In a recent article explaining his hopes for the future of the magazine, he wrote: "What is my goal. The goal was to find out which member of the group possessed the hidden "power" to make things A snowy day in January found me on my fourth different classroom visit of the day.

MAYBE MY TIME IS UP

Only when I am satisfied, and Socrates said: 'contentment is death'. We can always achieve a goal or a new dream. When you are sick, it helps to have someone hold your hand and let the warmth of his love for you penetrate you.'

MANY SIMPLE ACTS

You see, that championship football team or these speakers or the President of the United States didn't become big overnight. It was through a series of successful days and simple actions that they were able to achieve their lofty goals. And your acts of kindness, faith, inspiration and motivation made it all worthwhile for this country boy from Yanceyville, North Carolina.

In 1974, I remember a gullible, naive, country boy in his Greenhand FFA year at Bartlett Yancey High School. And if I had spent too much time celebrating the achievement of that goal, I wouldn't have been able to experience the daily joys, challenges, and frustrations of living that dream. And for me, the last 365 days have been each very unique and very fantastic.

CARRY ON

Amazing because while I was talking to him he didn't tell me how awful it was for a man to lose both his legs in the prime of life, to not be able to do the things he would have liked to have done when he was twenty-four. operations. He was concerned about some of the students and how they were doing with projects, refereeing teams, officer activities and talked about how much he was looking forward to seeing and working with them again. He said he was sorry he couldn't be here, but he had a lot to do at home and school.

THAT FINAL CHANCE

You will continue to be strong and strong if you treat every FFA opportunity as your last chance. As an important part of FFA and the United States that was built on faith, love, spirit,. But nothing will compare to the memories of the sparkle in your eyes and the warm handshake.

THE $500,000,000 QUESTION

Richard Lyng, president of the American Meat Institute has charged: "The unbelievable fact that it is being done. Without cured meat, the consumer would pay the cost of losing fifty percent of pork products. The Nitrite Safety Council has said that manufacturers of pigs would have a loss of annual income at least.

Roger Mandigo, a meat scientist at the University of Chicago, said that the removal of nitrite ". Eventually, because of the lack of a market, the bottom will also fall out of corn prices. In 1977, the USDA itself said that the ban on nitrites would have an inflationary impact equivalent to a ten to fifteen percent increase in total food costs for consumers.

Now it's up to us, members of the agricultural and business community, and it's up to us too. We must take positive action by writing to Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Carol Foreman; Donald Kennedy, the FDA Commissioner and our own Members of Congress. Our positive actions should encourage the USDA to halt the proposed ban and re-examine and definitively analyze the effects of nitrites.

I agree with Richard Lyng, the president of the American Meat Institute, who is not ready to ban nitrites.

JUDGES

34; The fact is that based on current knowledge there is absolutely no scientific evidence that nitrites used properly in processed meats are harmful to either laboratory animals or humans."

ABILITIES NEEDED FOR LEADERSHIP

Accept others, not for what you want them to be, but for who they are. And above all, the most important quality in developing your leadership skills is to be human. Washington, "Success is not measured by the position one has reached in life, but by the obstacles one has to overcome.

Well, that's like asking "Where would you like to be in ten years, or you, or even you?" The answers are varied, but this is the answer. Those who try and fail are infinitely better off than those who try nothing and succeed beautifully.

Have the National Alumni continue to expand the Washington scholarship program and to encourage the local affiliates to establish their own Washington scholarships

NATIONAL AWARDS PROGRAM

The committee recommends that a method be established that recognizes the nation's top chapters in the National Chapter Award Program by appointing four regional winners and one national winner. Revise Article I, Section 7, to read: "The Chapter sponsored an activity which recognized the outstanding scholarship of its members." The committee recommends that the National Plant Production and Forestry Awards remain unchanged.

The committee recommends that the Board of Directors appoint a committee, composed of state employees and preservice teachers, to investigate the membership issue and determine whether 100% membership should be a goal.

NATIONAL CONTESTS

That strong consideration be given by the Board of Directors to develop a special committee for the purpose of studying the possibility of formulating a National FFA Marketing or Agribusiness Contest to be implemented into a national contest in 1982. That direct payment must be made from the National FFA Foundation to national participants for prorated travel expenses. The medal is preferred for individual winners in National Competitions is willing to have a paperweight, with the provision that the medal is supplemented with a certificate of achievement for the winners of the National Competition.

That the alternate travels with the official national judging team authorized to officiate at the national competition, subject to the following conditions:. The 1979 State Pageants Committee strongly recommends to the State Board of Directors that a report on action taken on the previous year's recommendations be submitted to all committees.

He would advise the various committee delegations on the actions taken on the previous year's proposals.

NATIONAL PROGRAM OF ACTIVITIES

Develop a leadership manual that will include materials and information gathered from the Washington Conference and from the National Officer Team to be sold and distributed by the National FFA Supply Service. Promote funding for the Hall of Achievement at the national convention through the convention booth. The published articles reflect quality rather than quantity regarding local member projects in our national FUTURE FARMER magazine.

The national organization is exploring the possibility of including the FFA Annual Report with the Superior ChapterAward application. National Boards of Directors and National Officers research and disseminate information to states regarding the establishment of agricultural education scholarships.

NATIONAL INFORMATION SERVICES

After careful evaluation of the material available through the Information Services, the committee felt that more than sufficient information was provided and that members were simply not aware of what was available to them. We therefore suggest that the state associations use every available opportunity to inform local members of the services and resources available to them.

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES

We support the proposal that the Washington Leadership Conference Program be expanded to two con- ference sites with conferences running simultaneously, if deemed necessary by the conference director
