The secretary announced that the books in the library had been indexed and the bookcases locked. 71 . could be had at Mr. Stirling's office from 9 to 5, and from the caretaker at other hours. Duplicates of many of the books would be placed in the library within days, which would be available for loan. 1R.11).3.E. Shields (F.), viz., "That this Institute objects to the incorporation of Government Regulations into the Building Regulations of the City of Melbourne, which.

Irwin to share some of his experiences with interesting examples in the old country. In the case of the well-seasoned wood, if it is laid in the summer and compressed well, the planks swell from the moisture of winter and the floor rises in the form of an arch. Much of it is found in the Healesville County hardwoods, but it is common in blue gum.

A FEW NOTES ON SOLID FLOORS, ANCIENT AND

MODERN

A completely different type of floor was laid in the carriage entrance to the Midland Railway Hotel in Manchester. The chapel I spoke of earlier in the castle, and is one [of .. of the rooms in the building. Somewhere in the 17th century, a floor was laid in the nave, forming an upper story, and the rooms were paneled with oak.

In the old days, the material was used on site, and made the work interesting.

SUMMER HOLIDAY

The cost of this operation and the removal of dust from the bottom of the trousers is a lepta. In terms of rail services, the novelty was that when the station was on the far side of the road, the train entered and took off across the road near the water. To the right, going beyond the usual continental custom, chairs and refreshment tables extended across the sidewalk to the roadway.

Patras, which is next in size to Athens, lies at the foot of a low isolated ridge, in the center of which is an ancient fort. to one side several buildings stretch up its gradual slope to the summit. The background of the town was a continuous valley, beyond which lay a range of mountains considerably broken in circumference to the right. On the north side of the Gulf of Corinth, mountain ranges rose immediately from the water's edge.

A walled town on one of the steep slopes of the north side, and a collection of houses on the beach of a circular bay on the south shore, were picturesque features. Then in the village, mostly covered with fir, precipitating to the water's edge, the railway lay through a cutting. Passing through an extensive plantation of currants, it was remembered that it was to the mainland and islands of Greece that the whole world looked every year for its supply of currants.

The covering was of semi-circular tiles, generally plaited, with stones placed on either side of the hips for greater security. The cute, charming country boy soon appeared, climbing to his feet and peering into the carriage windows.

TOWARDS ATHENS

The water in that bay, unlike that which we had just left, approached in color to the sea, though I thought the blue was probably nearer, owing to the brownness of the mountains. Then spurs of the Cyclades, which splashed the water; and the bit of engineering that conceived and constructed. On a projecting foreshore stood Eleusis (or rather, the city really seemed to float on the water as truly as the solitary waterfowl nearby), a fitting birthplace of Æschylus (B.C. 523), the time of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah.

The scene of the Eleusinian Mysteries - the greatest sacrament of the religion of the ancient Greeks - was then dominated by tall chimneys, which were used, among other things, for soap making. There were also remains of the entrance to the temple of Ceres, a dignified propyla modeled on the lines of that of the Acropolis. The land around Eleusis, with its stony hills and sparse vegetation, reminded me of the now historic Ladysmith.

Almost immediately at the foot of a hill spread over a wide area, a city lay in the midst of foliage; and then the eye rested upon the first sight of the Acropolis. The railway station on the N.W. border, near the site of the Academy's olive groves - the favorite seaside resort of Plato and. A prize worth £3 3s, with a special prize of Z2 2s., kindly donated by the President, Mr Bates, to the design judged second, and a certificate of commendation for the design placed third rated.

Fyvie: "Demonstration of welding and cutting metals by the oxy-acetylene process.". with special reference to the city's new building codes). After two years of steady progress, membership and functions of the Society had grown to such an extent that new arrangements were required. Certificates will be awarded to each of them and as the qualification is passing the various examinations of the Working Men's College, these should be valuable testimonials.

Although the work of the officers is reduced with an increased income, it was thought that it would be a great help to elect a president and vice-president from among the students. The former occupants of these positions, as members of the Institute, were unable to take an active interest in the business of the Society, and as the officers have only their leisure to perform this, it will be seen that every man must make an effort to minimize their work.

R EVIEWS OF NEW BOOKS

It is far easier to grow a garden in the middle of the city of Melbourne than in many of England's manufacturing towns. Gustave Fougeres, once a member of the French School at Athens, and Professor of Greek Literature at the University of Paris (Sorbonne). By the date of the Peloponnesian War, in 413 BC, it was already the third city in Sicily, and its temples were filled with treasures.

It was the quarrel with Segasta that caused the Athenians' ill-fated expedition to Sicily. The place became a jungle and sand dunes covered the top of the Acropolis and buried the ruins. Lush vegetation invaded the houses and streets, hiding all but the heaped fragments of the temples and fortifications.

The oldest temples are of Doric energy of archaic expression of the heroic simplicity of its patriotic and religious faith and the astonishing power of this Hellenic offshoot in the west. Nixon Horsfield (A.), is an illustrated article containing a description of the buildings, singly and in combination. The Church of the Holy Trinity, Twynham, commonly called Christ Church Priory, Hampshire, is a paper by G.

The lighting of the Parthenon has long puzzled investigators, and theory after theory has been advanced and rejected. Some of the grotesque carvings in the Military Station, West Point and in the City of New York College are extraordinarily cute and tell their own story.
