LURA Houck's silky blonde hair shines against the bright South Dakota sun as she busily goes about finishing chores on her family's sprawling ranch near Pierre, South Dakota. The 18-year-old. If you look closely, however, you will discover that the cute little "animal" is not a typical calf - it is a buffalo calf, just one of several hundred buffalo here at "Standing Butte Ranch".

Lura (pronounced "Lar'-a") is part of a family-owned corporation that operates this 2,500-person conglomerate located in the heart of South Dakota's cattle country. When she is not busy with school and her duties as FFA chapter secretary, Lura can be found hard at work on the farm, covering virtually all aspects of managing this unusual herd. Houck, Lura's father, says the more they saw the buffalo, the more the family members liked it, and soon the ranch was back to primarily producing buffalo.
