That resume is part of the reason Greg was named the National Agricultural Mechanics Knowledge Winner at the National FFA Convention last November. 34; One of the junior instructors at the Columbiana County Joint Vocational School was also employed in the engine room during the summer. TomRoush, Greg's senior instructor, says, "When he came in as a junior, it was obvious he was there because he wanted to be and he wanted to learn."
Two of us in the class were interested in parts, so we worked with the teachers and they were very understanding about it. The extra effort in class and in the FFA paid off for Greg, not only in mechanics in the shop, but working in jobs during school and graduate school. Nine state officials from Wisconsin and Virginia attended the International Green Week Exhibition in Berlin, Germany from January 29th to February 9th.
The FFA officers participating in Green Week were Mark Cox, Scott Lilly and Chellie Hyre from Virginia and Bryan Higgins, AngelaCorbin, Richard Heine, Sonya Rae Granger, John Anderson and Paul Oman from Wisconsin. Agricultural engineers apply engineering to the management of land and water resources; to equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting crops; to storage and transportation; and for processing systems that convert agricultural products into food, industrial chemicals, fibers and other products for humans. SOYBUG, developed by agricultural engineers in Florida, recommends the best pesticide brands and proven application techniques to control common soybean pests. Greenhouse connects the computing revolution with a system that regulates sunlight, ventilation and temperature through a laptop.
Agricultural engineers at the University of Nebraska have developed a system of software and sensors that uses a personal computer to monitor the environment in an alpine-style greenhouse. More useful is an interest in mathematics and biological sciences and the ability to analyze problems and make correct judgments. All engineers must be able to explain their ideas both orally and in writing. For that they have to be creative.
Using a form of aquaculture, these water resources can also be a source of direct income. Aquaculture can also be the basis for a second career and is more compatible with agriculture than many of the other second careers pursued by young people. Many other countries depend on aquaculture for their fish supply. Half of the fish eaten in Israel, over a quarter of the fish eaten in China and India, and about a tenth of the fish eaten in Japan comes from aquaculture. Historically, Java protected 200,000 hectares of ponds. Rough calculations show that about 500 million cubic meters of earth were removed—by hand—to make them.
Many technical advances have occurred where there is a long history of aquaculture. Aquaculture production in both China and Japan is greater than that of the United States. This compares to an industry average of 4,224 pounds of shrimp per acre. At about five dollars per pound wholesale price, this represents a very substantial profit. Aquaculture can be an important part of diversified agriculture and, according to the National Aquaculture Development Plan, an "attractive complementary enterprise for many farmers, enabling them to maximize the income potential of land, labor and other resources".

Jon Paul from the Medford FFAC chapter seemed surprised that the students were so open about their thoughts. He said: 'I thought people wouldn't speak out so much, but they just asked questions and people wanted to talk.' 34;I need to have a more positive attitude about myself and not be so picky about the things I do. I need to slow down and do the best I can in life.”
