'Old school' hip hop artist to peform at Alfred University 1/16/01
Hip hop legend Doug E. Fresh, an "old school" performer, will headline Alfred University's second annual hip hop concert at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, in Harder Hall on the AU campus. Also appearing will be a professional break dance crew from New York City.Tickets are $10 each, and are available to students and the general public at Powell Campus Center and the Music Alley in Alfred. "Doug E. Fresh is an 'old school' hip hop legend," said Dan Napolitano, director of student activities at Alfred University. "He emerged in the early days of hip hop with contagious party rhymes. Accompanied by former partner Slick Rick, the duo created such hip hop classics as 'The Show' and 'La Di Da Di.' Unlike newer rap artists, Doug E. Fresh has a positive message and a fun approach, without the violent and sexist overtones that can mark rap today."Old school" hip hop, according to Napolitano, refers the roots of the genre, when music was performed at block parties highlighted by street deejays and break dancing crews. "Full Circle," a
professional break dance troupe, will open the Jan. 20 concert. Choreographer Ana "Rocafella" Garcia has performed in many music videos and has also been featured in The Source and Vibe magazines.More information may be obtained by contacting Napolitano at 607 871 2175.
