Farmers who you look at the way leaders look at them. SwitidkrofMutt, XorlhDakota Someone once called North Dakota "the state with the long furrows." 34;I don't take delivery of new equipment without Firestone tires,” he says. 34;Firestones stay clean - and I mean clean! And they're ripping out every tire I've ever used on big equipment." FFA Convention at KansasCit was an added delight for 1961 Star Farmer James Isaac Messier and Victor Butler, the new FFA National President.

The theme for the national FFA week, 17.-24. February, is "Honoring opportunities and responsibilities in rural areas." This is a challenging theme for FFA chapters and stories that should be told to the American people. A lightweight McCulloch chain looks a lot like a mechanized scout knife – it does more than just cut. The Onerugged McCulloch Engme operates any of the handy attachments shown above—and more—to help you cut firewood, prune trees, dig holes, clear brush, do a hundred and one other jobs. QUICKLY INSTALLING THE "LOAN" always supplied when it cannot be repaired on site, the G.I. Tire expert Baxter's tractor back on the job just 45 minutes after the blowout. His badly damaged tire was taken into the shop for an expert section to be repaired if not the one able to repair it. 8 pickers working that tractor would have been held for at least 2-3 hours.” says Baxter.

In the Augvist-September issue there was an article of particular interest to us in Minnesota - "MoneyToFarm With." I. I have looked forward to each issue and feel that I have benefited from the various editorials and articles. Many articles on management, public relations and controlled farming made me want to do better. The 34th National Convention of the Future Farmers of America, the last I will chair as National Advisor, is now a thing of the past.

If there is ever anything I can do for the greatest and best farm boy organization in the world, of which I am proud to be considered one of the original founders, I am at your service.

They blew in the breeze past landmarks like the top of the country's tallest city hall. Speeches, dinners and the presence of former state officers from 1929 were part of the tribute. Named America's Star Farmer - the highest honor in FFA - was James Isaac Messier, an outstanding young dairyman from Greenback, Tennessee.

Honorary degrees were awarded to 53 friends of FFA, vo-ag teachers and fathers of Star Farmers and national officers. Gold Emblem ratings v;ent to 75 chapters in the National Chapter Av/ards. Program The dairy awards were presented earlier at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa, where FFA participation was better than usual.

Other guests included foreign visitors, several former Star Farmers (most still farmers) and former members of the National FFA Band. Other speakers included Mayor Roe Bartie of Kansas City, who delivered a welcome that went up to the rafters. Entertainment included the National FFA Band, always impressive, the Firestone show with a dazzling array of beautiful girls, and the FFA Talent Show.

The toughest of all were the retired state officials, led by Lyle Carpenter of Yuma, Colorado. You can bet your new leaders will try to make the best of everyone.

Each year saw an expansion until in 1959, with the help of accumulated savings and a bank note, JamesIsaac was able to buy his own farm. That, combined with holdings from his early farming operations and a substantial increase in the value of his farm, allows him to count on a value of $4S,

He won first place at the state awards presented for outstanding achievements in dairy farming and soil and water management. JamesIsaac hasn't cut down a money tree, but he has found complete satisfaction in what he loves most: working with dairy cattle. 34. I realize that agriculture has its problems, but there will certainly always be a place for farmers in the business world.

The farm was four miles outside of town, and when the weather turned bad in the winter, Herb had to stay out in the country and look after the livestock. 34; It even doubles the value of his land in five years,” ventured Charles Krause, his vo-ag instructor for the past two and a half years. I plan to build a new pond on the farm and install a fan-shaped grazing system to make the most of the water," he says.

Meanwhile, Herb has served as treasurer and vice president of his FFA chapter and is now in a Young Farmer group. Herb's good record earned him a registered Holsfeinheifer, presented by JohnTerrell, Sears-Roebuck Foundation, and radio-TV star, Art Linkletter.

This has been the experience of all the members of the Association—who are also members of the Wharton, Texas, FFA Chapter. Here is a group of pre-eight students who share a mutual interest in earning and learning. They own equipment such as a honey extraction machine, various bee screens and smokers, and a supply of printed labels for marketing the honey.

Plans were to pool all the association's shine from the 1961 harvest and sell it wholesale to local food stores. By handling the honey in greater volume, the beekeepers plan to spend more time on production. But perhaps they are not yet ready for the advice given by one observer: "Don't get so engrossed in beekeeping that some boy steals your honey."

Vo-ag teacher Merrell Barfield helps four of his students locate their hives where bees will have a supply of nectar. Earl Neppl knows it takes good cost-of-production records to find out;'/ and how. Through algebra and geometry, Don helped Joe—on daily work, on tests.

Had Joe not stood up for him when Don had gotten into that mess with his dad.

This new concept in tractor power is the result of International Harvester Research Engineers working with engine designers from Solar Aircraft, an IH subsidiary in San Diego. It is powerful, lightweight and only 21 inches long and 13 inches in diameter allowing for a whole new concept in styling and greater operator visibility.

It runs on leaner batteries—the moving section, watching the pistons work, the crankshaft turn, the spark plugs fire—the whole thing.

PROFESSIONAL Soccer Player of the Year - the highest honor on a .. world scale - is a huge leap from an. Norman, who was sometimes called Dutchman, was born on the Che\enne River Indian Reservation in Parade. In those days, most people thought he would be a baseball pitcher because he had a lightning fast ball - but he loved football.

He served in the U.S. Navy for several years and then joined the G.I. Bill to the University of Oregon. He was good size (6 feet 4 inches) and weighed about 200 pounds, but he was not a natural runner. Jim Aiken liked the T-formation of wide-open football, which required a good passer, and Norman was what he needed.

After reporting them, he found out he was number 3 behind Jim Hard and the great Bob Waterfield. Again he found himself the jockey for most of the '49 season, though he did complete 32 of 58 passes for a decent .532 fielding percentage. In the game against Detroit, he replaced Waterfield and threw three touchdown passes in the first eight minutes of the third period.

He finished second in passing in '51 and set an NF'l record for yards gained in one game passing with 554 yards against the New. He was named outstanding player of that game and also won the Sport Magazine and Bert Bell awards, and last year the Jim Thorpe Trophy. He has an astonishing lifetime completion rating of 536, connecting on 1,553 of 2,895 passes. His passes have reached 23,611. yards and 173 touchdowns and vet, he had intercepted only 178 passes.
