But top ag economists and analysts who gathered at the USDA's 58th annual Agricultural Outlook Conference in Washington, D.C., in November embraced the challenge with gusto.
The biggest reason is the 1981 corn crop, which looks set to reach 8.08 billion bushels, up 22 percent from a year ago. Beef production increased 2 to 3 percent in 1981 and a further increase of 3 to 4 percent is expected in 1982. Fed cattle prices will show only modest improvement over the 1981 average and feeder cattle prices may show a little more improvement as production costs decrease. Omaha steer prices may average $66 to $70 in the first half of 1982, but will be offset by larger feeder cattle supplies and large competitive beef supplies in the second.

Much preparation was required for this Depression-era trip. LURA Houck's silky blonde hair shines against the bright South Dakota sun as she busily goes about finishing chores on her family's sprawling ranch near Pierre, South Dakota. The 18-year-old. If you look closely, however, you will discover that the cute little "animal" is not a typical calf - it is a buffalo calf, just one of several hundred buffalo here at "Standing Butte Ranch".
Lura (pronounced "Lar'-a") is part of a family-owned corporation that operates this 2,500-person conglomerate located in the heart of South Dakota's cattle country. When she is not busy with school and her duties as FFA chapter secretary, Lura can be found hard at work on the farm, covering virtually all aspects of managing this unusual herd. Houck, Lura's father, says the more they saw the buffalo, the more the family members liked it, and soon the ranch was back to primarily producing buffalo.
