Background of the Study

At MT's At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa, the English teacher decided 70 as the minimum standard. Furthermore, the researcher interviews the English teacher that this is caused by low students' mastery of the simple past tense.

The past tense shows an event or events that happened in the past. 4 The past tense generally shows actions that happened during the previous days. The simple past tense shows that an activity or situation started and ended at a specific time in the past.5 Example: I went to school yesterday. So the simple past tense is an action or event that happened in the past and the action or event is not related to the events now.

Verbal sentence in the simple past tense in regular verbs is formed by adding ed to the infinitive.12. Used to represent event or events that happened in the past is known or implied by the question about the time of events. It should be known that recount text can also be in the form of letters as it tells the past events to the reader.

Simple past tense is an aspect that plays an important role in mastering sentence structure, especially writing a sentence about an event that happened in the past. So, simple past tense is knowledge that the students need to master to write a sentence about an event in the past.

So the student must first master the simple past to understand and write it down. According to the statement above, if students are good at simple past, they will also write narrative text well, and if students are not good at simple past, they cannot write narrative text well. Based on the above theoretical framework, the researcher describes the paradigm, if the students have a good and perfect command of the simple past, they will also write a narrative text well, on the contrary, if the students do not have a good and perfect command of the simple past, they will not be able to write a re-text well.

There is a positive and significant correlation between simple past tense mastery and writing retell text among eighth grade students at MTs At-thohiriyah Suka Jawa. There is not a positive and significant correlation between past tense mastery and writing retell text among eighth grade students at MTs At-thohiriyah Suka Jawa. The hypothesis that the researcher asks is a positive and significant correlation between simple past tense mastery and writing retelling text among eighth grade students at MTs At-thohiriyah Suka Jawa.

Population is the generalization area consisting of objects/subjects that have certain qualities and characteristics set by the researchers for learning and then concluded.3 So the population in this study consists of all eighth grade students of MTs At- thohiriyah Suka Jawa . Sampling is part of the number and characteristics of this population.4 So, part of the numbers population that is considered data research, and it can be any one of all. In addition, Suharsimi Arikunto explains that if the number of inhabitants is less than 100 people, it is better to take the whole population as a subject, than if the number of inhabitants is more than 100 people, the sample can be used about 10-15% . or 20-25% or more.5.

Based on the explanation above, the sample of this research is 40 students at the eighth grade of students of MTs At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa in the academic year 2015/2016. So the researcher takes the entire population as a sample and it is taken by using total sampling.

In this research, the researcher will research the relationship between simple past tense mastery and writing retelling text skills, the eighth grade students of MTs At-thohiriyah Suka Jawa in the academic year 2015/2016. Change the sentence forms (from positive to negative and interrogative forms, from negative to positive and interrogative forms, and from interrogative to positive and negative forms) based on the sentence pattern in the simple past tense with be. Do not master the principle of writing and spelling words; the writing is difficult to read; not enough to be tagged. The subject of the research is the eighth grade students of MTs At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa. Each item consists of five options, while the narrative text writing skill test is given a topic, this is my vacation, students write a narrative text on the topic.

Especially for the knowledge of the past tense and the written ability to narrate the text from the notes of the English teacher there. Then, the researcher will use the method to obtain a general description of the research area, mastery of the past tense and ability to write a narrative text of eighth grade students at MTs At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa.

Research Instrument

The document method is used to get information about the condition and situation of MTs At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa. The instrument is a tool used to measure the observed natural and social phenomena.12 So, research instrument is a tool or facilities used by the researcher to collect the data better, comprehensively and systematically so that data can be used easily. The observation method tool is data obtained through direct observation at MTs At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa.

According to sugiyono that the design of the instrument more systematically, so that it is easy to check, correct and consult with experts before the instrument is compiled into instrument articles should be done to the network instruments. 13 While the grid instrument are the design drafting instruments.14. Complete the broken sentence with to be in the appropriate past tense to make a meaningful sentence. Complete the divided sentences with the appropriate past tense verb to make a meaningful sentence.

Write a short text and simply in the form of narration/narrative with the rhetoric of the right. To investigate whether there is any positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension in the eighth grade students of MTs At-Thohiriyah Suka Jawa in academic year of the research, analyze the data using Product-Moment Pearson correlation.

Hypothesis Testing

Based on calculations and data analysis using the product moment Pearson correlation formula obtained, the "r observed" value is 0.863. 0.863 is placed between and it can be inferred that there is high correlation between students' simple past tense mastery and retell text writing ability among the eighth graders at Mts At-Thohiriyah Sukajawa in the academic year 2015/2016.

DISCUSSION

The variable was tested using Pearson's product-moment correlation calculation to investigate whether there was a correlation between students. It showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between a student's mastery of the simple past tense and the ability to write a narrative text. The simple past is one aspect that plays an important role in mastering sentence structure, especially when writing a sentence about an event that happened in the past.

So the students must first master the simple past tense in order to understand and write it. The result of this research can give the teacher insight into teaching the recount text, so the first step is to explain more about the simple past tense.

LIMITATION

This writer was won in the lesson English on the simple past tense and retelling text on eighth grades by Mts At-Thohiriyah Sukajawa in the academic year 2015/2016.
