ON A SMALL COLLECTION OF CRUSTACEANS FROM THE ISLAND OF (3UBA.

In the earh^ spring of 1902, Dr. C. H,
Eigenmann,
of the State Universit}^ of Indiana, visited the island ofCuba
for the purposeof collecting specimens of blind lishand other forms of lifeknown
to inhabit certain limestone caverns ofthat region.The
successful result of the exploration, so far as the fishwere
concerned, has already been reported at the Pittsburg meeting of theAmerican
Association for theAdvancement
of Science, which organization hadby
a grant ofmoney
helped to defray Dr. Eigenmann's expenses, but so far as Iknow
no report has hitherto beenmade
on the miscellaneous collections.The
collection of crustaceans,which
is contained in 25 jars andvials,includes 14species. The}^
were
collected atvarious points along the seashore, in fresh-water streams,and in the caverns.Most
of the speciesarewellknown
and have beenreportedfrom
theisland; allare mentioned here, however, forthesake of completeness.Of
the threenew
species,two
belong to the subterranean faunaand are of especial 'interest in that they are the first spelaean crustaceans to berecordedfrom Cuba
and belong to genera which untilvery recently have not been suspected of adaptingthemselves to a subterranean life.In the identification of the shrimps and the Brachyura I have enjoyed the benefitof the extensiveknowledgeof thesegroupsofMiss

and small; theuropodaare well developed, the outer branch lanceolate in outline, the innermuch
broaderand veryslightly longer, and with the tipsomewhat
acuminate; both branches and the margins of the telson as well bear a rather dense fringe of hairs.Color in alcohol,white,withno markingsof
any
kind. Length,5mm.
This Isopod,which is reported
by
Dr.Eigenmann
to be abundant,is represented in the collection
by
about twenty-five specimens, allfrom the one locality.
Of
the species of C/'rokau/known
to inhabitAmerican
waters, C.mayana^ which
occurs on the coast of Yucatan and Colombia, isthe nearest relativeof the presentspecies.Between
the two, however, there are several important structural difi'erences.
The
phj^siological difierences between this speciesandall the others of thegenusmust
be verygreatto admitof its living in the subter- ranean streams of fresh water. Itmay
beadded that (Jlrolaud cxhen- sis isvery distinctfrom
Cirolanides texensis Benedict,"which occurs in the waters which flowfrom
the largeartesian well atSan Marcos, Texas.2.
ONISCUS ASELLUS
Linnaeus.Five specimens, for
which
no locality is given, appear to l)elong here.They
answer perfectly the description given by Sars''from
specimens collected inNorway. They
are doubtless importations from Europe,and
probablycame from
Spain,where
the species iscommon.

Carapacethin, verydelicate and transparent, in

slightly com- pressed near the middle of thebody
but ratherbroad anteriorly; the anteriorborder, below theeye, is produced as a broad, obtuse angle, which bears, near its lower margin, an acute, forwardly directed spine; this spine is the anterior end of an obscurelymarked
ridge, which extends obliquelydownward
andbackward
along the, sides of the carapace.The
rostrum is long, slender, compressed, and rather markedly upcurved; on its superior margin it bears arow
of six or eight slender, acute teeth,
which

obliquely forward; the inferior
margin
is unarmed; the tip of the rostrum is acuteand
reaches forward to a point opposite the distal extremities of the antennal scales.The

reduced in size, are without pigment,and
the corneal surfacecomes
to an obtuse point in front. The-first antenna has the basalsegment
well excavated above and provided with a small, acute spine at the outer distal angle; there aretwo
long and one shortflagella, the short one slightly exceeding the rostrum, the long onessomewhat
longer than the bodv.The
second antenna has the basalsegment
provided with a small spine near thedistal end; the antennal scaleis broadand
with subparallelmargins; thetip is slightly rounded, and there isa small, obtuse spine at the outer distal angle; the flagellum is slender, and about twice as longas the body.The
mandible has an incisorpor- tion with three orfoursharp teeth,asmall molar surfacewith several obtuse teeth, but is without a palpus.The
third maxilliped is not strongl}- developed and presents no characters of importance.The

first pair of pereiopods is chelate, and except for its
much
smaller size isexactly likethe second; the chela isslender and weak; thecar- pal segmentislongandslender; themeros

length, but stouter; the remaining segments short and rather thick.The
remaining pereiopods are very long and slender.The abdomen
is of theform
usual in this genus, but the sixthsegment
is neither elongate nor compressed; the telson narrows graduallyfrom
the base to the obtusely angulate tip; on theupper
surface there is on each side at about the middle and again about one-fourth the distancefrom
the tip a small, appressed spine, atthe tip thereis on each side one minute and onelong, slender spine, and in the middle a fringeof setje. Colorin alcohol,white. Length, 23mm.
Nine specimens of this interesting shrimp
were
sent to me, three from Ashton,two from
Modesta, onefrom
the cave of Jaiguan, and threefrom
the cave at San Isidro. Dr.Eigenmann
reports that they werecommon.

differ verymarkedly from
Palaemonetes antroniui Benedict, hithertoouronlyknown
blind Palsemonetes,intheshapeof thero.strum andthe character of thechela".The
shapeof the63^6isratherremark-able,even ina group,
where
through atrophytheeye tendstowardthe conical form. Iknow
of no other in which it is produced into a bluntpoint.So
far as I have been ableto ascertain, this is thefirstrecordfor thisgenus in Cuba. In the material
from
San Isidro thereis one specimen which agrees in every
way
with the types, but the othertwo
differ in such amanner
as to leadme
to believe thatasec-ond species
may
be foundto inhabit the subterranean watersof Cuba.The two
specimens just mentioned have the sixth segment of the al)domentwo
and one-half times as long as deep,and
the anteunal scaleismore
slenderand acute. Unfortunately, therostrumof one is entirely gone, while of the other only theabdomen

eyes are large and abundantly supplied with pigment.The
first antennae have the basal
segment
strongly excavated, while the outermargin
is expanded into a plate-like processwhich
bearsjust backof the rounded tip, a small spine; the three flagellaare slender.The
second antennae are very slenderand
exceed thebody
in length:the scaleisbroad
and
long, ])ut does not exceed therostrum; there isa small spine on the outer face of the basal
segment
and another on the outer margin of thescalenearits tip.The
mandibledoes not bear a palpus, theincisor portionis provided withtwo
or threesharp teeth, while the molar surface has threesouiewhatobtuse ridges.The
third maxillipeds arepediform as usual, but are small.The
second pair of pereiopods are chelate like the first pairand

slightlyin size; the carpusis longer than thehand
and the fingersare shorter than the palm.The

extended it is about25 millimeters in length.To what

of reproduction obtainsamong

cases which I have observed, thenew
