I would like to share the countless experiences we have had this year with so many of you fellow future farmers. For the modern farmer, only a fraction of the soil is humic; but it is the vital fraction that makes the earth bountiful.

That part of Germany is low and flat, with most of the land used for grass and pasture. The cattle were unloaded, one by one, into a crate from one of the dock's many cranes. They were included in the consignment or dairy type heifers given to families in Germany and Austria.
The boys from Maximilian-Kaller-Heim work on farms for six months in the summer and go to agricultural school for six months in the winter. Boys cycle to the farms early in the morning and return around eight in the evening. In winter they cycle about three kilometers to the agricultural school in Balve.
Last summer I was chosen to represent the field of agriculture and went with the group to the International Living Experiment.
THIS ISSUES SPECIAL
It was my most memorable experience of the summer, because there I really met the Swedish people. Clyde Rogers of the Ohio Council of Churches discussed the possibilities of such a project with state FFA officers. Through the cooperation of the farmers who heard about the project, the state association insured the animals at an average price of $150 each.
Mrs. Selwa Khoury of Lebanon accepts one of the heifers donated by the Ohio Association to her country. None of the farms we visited were without a tractor and the necessary equipment, and almost every farm had one. We visited castles and cathedrals and thought about the feudal lords who had walked there centuries before us.
Frank got an extra thrill when he was chosen by the four of us to be introduced to Princess Royal Mary, the Queen's aunt.

Those slots, invented by Frank Derry of the Forest Service, often meant the difference between a safe landing and a disastrous one. I had to be careful not to let my chute collapse between two tall trees, giving me a fatal fall from their heights. I crashed into them, spilling the air from my canopy and collecting it.
I freed myself from the jump gear and rushed to help Jim and the rest of the boys retrieve our fire extinguisher packs. We broke out tools and went to the edge of the burning forest. This team of smokejumpers and their pilot get a last-minute briefing before heading off to fight a forest fire.

All six sons in the family graduated in vo-ag from Nicholson High School, and all six were FFA members. At Ihe Father-Son Banquet last year, Herbert Oakley, the boys' father, was awarded the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree in FFA. Stevens, local teacher of vocal ional agriculture, taught all the boys in his vo-ag classes.

What makes the story even more remarkable is the fact that the Chapter has only 19 members, and most of them live in the city. In 1946, these fellows decided that if they were to receive proper vo-ag training, they would have to create their own farming conditions. Some of the men who were in the FFA at the time remember working 24 hours a day in eight hour shifts on that first tractor to meet the payments.
This includes a one and a half ton truck and a half ton truck with an enclosed rear cab with windows and a seat, making it ideal for transporting anything from two large animals to all members. They cultivate 20 hectares of school land cooperatively, besides renting or leasing eight other pieces of land ranging from one to 27 hectares. Farms include four pig houses, automatic watering, farrowing pen, feeding platforms, breeding and transport crates and the like.
