small speciessimilaringeneralto 0.melanotis, but decidedly smaller; color darker; ears wholly black [inner sides clothed with rusty reddish hairs in melanotis]; skull withvery low, flat braincase.Color.

sides, the face, topof head,and
back darkened byamoderate admixtureofblack hairs; underparts dull grayish white, theplumbeous
basal color of the fur showing through;outerandinner sides ofearswell clothedwith deep, glossy black hairs;
feetwhitish, the clawsoflongertoesoverlapped bytuftsof silvery bristles;
tail brownish above, irregularly flesh color below to neartip, which is
duskyall around.

This small, slenderricerat differsfromtypical 0.a.alfaroi, of Costa Rica, mainly in richer,more tawny
coloration. It isclosely alliedto theColombian
form described as 0.palmirxand
the latter is clearlyassignable to subspecific rank, ifitdoesnot prove tobeidentical with 0. gracilis,the typeofwhichcame
from farthernorthin theCauca
Valley.
Comparison
of 0.a. dariensis with specimens from northern Ecuador,assigned to 0. gracilis by Mr. OldfieldThomas, and
referenceto theoriginaldescriptionof thatspecies indicate that the twoare very nearly related.
The
description of the color of 0. gracilis, however, seems to applyto the Ecuadoreanspecimens, or to 0. palmirse, rather thanto theDarien animal. Moreover,theskull of thenew
form is dis- tinguished from that of 0. gracilis, as here understood, bythe greater lateralexpansionof thezygomata.Specimens examined.

respects approaches S. leprus in gen- eralproportionsand
aspect(except coloration)buttheheadissomewhat
narrower, the snout is longerand more
pointed, the second finger is shorterand
the foot longer. It difiers from all the species described beforeby
