It is the black wheat beetle larvae that you may have seen rooting bins. Some of the adults then removed other boxes to start new colonies. fresh worm meals can be sold in fish food stores and aquariums. If you have a farm pond or small lake, you can also grow minnows for bait.

If you don't want to raise minnows. you can usually catch them from a nearby stream, lake or river. Another good bait is crabs, which are found under rocks, logs and. in the weeds of streams, rivers and lakes.

Crickets lay eggs in the sand and hatch in 15 to 25 days. Within about three months the fry become large enough to be used as bait. Screen the tops of the cans with wire mesh to keep ants out. Mice or other pests that kill or eat crickets also prevent the crickets from escaping. They can easily be grown in sinks or containers covered with mesh wire to prevent mealworms and adult beetles from escaping.

Spread a layer of chicken puree or wheat bran several inches thick on the bottom of the container. The best minnows for small lakes or ponds are the blunt minnow, fathead minnow, goldenshiner and redbellied dace.
