ABSTRACT
Studies has suggested that parents of children with disability experiencing high stress in parenting which could compromise both the parent’s and children’s well-being. A growing number of research shows the positive effects of mindful parenting for this group of population. This review aims to discuss the studies on mindful parenting intervention for parents of children with disability from the aspects of (1) the treatment modalities used as the mindful parenting intervention (2) the research method applied in the studies (3) the effect of intervention. Six review studies were discovered from a systematic literature search, and 35 studies were extracted from the reviews. Among the modalities used in the intervention are mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), acceptance commitment therapy-based (ACT), and self-compassion. All studies used experiment, ranging from one group, no comparison, to two or more group comparison. Generally, all studies reported the positive effect of mindful parenting, especially in reducing parenting stress.
However, only one study reported the integration of spiritual and religiosity (RS) aspect within the intervention. This is inconsistent with findings pointing towards the importance of RS in the development of one’s health and well-being. In conclusion, it is suggested that more studies in integrating the RS aspect in the mindful parenting intervention research to be conducted in the future.
This is to bring a more holistic view in addressing both the parents and children well-being and mental health.
