Expand the Reflective Course Component

Integrate the GPI into Program Assessment

This made it extremely difficult to compare the virtual course with previous versions of the course. While a single assessment tool does not provide a comprehensive evaluation of intercultural competence, it can serve as a way to compare student development (Deardorff, 2009). Still, it is worth noting, based on this study, that the quantitative measurement of development may not reveal actual growth, as students are still changing.

Given the results of this study and the divergence between the quantitative and qualitative results, the GPI should not be considered a definitive measure of growth. Since the study abroad courses are each so different, the standard course evaluations did little to document any change in intercultural competence. Instead, these course evaluations provided a more general overview of the student learning experience and friendliness of the course instructor.

How we respond to Babbie's suggestion will depend on our race, ethnicity, social class, gender, ability, etc. Your job in this first task, your pre-assessment, is to take a good look at who you think you are and who society thinks you are.

In the short reading of three chapters from Low's The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb, the author describes his struggle as a Christian, Episcopal priest with a multicultural faith group. Concepts are those words or ideas that at first glance seem to be supported by simple definitions, but in reality require a lot of 'revelation' or research to understand. In intercultural communication and diversity studies, these concepts are sometimes used without a deep understanding of the history and social evolution of the idea.

We want you to develop the skill of searching for the history and development of a social category - a concept - to refine your research and analytical skills. After you find these 5 new resources, you can add current and previous course readings if you feel they apply to your topic.
