Data are presented as mean ± standard deviation or median (25th-75th percentile) according to their distribution using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

* 92 of the 120 patients (77%) received oxygen via a face mask.

** The worst PaO2/FiO2 ratio under NIV was measured after 1 hour in 60 patients (50%), after 6 hours in 11 patients (9.2%), after 12 hours in 20 patients (17%) and after 24 hours in 29 patients (24%).
