WOMENS FEAR OF INDEPENDENCE IN COLETTE DOWLINGS THE CINDERELLA COMPLEX
ABSTRAK
This final project is aimed: (1) to find out the types of fear reflected by
women in The Cinderella Complex, (2) to find out the causes of women’s fear in The Cinderella Complex, and (3) to find out the way women deal with their fear.
The object of this research is a non fiction book written by Colette
Dowling and is entitled The Cinderella Complex. The data collected in this study are qualitative data. The data are in the form of utterances, sentences, phrases, and quotations in the book. The techniques used to collect the data in this research are:
reading, identifying, listing, classifying, and selecting the data from the book. The procedures of data analyzes consist of three steps: categorizing the data,
interpreting the data, and drawing conclusion.
Based on the data analysis it can be concluded that: (1) there are many types of fear reflected by women in The Cinderella Complex. They are: (a) the fear of loneliness, (b) the fear of incompetence, (c) the fear of success, (d) the fear of something new, and (e) the fear of rejection. All of those types of fear are
interrelated and interconnected to each other. (2) Women’s fear in The Cinderella Complex is caused by two main factors: (a) parents and society norms or values, and (b) wedding and divorce. (3) Women deal with their fear differently. Some of them are: (a) hiding the fear, (b) avoiding the fear, and (c) approaching and withdrawing from frightening situation. Hiding and avoiding the fear will not solve the problem of fear, yet it may deteriorate the fear. The best way to deal with the fear is to face it, approach it and withdraw from it.
Based on the result of the study, it can be suggested that people should
read and study about human psychology, including women psychology which can reveal the characteristic of women, how and why women feel fear of something and how to deal with those fears. This knowledge will be useful in understanding themselves and other people. This will lead them to act more wisely in dealing with fear or in dealing with person who feels fear.
