HOSPITAL HEAD COUNTS

The Indiana University Hospitals admitted 18,123 patients last year (not counting 1,367 newborn) and served a total of 173,629 patient days, according to the annual report recently published by the hospitals.

There were 80,578 outpatient clinic visits and 7,783 admitting room treatments.

Of the totals, 7,269 of the inpatients admitted and 49,184 of the outpatients were from Marion County. The rest were referred from the other 91 Hoosier counties.

Because clinical departments were being transferred from the older hospitals (Coleman and Long) to the new University Hospital facilities at various times during the year, adult figures are difficult to interpret.

However, figures from the Riley Hospital for Children for the past fiscal year show 6,295 patients from 91 Hoosier counties admitted. An additional 182 child patients came from outside the state. The Riley report for last year shows a total of 45,105 outpatient visits from all 92 counties.

Highlights of the total Medical Center report show that the University Hospitals and the School of Medicine used 3,155,925 pounds of linen during the year. There were 827,176 procedures performed by the Clinical Pathology Department; the Depart- ment of Nutrition and Dietetics served 520,887 meals and prepared 687,865 trays;

the medical genetics department performed 10,696 laboratory tests; the occupational therapy department gave a total of 8,756 treatments to 2,719 patients.

Also the pharmacy department filled 15,441 inpatient prescriptions and 32,286 for outpatients, and prepared 682,218 pre-packaged units; the physical therapy department gave 39,254 treatments to 18,974 patients; there were 257,966 diagnostic radiological examinations by the department of radiology; 15,000 patients were treated by the department of radiation therapy.
