Mr. Guy Cowan,
Alfred University, Alfred, N. Y.
Dear Sir:
Replying to yours of the 22nd, which came to hand about the opening of school when I was exceedingly busy, would say we sent you catalog on the 24th, which I hope has reached you by this time.
I am not in the least anxious to draw students away from my good friend Prof. Binns, whom I like and respect, and therefore I should hesitate to advise you to come to this institution for your post- graduate work. At the same time, I suppose that it is understood and admitted in all educational circles that there is some benefit to be gained by a broader study than one can make in any single institution or from any single instructor. Therefore, if you feel at the end of your course at Alfred that you would like to do work here, we shall be willing to correspond with you at that time.
I am sending Prof. Binns a carbon copy of this in order that he may be apprised of our feelings in this matter.
Yours truly,
