The researcher administered pre-test to the students, then the researcher gave the students treatment on reading ability using wall magazine media in learning. The results showed that the value of t-test is higher than the value of t-table, t-test the value of reading ability in terms of scanning was greater than t-table (14.88>2.045), it is said , that null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, it meant that there was a significance difference between the result of students' scanning in reading ability by using wall magazine as a media project of treatment. In this case, the researcher tried to find an interesting and effective way for the students to do their reading activity well.
Teachers feel that using conventional methods in teaching will be easier to supervise, control and direct students, but the students tend to become passive and less able to develop the potential that exists. Reading increases the student's knowledge, information from what they have read, the students can improve their vocabulary by reading the text and also Reading will make the students have wide knowledge. Slameto in cited Pakpahan (2016) said that there are internal factors and external factors influence the students in learning.
According to hidi (2001), the wall magazine should be eye-catching to attract the students' attention and subsequently arouse their interest in reading. It is necessary to conduct research on improving students' reading skills through wall magazine project. It allows students to imagine and explore the association between the concepts in a passage they have read Davies in susanti (2010).
When students can represent or manipulate a complex set of the passage in a creatively make a wall magazine, they can be able to analyze the constituents of the text, the researcher focused on reading skills at Senior High School 9 Makassar, because the researcher's result observation at SMAN 9 Makassar since 20. March 2018, the researcher found the students' less.
Problem statement
Objective of the Research
However, many students have difficulties in learning to read, as students often experience, or in terms of reading, English reading comprehension is one of the skills that students in Indonesia must be proficient in, as the recent tests in Indonesia's national examination have placed more emphasis on read Yusuf & Fauzan, (2016). - Procedure of wall magazine as media
A few researchers have conducted studies on the effectiveness of wall magazine media in improving students' reading ability. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of using wall magazine to improve students' motivation in writing descriptive text and to identify the improvement of students' motivation in writing descriptive text after being taught in wall magazine. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher concludes that the use of wall magazine can improve students' motivation to write descriptive text.
So the author recommends using wall journaling in writing class, especially in descriptive writing. Wardhani (2013) in her research titled “the implementation of project-based learning by using wall magazine as students' project in teaching descriptive text”. The project was wall magazine as the media to present the students' writing in the school public.
Furthermore, the purpose of this research was to know the implementation of project-based learning by using wall magazine as the students' project to teach descriptive writing to seventh graders and students' writing ability. Anawati (2016) in her research titled “wall magazine competition to increase writing skill of short functional texts”. The purpose of this study is (1) to test whether the wall magazine competition can improve the ability to write short functional texts of eighth grade students from SMP NU Nawa Kartika Kudus in the academic year 2015/2016 or not and (2) to explain how eighth grade students of SMP NOW Nawa Kartika Kudu's 2015/2016 academic year in the wall magazine competition can improve students' writing skills.
This study examined the ways in which a teacher used PjBL to teach narrative writing, student responses, and student writing outcomes in a senior secondary school. In addition, students could also produce a suitable wall magazine according to the criteria of information and entertainment. According to Nursist as cited, wardhani (2013) explains that wall magazine is one of the written communication media.
The visual presentation of wall magazine can be in a form of written, pictorial or the combination of both. Based on the explanation above the definition of wall magazine as media-based learning, the researcher will tell students the important wall magazine project to improve reading ability. After using the wall magazine as a learning piece, the researcher was given a final test or post-test to find data using the wall magazine as a learning that can help improve students' reading ability.
Research Instrument
The research population was the second grade students of SMA Negeri 9 Makassar which consisted of 1,187 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling, it takes 2 classes, the researcher took XI MIA 7 and XI MIA 8 as an experimental class consisted of 30 students. In this research, the research uses online reading test as an instrument to collect data, students read text and answer the question, give limited time to read also students need to know about the structure of writing and about the content by using wall magazine as a media to improve students' reading ability.
Procedure of Collecting Data 1. Giving the pre-test
From the results of the research in the pre-test, the researcher found that the score of the students' knowledge in reading, especially in scanning, was 60.5 (satisfactory), because the students had limited knowledge of scanning technique, little reading content and inadequate development topic, the ideas were still confusing or disturbing to students, the reading did not have a logical sequence or free text development. Based on the results of the above analysis, it can be concluded that the mean scan score before the test is lower than the mean scan score of the students after the test, which is more clearly shown in the table below. The finding refers to the average score of the students, the improvement before and after the test, and also the significance of the results of the students on the pre-test, which was evident from the data analysis.
Based on the table, it shows that improving students' reading ability by using media wall magazine in terms of scanning technique was successful. The table and graph below show the percent improvement in students' reading ability in terms of scanning before and after giving the scanning technique. The above table shows the result of the students' reading ability in terms of scanning in the pre-test and post-test, in the pre-test, 6 students (20%) received a very poor result, 5 students (16.7%) classified as poor, 19 students (63.4%) classified as disembodied performed well and very well in the pre-test.
The hypothesis was tested through inferential analysis, in this case the researcher used the t-test (test of significance) for the independent sample test, which was a test to determine the significant difference between the result of the average scores of the students in the pre-test and the post-test. the writer used t-test analysis at significance level (α) = 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = N – 1 where N = number of subjects (30 students) then the value of t-table was 2.045 t -test statistic, independent sample analysis was used. The test description of the collected data in the previous section shows that the students' reading ability has improved. It was supported by the frequency and percentage of students' score level in pre-test and post-test, between pre-test and post-test there was a different result in teaching reading using wall magazines, the researcher can say that teaching reading through wall magazine is an effective means of improving students' reading ability, which increases significantly.
The result of this research showed the improvement of the students' ability to write descriptive text. There is a lot of advantage that this media of wall magazine project for students can improve the students' reading ability in learning, also understand a lot of new vocabulary, if creativity creates the wall magazine and technique to read quickly, it can repeat for English lesson students reading a lot of text also increase students' interest in learning. For the English teacher at Senior High School 9 Makassar, the application of the wall magazine is one medium that can be considered in teaching English to help improve students' reading ability.
