Background of Study

In the current era, with rapid technological advancement, the world of education in teaching learning activities, for example in smartphone there are applications that can be used for learning, such as Sapp group, quipper video etc., in 2020 the world is hit by a Covid-19 that led to all wheels life is paralyzed, in March 2020 the Covid-19 entered Indonesia, one of the affected areas was education, teaching learning process in Indonesia was carried out online until the end of 2020, with all which are problems that have also demanded teachers to be more creative to convey their material clearly, although learning, distance and the media commonly used in online lessons today, those that are Sapp group, and the Google form for elementary school to high school, in universities generally use zoom cloud and live streaming YouTube. By conducting preliminary research on English teaching learning process in the eighth grade of SMP N 2 Tanon,Sragen in the academic year 2020/2021. From those examples, it can be known that politeness strategies were used on teaching learning process.

Identification of Problems

Its purpose was to reveal the types of politeness strategies used by English teachers in teaching the learning process, so the researcher conducts a research entitled "Politeness strategies used by teachers and students in the online learning process of English teaching at SMP N 2 Tanon, Sragen in academic year.

This is defined as 'the public self-image that every member of society wants to claim for themselves'. This chapter is divided into two sub-chapters, namely research findings and discussion. The finding is intended to answer the research problem. The research finding presents the result of the data analysis of the types of politeness strategies and the dominant politeness strategies used by the teacher. and students following an online English learning process at SMP N 2 TANON in the 2020/2021 academic year. Based on the first meeting, the teacher and students used one positive politeness strategy: the utterance is a given. The teacher and the students applied four politeness strategies in the main activity of the English learning process.

The teacher found that the teacher used five politeness strategies in the initial English teaching. In the main activity, the researcher found that the teacher and students use five politeness strategies in this part. On the basis of the third meeting, the teacher and the students in the introductory part utter a positive politeness strategy.

Based on the second meeting, the teacher and students state a positive politeness strategy in the opening paragraph. In the main activity, the researcher found that the teacher and students use four politeness strategies in this section. Thus, bald recording is commonly uttered by speakers who have higher authority or more power than the hearer. The use of the shell on post strategy was reflected when the teacher uttered command to the students.

Documentation that the researcher gets from the observation process, field notes and file from the institution. In this study, the researcher knows politeness strategies of used teacher on teaching learning process.

Technique of Analyzing Data

Data reduction will be the first step in analyzing the data in this study. According to Miles, data reduction refers to the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting, and transforming the data into written field notes or transcripts. In this study, the data is in the video preliminary study on July 13, 2020 and transcription into the text.

First, analyze the data by watching the video, listen carefully, and check the data by reading the transcript to see context. According to Miles, a display is generally an organized, compressed collection of information that allows for inference and action. In this step, the researcher identified types of politeness strategies by using Brown and Levinson's politeness theory to find the dominant politeness strategy used by the English teacher.

After completing the data reduction and data display, the last steps to analyze the data in this research is to draw the conclusion. According to Miles the final conclusion may not emerge until the data collection is complete, depending on the size of the corpus of field notes; methods of saving and retrieving funding agency coding, but they are often prefigured from the start even when a researcher claims to have proceeded inductively. In this step the researcher concludes the research result based on the research problems and the theory of behavioral strategies that have been used.

Technique of Data Validation

Data triangulation, which involves collecting data through multiple sampling strategies, so that samples of data at different times and social situations and on a variety of people are gathered. Investigator triangulation, which refers to the use of more than one researcher in the field to collect and interpret data. Theoretical triangulation, which refers to the use of more than one theoretical position when interpreting data.

Methodological triangulation, which refers to the use of more than one option to collect data, such as observations and documents. The researcher combined two techniques to collect data, namely observation and document to get in-depth data.

In the teaching-learning process, positive politeness strategy used by the teacher to show her sympathy/concern with the student's condition. In the English teaching-learning process, the teacher used a bare-on-record strategy, not only to give sympathy, but also to both present and include the teacher in the teaching-learning process. There is custom to open the English teaching learning process, the teacher greets the students and the students respond.

As a Muslim, the teacher believed in giving salam and being grateful in the English teaching learning process. In the opening section, after the teacher greets the students, she asks the students for confidence and the students answer it. The researcher suggests the teacher who teaches especially English to consider more the use of politeness strategy in the delivery of the material in the classroom interaction with the students. At the beginning of the meeting, the teacher greeted the student well and then asked how the students were doing.

Conclusions

This study dealt with the use of politeness strategies used by teachers and students in English online teaching learning process at SMP N 2 TANON, SRAGEN. It was intended to reveal the types and the dominant politeness strategies used by the English teacher and students. From the result of the description and analysis of the data from this research, there are three conclusions.

Types of politeness strategies used by the teacher, from the total number of 37 statements, the researcher found that 16 of them used the strategy of bald speech, 14 the strategy of positive politeness, 5 the strategy of negative politeness and 2 strategies of Off-record. Types of politeness strategies used by students, 22 statements were found that students used during the four sessions. Second, the teacher's use of the politeness strategy was dominated by the bald notation strategy.

The result of the finding showed that the most dominant strategy of politeness by student was positive politeness strategy. The speaker uses positive politeness strategies because he can satisfy the hearer's positive argument to a degree of respect (brown and Levinson, 1992:72). This is reflected when the student gives respect to the teacher, even though they have made jokes.

By performing this strategy, students can minimize the face-threatening actions by assuring the teacher that she considers them to be of the same kind.

Suggestions

This is important because pragmatics is the study of knowing the meaning behind a sentence. Parents still play an important role in shaping the character of students, so parents are suggested to give love and education for a good attitude.
