The Separate Devel- opment of Paleozoic and Post-Paleozoic Insect Herbivores
AbstrRCt It has been assumed that insect herbivory was minimally developed or absent during the Late Carboniferous and Per- mian, and that ecologi- cally significant herbivore
~ietary guilds and func- ,naJ feeding groups did not arise until consider- ably later. While this canonical view remains unchallenged, recent documentation from we- tland environments in equatorial coal-swamp floras from Euramerica demonstrate that a di- verse community of insect herbivores were partitioning plant tissues in major and essentially modem ways. These data, coupled with qua- ntitative analysis of an Early Permian riparian flora, and the devastation of the end-Permian ex- tinctions, suggest that modem (Mesozoic and Cenozoic) insect clades -evolved the functional ._eding groups and broad dietary guilds that had existed during the Late Paleozoic.
