NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS STENOMA FROM COSTA RICA.

Labialpalpidarkochreous;secondjointdark-shadedexternally.

Face

and head ochreousfuscous.

Thorax

ochreousfuscous with adeepblack- ish

brown

central longitudinalline. Forewings broad with evenly rather stronglycurved costa,bluntlypointed apex andstraighttermen and dor- sum;light ochreus with threedarkfuscous outwardlyobliquecross-lines asin

Stenoma

tristrigellaZellerand with a dark line around theentire edge; the firstand secondcross-linesare nearlystraightand parallel from basal third

and

from the middle of costa respectively, and both curve slightlyoutward, as theyapproach thedorsal edge; thethirdline, which

isnearerto the second than this is to the first, is bent outwardlyin a gentle curve and meets the second at theanal angle.

Hindwings

light fuscous, darker towards the

tip.

Abdomen

dark fuscous. Posterior legs lightochreous.

Alar expanse, 32-34 mm.

Labial palpi ashy gray with ochreous base.

Head

and thorax dark fuscous. Forewings shaped asin

elegans Zeller, buthardly as pronounced; dark brownishfuscous with a dusting of silveryscalesand three oblique dark-browncross-lines; these are aboutequivalentandall nearlyparallel;one

from

basal third of costa, onefrom the middle,

and

one fromapical third,thelastnearly straight across the tip ofthe wing, thetwo others gentlycurved outward as theyapproach thedorsal edge, which they

do

not quite reach.

Hindwings

dark fuscous. Both pairs of wings on the underside with bright-yellow costal edges.

Abdomen

dark fuscous above with reddish ochreous cross-bars; underside light ochreous.

Hind

legs light ochreous; tarsal jointswithtuftof hairson upperside in continuationof thetibial tuft.

Alar expanse: 34-38 mm.

Habitat: Juan Qinas, Costa Rica (Wm. Schaus).

This

species

would, on account

of its peculiar

wing- form

and

of its tuftedtarsi, fallin Zeller's

genus Loxotoma, which,

however,

as I

have shown

before,

cannot be maintained

as a

sound genus.
