This research aims to discuss whether the use of English newspaper significantly improves students' reading comprehension. The location of this research was conducted basic problem, the researcher discussed in this final project is there any improvement in students' reading comprehension by using English newspaper materials in teaching reading to ninth grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Galesong Utara, Takalar. In the pre-test the researcher asked the student to read a short narrative text, while in the post-test the researcher also asked the students to read news articles from the English Newspaper and answer the questions in the form of multiple choice and essay questions based on the article.

The research results showed that the achievement of the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Galesong Utara, Takalar improved after using English newspaper materials. It was proved by the mean score of students' reading comprehension regarding main idea in pre-test was 41.47 and post-test was 71.81. Alhamdulillah, the author expresses many thanks for the gratitude to Allah Subhana Wata'ala for His blessing and mercy on the author during the process until the completion of this thesis.

Furthermore, the other problem that made the students not interested in learning to read in the classroom was the media. It is useful in learning English in oursrder to provide stimulation to the students. We can conclude that the media can be a massage from the teacher to the students.

In this case, she assumed that it was effective in improving the students' reading skills (Smaldino and Russel, 2005). In accordance with the aforementioned background, the researcher formulated the research question: “Does the use of English newspapers significantly improve students' reading skills?”. Theoretically, this study was designed to make an empirical contribution to the effectiveness of English newspapers in improving students' reading comprehension, especially for secondary school students.

This research focused on the use of newspaper material to determine whether or not it is effective in improving students' reading comprehension. The researcher focused on how students can understand the main idea of ​​newspaper articles.

By looking at these definitions above, it can be concluded that reading is an active process where the readers try to acquire the information given by the writer and understand what is actually the purpose of the writer. Reading aloud can be done in a group or individually it is done individually; the teacher can individually check his/her Students' ability in the pronunciation and stress of the words as well as the sentence intonation. The use of media can be very helpful in reducing the difficulties learners face in learning English as a foreign language.

According to Sadiman, Amalia (2010:9) states that “Visual media are media that can be seen and the function of visual media is to spread the massage from the sources to the receiver. Given its benefits, using text with images as visual media can be very powerful in learning to read. A newspaper can be used as a basis for extensive practice in the four language skills.

First, it can be used as a cross-cultural medium because newspapers are probably the best single source of information about the host culture and about the most important people in the host society. You can learn something about the psychology, customs and values ​​of people in the foreign culture.

Based on the teacher's suggestion, each class consisted of students who have the difference in understanding English material. The researcher asked the students to read and discuss the material in the newspaper using some techniques that they usually do. The researcher asked the students to find out the meaning of the new vocabulary they get, main idea etc.

The procedure of the treatment in the first, second, third and fourth meetings was the same, but the text of the paper is different. The researcher uses a post-test to determine the value of the treatment, regardless of whether or not the post-test result is better than the pre-test result.

Technique of Data Analysis

Conclusion there are answers, but do not reflect any reading of use in development idea.

On the other hand, the frequency and rate percentage of the students' post-test can be seen from the table is 3 (11.6%) out of the 26 students classified in. The students' improvement in reading comprehension of the text was taken from the students' average score. This means that the average score for the students' post-test was greater than the average score for the students' pre-test.

The description of data collected through pre- and post-test as explained in the previous section shows that the students' reading comprehension was improved. It was supported by the frequency and percentage of the results of the students' pre- and post-tests. Students' scores after presenting materials using English newspaper news articles in teaching reading comprehension were better than before the treatment was given to students.

The description of the data collected in the pretest showed that the students' reading comprehension was reasonable. The students had problems with the level of difficulty and the organization of the text. The students' reading comprehension improves significantly because by using English newspaper, the students were excited to know the content of the news articles.

It shows that the use of English newspaper has a positive effect on students' reading comprehension. This was evidenced by the improvement in students' reading comprehension after treatment using English newspaper news articles. Based on the findings and discussion in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that the use of English Newspaper was significant in improving students' reading comprehension.

It shows that there was a significant difference between the students' performance in learning English reading comprehension through English newspaper. This means that teaching English reading comprehension using an English newspaper can facilitate the teacher's and students' reading comprehension and can promote students' motivation to learn English. Increasing students' reading comprehension through authentic materials in the eight-year-old students in SMPN 27 Makassar.
