or more themes, all of which are subsections of a broader theme, with the first higher number encompassing them all. For work on the architecture of German school buildings, the number for the architecture of school buildings is assigned before the number for Germany is added. If the work has been treated from a particular point of view, classify it in the subject, unless it has been significantly modified.

If a subject does not have a fixed place in the classification scheme, use the number of the subject to which it is most closely related. Works for and against voluntary euthanasia should be on the same number - this reinforces the principle of objectivity in the library's collection.

Call Numbers

This is easy to use, but does not arrange the works in alphabetical order by author and separates different editions of the same title. This is also easy to use and arranges the works in alphabetical order of the main entry, but some of the call numbers are the same. This places the works in approximate alphabetical order of the main entry, but more care must be taken in assigning book numbers to avoid duplication.

This arranges the works in alphabetical order of main entry, but it requires the use of the table and care to assign the book numbers correctly. It is common for the book number for biographies to be taken from the subject of the biography, rather than the author.

The Auxiliary Tables

This allows a work to be classified in its main subject and added to it using numbers from Table 1. They can be freely added when necessary to any classification number, although only one is added for a work. The standard subdivision -09 is sometimes combined with figures from Table 2 so that the geographical treatment can be linked to a specific country or place, e.g.

The more specific numbers tend to reflect the large English-speaking users of the classification scheme. Language

A similar set of options is available for Canadian literature in French, Americas literature in Spanish or Portuguese, and for other literature that requires local emphasis. Since practices vary, you should familiarize yourself with the policy and usage of a library you know well. There is a preference table to look up when works have more than one form - e.g. a play on verse.

Bilingual Dictionaries

This enables the classifier to construct a number for each subject studied by or in relation to any ethnic or national group. Although the same European accent occurs in this table, it helps the classifier to remember and locate particular numbers that appear in the schedules and some of the tables (eg, Spanish contains -6 in 400, 800 and tables 2, 5, and 6).

Preference Order

Numbers can be added either directly via an instruction, or indirectly by first adding -089 from Table 1 (which does not require a specific instruction).

ANSWERS

The relative index links topics to all their aspects by showing all the numbers for the topic in the different disciplines to which they belong. A relative index brings together different aspects of the same topic that are scattered across different disciplines. His Anglo-American bias is evident in his emphasis on American, English, and European language, literature, and history in the 400s, 800s, and 900s, and Protestantism/Christianity in the 200s.

Changing numbers due to a new edition creates practical problems in libraries, for example the need for reclassification, relabeling and rearrangement. Narrow classification means that each work is classified as specifically as possible, using all available subdivisions in the classification scheme. The glossary (in Part 1) gives the definition: "The rule instructing that works giving equal treatment to three or more subjects which are all subdivisions of a broader subject shall be classified in the first higher number which includes them all." For example, a work on the cultivation of coconuts, avocados and papayas is assigned to the number for the cultivation of tropical and subtropical fruit.

History of glassblowing in Venice in the Middle Ages Main topic: Glassblowing Secondary aspect: history Secondary aspect: in Venice. 364.44 Welfare services in the prevention of crime and delinquency 362.88 Problems and services for victims of crime. Standard subdivisions enable the classifier to make the number more specific by representing a regularly recurring form or treatment as well as the main subject.

When they would be redundant because the figure already covers the concept of the standard subdivision. To ensure that these "standard" treatments of the subject can be shelved in their groups before further subdividing the subject. The table at the beginning of Table 1 indicates which standard subdivision to use if there is more than one possible standard subdivision representing different aspects of the subject.
