Improving Students' Reading Skills Using Writing Techniques in Second Year Students of SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar", under the thesis of Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Makassar Muhammadiyah University, under the supervision of Hj. The results of this research showed that the note-taking technique improved the reading skills of students who focused on critical (own opinion) and creative (purpose of the text). This indicated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected and that there was a significant difference between the students' reading skills before and after using the writing technique.

Therefore, I use this method to test whether the writing technique can improve the student's reading skill or not. It is important to be critical when writing and to write or draw only what you will need later and to record the information in a format that is easy to understand. The lecturer or author will organize his material in a logical way, so try to use your organizational skills when taking notes.

The Concepts of Reading

When reading an academic text, the reader recreates the meaning of the text, along with the author. The killing function is lonely, we take the reading function as a lonely killer when we read with a purpose only to fill the free time. Dalman in Nurmasita (2009:20) states that the degree of understanding desired will depend in part on the reader's intention.

One of the characteristics of the efficient reader is the extent to which he can adjust the extent of his objective. One of the most common reasons for reading is to get a general idea of a selection. Reading to find the answer to one more question is one of the general purposes of reading in primary school.

The answers are relatively easy to find when the questions are asked in the correct writing words.

Levels of Reading Comprehension

  • Literal Reading
  • Interpretative Reading
  • Critical Reading
  • Creative Reading

All writers have a purpose when they write, and usually a writer will select or emphasize facts and details that support his or her purpose, ignoring facts that do not support his reading. Critical reading is actually a two-step process: Reading for Comprehension to understand and analyze what students have read. When they are asked to evaluate a piece of writing, they need to be sure that you clearly understand what they have read.

Creative reading involves going beyond the material presented by the author, creative reading requires the readers to think as the reading is done just like critical reading, and it also requires the readers to use their imagination. While no personal reaction is wrong, it cannot be unfounded; they must relate to the content of the text and reflect a literal understanding of the material. An example of a comprehension question that requires a personal answer is: what do you like or dislike about this article.

As with an assessment question, students must use their literal understanding and their own knowledge to answer.

Discussion

  • The Increasing of the Students’ Critical Reading Comprehension
  • The Increasing of the Students’ Creative Reading Comprehension
  • The Significant Difference of T-test and T-table

In this section, the result of the findings was clearly explained for the increase of students' critical reading comprehension in terms of giving thought and creative reading comprehension focused on the purpose of the text. In the findings, the data showed that the increase in students' reading skills was significant after analyzing the t-test and t-table value. Reading comprehension in terms of critical comprehension was about understanding to know one's opinion about the text, based on the topic given by the researcher and also suitable to the needs and desires of the students.

As Burns and Smith in Murna (2012) state that critical evaluation occurs only when our students understand the ideas and information presented by the writer. The result of the data analysis with the reading test shows that the students' critical understanding in the sense of giving their own opinion has increased. Regarding critical understanding in the pre-test, students were deficient in providing their own opinion about the topic. Based on the t-test result, the researcher found that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results.

This means that there was a significant difference between the pre-test before and after teaching and learning, which was processed using the Note-Taking technique. Thus, by using Note-Taking technique, students' reading skills could be improved, especially in critical comprehension. In addition, Creative understanding in reading, It was an important aspect in reading comprehension, because a good reading should be knowing the purpose of the text.

The result of the data analysis through the reading test shows that the students' creative. The students lacked to find the purpose of the text that was related to the topic. The researcher could conclude that the use of note-taking technique was one of the good techniques that could improve students' reading skills in reading the second year students' SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 9 MAKASSAR in the academic year could be improved in critical comprehension and creative comprehension.

It means that using note-taking technique in teaching reading skills can improve students' reading skills. Note taking was interesting and useful for students studying English as a foreign language because it can improve students' reading skills.
