"We need to answer any basic questions regarding the 'right' to farm, the structure of the American farm, and the overall direction of American agriculture in the 1980s and 1990s," .. solution to solving agriculture's future problems is not very happy news for The National FUTURE FARMER FARMER. start farmers... sense. "I believe we should place our number one emphasis on keeping those people already in agriculture above board," he says. "Let's not get people falsely into agriculture until we turn it into a profitable business." Doctor Hiram Drache, agricultural historian, 31-year-old farmer and author of several books on agriculture, points out that farmers in this country were "spoiled" by the Homestead Act at the beginning. "All you had to do was leave your country, come to the United States and get 160 acres of land—the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow—and farm," he says. The farm border was officially closed by 1890, and as a result the farmers became depressed."

34;boredom and drudgery break life in the time before modern transportation and the terrible school system we had then," says Doctor Drache..do about farming is that I wish I could put my mind back in a 20-year-old body now, because the opportunities are here," he says. "And the opportunities are going to be really big down the line, as far as I'm concerned. And another thing; just because you grew up on a farm doesn't qualify you to be the operators one day," he says. "A myth that's common among farmers , is that if you're born on the farm, you have an inherent right to farm," he points out. "That's about as antiquated as it gets. We can only entrust it to the people who can do the best job of managing it: those who inherit it from top management.”

34;Young people are starting. agriculture today as in the past, but they will get better. managers than ever,” he emphasizes. “You... you can't say you're going to the farm, though, just because you were born on a farm. Now . you start farming because you can prove that you can do it. “If a young couple comes to us today and says they are having problems with the farm, I say the first thing you do is sit down and calculate your own budget; the second thing you do is work out the farm budget and forecasts for the farm. and then prove to him that you are determined, that you want to succeed.”

It's the same old song and dance about how you can't afford to buy. country. "How many children have been held back by their fathers because they were told, 'Grandpa paid $5 an acre for the land, .. we paid S50 an acre for the land, and now you want S2,500 an acre pay for the country and we can't pay it.'. Well, if that's the truth, then why do we pull the country up and throw it to the wolves?" .. he says. "Land has always been priced higher than the average farmer can afford to pay. 34;Never before in history have we had more tools to help young people start farming than today," he says firmly. "I believe there is nothing stronger than a good, dedicated, totally mechanized, well-managed young husband and wife team.

34; That's why I think it's that we got into enough crisis in the 80s that we're going to make farmers get serious about money management," he says. "The next decade will come after the next energy crisis before 1990, and.
