It's all part of the annual Woodruff Rotary sponsored FFA Swine Show.. which has helped Future Farmersbuild some of the top chapterswine programs in the entire Palmetto State. Woodruffhogs have earned grand champion honors at Spartanburg's BlueRidgeFatStockShow three out of the past four years. Today, more than half of the 128vo-ag students at Wood- . sometimes have pigs under supervision as part of their farming programs.

The program is implemented on a herd chapter basis, including cooperative marketing of the broodstock. With most mortgage financing, the young farmer must have 40 to 50 percent of the purchase price in cash. Under the default clause, he can lose his farm as he usually has no more than 30 to 60 days to make up the late payments.

For example, the seller may agree to transfer title after 50 percent of the principal is paid by the buyer. j. Provision for proper care of the farm buildings and proper land use to protect the seller during the early years of the contract.

FUTURE

FARMERS TURN

For the first time, farmers could study the plans, taxes they could expect and equipment needed—all in the quiet of their homes. At least 51 percent of the farmers will have to sign the petition to put the FFA's fire department into operation. Two new 2'/2-ton trucks, equipped with 650-gallon tanks, pumps, ladders and hoses, were ordered, and three surplus forestry fire engines destined for the district were planned.

Volunteer labor helped build truck fire halls, and a call to state fire prevention staff brought a staff member to Beloit to train willing volunteers. The three departments that made up the district fielded a chief and 12 firefighters, with the men living closest to the fire halls forming the core of each crew. Because of the distance between the hoLiza and the farrowing stalls, many steps were needed to the phone or home.

This setup makes it easy to talk to Leslie while he's working outside. If the doctor can't come to the call, Leslie gives her medical instructions, and Leslie repeats them over the intercom.

Sam became an inseminator in the Flathead Valley and in 1962 artificially bred more than 800 cows in the surrounding valley. Mar\in had a one-third interest in the family farm of wheat, oats, pasture, tobacco, beef feed and dairy cattle. At the age of nine, the current national vice president of the FFA's North Atlantic Region started a weekly egg route by wagon.

Sorted eggs and printed egg cartons brought the Teets family into the egg trade. For Jim and his former father, an Ad-N'isor, the beef and la\ers are an important part of the farm. It became increasingly difficult for the Turners to farm land worth that much in Utah's short growing season.

All the while, the future National\Vice President of the Pacific Region wasted lofty goals in school. FFA public speaking and as a ninth grade Green Hand, won third place in the state.

Their flat, scissor-like jaws scrape the lowland meadows bare, turning over every pebble in their search for the last withered blade of grass. Despite his willingness to start, Chemin must wait for the thaw to begin in the Alps; the herd may not survive a late snowstorm that hits them on a treacherous mountain pass two miles above sea level. To overlook the most trivial matters would mean a long walk for someone through the valleys and mountains to the hamlet of Bouzieyas, 16 kilometers from his shepherd's hut, nestled in the shadow of the 2,000 meter high Cimedu Voga.

Because the animals must be slowly acclimated to the freezing cold of the mountain heights, the trip would be made in 13 marches, each of \5 miles. Bastian, set the animals on their journey with the formula: "Brrrrr, veni, veni, pitchounes!" (Come on, little ones!). In the middle of the pack. The shepherds Francois and Simon urged their dogs to start poking the sheep in a top kick: “Garcon, Tambour, Brillant.

La Grise, trained to stop automatically as soon as the sheep showed the slightest hesitation, Chemin set the rear in motion. Under the slanting rays of the sun, the whole herd, enveloped in thick clouds of dust, trotted along to the merry accompaniment of their neck-bells.

UNLESS

Thus, an expert, even far away, can identify a moving herd by ear. Their tongues swept the widest part of grass possible, which their thin lips impatiently chiseled away. As the road struggled upwards along the left bank of the Durance River, we passed Mirabeau Pass from Lower Province into the Alps area.

As our march wound higher and higher along the valleys of the Verdon over traffic jammed highways, mountain peaks and snowdrifts, some sheep were found limping. Before tackling the final ascent, we recuperated for 24 hours at Bayasse, a hamlet at the foot of the 8,696-foot Restefond Pass. With a blinding crack, lightning struck the top of the pass a few feet above our heads, igniting a tongue of blue along the hot air created by it.

Marcel and I ran like mad to collect the terrified animals, risking falling over a precipice hidden in the mist. Such is the way of the great journey and the oblivion of animals and, for all Iknow, their transcendence.

On the other hand, walleye and pike row in the shallows looking for frogs and polliwogs, even if they don't really turn up their noses at minnows and worms. The ferocious musk lungs will "hit" almost anything, and marauding muskies have taken ducks, turtles and even swimming squirrels to satisfy their appetite. MICHIGAN — FFA chapters in Michigan are popular in pork chains, but few have a beef chain like the Reading chapter in Hillsdale County.

Just this spring, a local rancher, Calvin Dickinsonof Camden, started the Reading beef chain when he donated a registered Angus heifer to the chapter. Ashe explained his and Cal Dickinson's plan to build a large beef breeding herd to the county's young farmers reading section. IT'S SUMMER on the farm and the days will be filled with chores, haying and chasing those pesky stray calves. Your subjects should be "doing". not just "being". Action makes your photos interesting not only for you, but also for your friends. When taking still or action photos, be sure to find the camera angle that best frames your subject.

Set the extension lamp to the side or behind the subject at approx. half the distance you are away with the camera. Here are some final outdoor camera tips: (1) Bring the camera with plenty of flash and film. Those long, eventful days of summer can be >ours to bring a camera, film and a bit of "know-how".

The closer you are to the subject when using the flash, the less noticeable the sun shadow effect will be. Also Safe Saddlegunsafe. Its "bouncer" works independently of the lever: it must be cocked by hand before the gun is fired. This means double safety - a point that really interests you and your parents. Blued steel barrel made for great strength and precision.

Coot hunting is becoming such a popular sport that some hunters have their own conservation program. they emerge in the spring, they are laid aside until reproduction begins and the young appear above ground. This measure at least doubles the number available for hunting, as it is a sport that runs the gamut from .22 caliber to precision shooting with sophisticated equipment. This caliber is accurate within a limited range and. its effective use on clamps requires careful stalking.

The porcupine target and an animal shot in the body will invariably come to the den. As soon as the animal jumps into the burrow. hurry to the cave; then sit quietly 30 or 40 feet behind the opening. Use hollow point bullets in the long rifle load and between hunts you can periodically watch your gun so you know exactly where it is shooting over 50 yards.

If you are like most chuck hunters. you'll quickly upgrade from this type of hunting to precision shooting with one of the high-velocity center-fire loads.
