THE ISOPODS.

Isopods, collectedby
theHopkins Stanford Expedition, comprise
four species ofwhich two, new
to science, arehere
described.One
of thenew
speciescomes from Clipperton
Island; the otherwas
collected at seaabout 300
miles north ofGalapagos. The two
species previouslyknown
are for the firsttime recorded from
the localities cited.Family TANAID^.
TANAIS STANFORDI
sp. nov.Description
of
]\Iale.— Headvery broad at base, attenuated anteri- orly, where it is produced straight forward, forminga sortof neck.
The
anteriormargin
of this projection has atriangularmedian
point,on
either side ofwhich
the first pair of antennae are inserted in the depressionformed by
themedian
pointand
the acute antero-lateral angles of the projection.The
eyes,which
areblackand
distinct, are situated in these lateral angulations.The
first pair of antennae arecomposed
of three joints each, the first joint verymuch
elongated, about equal to two-thirds the length of the head; the othertwo

are short, subequal, both together but
little longer than half the length of the
first joint.
The
second pair of antennae extend only to the end of the second jointof thefust pair.Both
pairsofan- tennae terminate in long hairs.The
firstthoracicsegment
iscoalesced with the head.The
secondsegment
is short, the nexttwo
equal in lengthand
longer thanthe first.The
last threeare subequal and the longest.There
are fiveabdominal
segments, including the terminal one.The
firstthree are subequal in length; the fourth
is half as long as any of the preceding ones; the terminal
segment
isrounded
posteriorly.
The
three pairsofpleopodsaredensely setose.The
uropodsare single-branched, each branchcomposed
of three joints.The
first gnathopods have thehand
strongly chelate
and
verylarge,thefingerand thumb
gaping.The
finger is longand
curved; thethumb
elongatedand
squarely produced; theupper
surface isprovided with
two
teeth, a slight depression separating them.The
carpus isproduced
at theupper
inner angle in a strong tubercle.The
first pereiopods arevery small, feebleand
almost inconspicuous; the second pair longer, but not quite aslong as the other four pairs,which
are equal in length.Description
of
Feviale.— Head broad at base
and attenuated anteriorly, but not
produced
in a straight process as in the male.The
anteriormargin
has a triangularmedian
point on either side ofwhich
thefirst pair of antennae are inserted in thedepressionformed by
themedian
pointand
the antero-lateral angles.The
eyes are situated as in the male.The
first pairof antennae aremuch
shorterthanthoseof the male.
The
firstjointis longest, equal toone- thirdthe length of the head, thetwo
followingjointsaresubequaland

bothtogetheraslongasthefirst joint.The
second pairofantennas do not quite reach theendof the second jointof the first pair.The
thoracic segments are similar to thoseof the male.The abdomen and
the uropods are also similar to thoseof the male.The
gnathopods have thehand
stronglychelate,but verymuch
smaller than thehand
of the male, the fingerand thumb
not gaping.The
pereio-pods
are all alikeand
of equal length.Color of specimens white with

sp. nov.Description.
— Body
narrow,elongate, threeand
a half times longer than broad.Head
quadrangular, the frontproduced
overand beyond
the basal joints of the antennae, the anteriormargin
ofwhich
is deeply ex- cavate, the lateralmargins
rounded.Eyes
large, oc-cupying
the greater part of the area of the head, but not contiguous.The
firstpair of antennas extend a little be-yond
the posteriormargin
of the head,and
arecomposed
ofeight joints.
The
second pairof antennae are equal in length to the first pair,and
arecomposed
of about four- teenjoints.The
firstand
fifththoracicsegmentsaresomewhat
longer thanany
of theothers.The
epimera are short,not reach- ingbeyond
the posterior angles of their respective seg- ments, butall equalling these segmentsin length.Fig. 61. All of the first five

At
the baseof thissegment
thereisadeepdepression.The
uropods do not surpass the terminal segment.The
outer branch isnarrow,lanceolate; the innerbranchisbroad, truncate; both branches are equal in length.
The
colorof the entirebody
is a dark bluish gray with the excep- tion of the terminalsegment
and the uropods,which
are a light yellow.One
specimenwas
takenfrom
the fin of a dolphin (Coryphcena hippurus)
in 5°N.
