I. INTRODUCTION

Reading is one of the important skill between another skills in English language. Reading makes people get new knowledge and insight that can improve intelligence for dealing the various challenge of life in the future. Reading make people one step ahead of other people. According to Kusman (as cited in Muliyawanti, 2022, p. 861), reading comprehension is activity in purpose to understanding context of text.

The importance of reading comprehension for students are making the students get fully understanding about arguments logically, the students are be able to determine main idea, the students be able to read correctly, and the students re-explain the text by using own words. The students’ successful and the students’ learning improvement are affected by the students’ reading comprehension skill. Moreover, reading comprehension is needed by the students to understand the material or explanation in the form of written very well.

Ideally, the students in Senior High School level are expected to master reading comprehension. Because the materials difficulties are higher than previous level. The students must to comprehend correctly the content from text in purpose to prevent from misunderstanding about what they read. It will be difficult for the students to follow the lesson if does not have good ability in comprehending text.

In fact, the students from Senior High School still have low reading comprehension. There are still the students only read the text without understand the purpose and meaning from text. The students difficult to follow learning process because does not have clue what the materials talking about. It cause the students only following learning activity without get anything from lessons. In 2022, Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) reported that Indonesian students got score 359 points for reading skill. This score still far away from another country member of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that got score 472 – 480 points. Score from Indonesia is lower than another ASEAN country such as Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore.

Based on interview that conducted by the researcher on Sunday, December 17th 2023 toward English teacher from tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Abung Timur the researcher found that there are many of tenth grade students still have low ability of reading comprehension. In learning process especially reading subject the students looks are not interest. Moreover, the students are unmotivated during learning reading. This is shown by there are the students make noise when the teacher explain material and when the students give question related with text they cannot answer it. Furthermore, when the teacher asked the students what the purpose of text, the students are confused to do that. Another problem when reading activity is the students are difficult to find simple things such as main idea, conclusion, or only characters from the text. Besides, the students are difficult to retell the text by using their own word. The students can read the text using English but cannot get the meaning of text. Moreover, in daily examination of reading material there are many students got remedial or not get score than passing grade.

As one of skill in English learning, there are many factors that influence the students’ reading skill. One of the factor is because English language is not main language that always use especially at school and cause reading comprehension is difficult to be mastered by the students. Although English is foreign language that not use in daily, the students still be able to master reading skill by having interest and doing practice of reading comprehension. In learning activity, the students must have interest to support the students follow the activities. In reading comprehension, when the students have high interest the students will do more practice to understand context from text they read in order to receive information clearly. The more the students have reading interest the more students get many knowledge and vice versa. In conclusion, reading interest as factor that can encourage the students to improve the students’ reading comprehension ability.

Based on the background above, the researcher interested in investigating the research entitle “The Correlation Between Students’ Reading Interest and

Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text at the Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Abung Timur Academic Year 2023/2024”.

As for the formulation of the problem in this research, what there significant correlation between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension in narrative text at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Abung Timur Academic year 2023/2024? The objectives of this research is to investigate whether there is significant correlation between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension in narrative text at the tenth grade of sma negeri 1 abung timur academic year 2023/2024. As well as the benefits of this research for teachers, this research can help teachers to increase students' reading interest in order to support students' reading comprehension abilities. As well as the benefits of this research for teachers, this research can help teachers to increase students' reading interest in order to support students' reading comprehension abilities and for future researchers. This research can be an additional reference and provide information for future researchers.

II. RESEARCH METHODS

This research uses descriptive quantitative research, according to According to Sugiyono (2012, p. 8), quantitative research is research method that based on positivism philosophy that is used to investigate population or sample, in collect the data use research instrument, analyze the data statistically in purpose to test the hypothesis that has been made. It means, quantitative research is kind of research method that investigate the population or sample, using instrument to collect the data and analyze the data using statistic.

Moreover, Arikunto (2013, p. 37) states that correlational study is study that has purpose to determine whether there is correlation between two variables or not. From the statement above, it can be concluded correlational study is study that to find out whether between dependent and independent variables are correlated or not.

In this research, the researcher used two instrument to measure variable X and variable Y. First instrument was questionnaire to measure the students’

(6)

reading interest (variable X) and second instrument was multiple choice to measure the students’ reading comprehension ability (variable Y).

In this research, the researcher first carried out a normality test, to find out whether the data was normally distributed or not. To calculate the normality test the researcher used the formula Lilliefor Sudjana (2005, p. 466) as follows: Zi = Xi-XS. Second, the researcher carried out a homogeneity test to find out whether the sample was distributed homogeneously or not. In this case the researcher used the homogeneity test formula proposed by Sugiyono (2012, p. 199). The detailed formula is, as follows:

Fobserved = HighestVariance LowestVariance

Third, after the data is distributed normally and homogenous, the researcher analyzed the correlation between variables. The researcher used parametric formula in analyzing the data. Parametric data that was used by the researcher is Pearson Product Moment formula by Arikunto (2010, p. 2013), as follows:

rxy = nΣxy– (Σx)(Σy) √{nΣx² – (Σx)²} {nΣy2 – (Σy)2}

III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The research were investigated in purpose to find out whether students’

reading interest affect the students ability in reading comprehension or not. Based on the theory that explained in previous chapter the researcher assumed reading interest give positive affect toward reading comprehension ability.

The research was conducted on Wednesday, April 3th 2024 at SMA N 1 Abung Timur. The result of data analysis about correlation between the students’

reading interest and the students’ reading comprehension the showed there is significant correlation between those variables. It was proven by value of rcount = 0, 282 (rcount > rtable) and value of ttable = 2, 76 (tcount > ttable). The research finding means that the students’ interest in reading acvitivy give benefit impact toward the studnets’ reading comprehension ability. Having high interest in reading activity

(7)

will improve ability in reading comprehension. The research result also corresponds to hypothesis proposed by the researcher that there is significant correlation between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension at the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Abung Timut academic year 2023/2024.

Moreover, the research findings also corresponds to result finding from previous research which conducted by Risti on 2023 entitled “Reading Interest and Reading Comprehension Ability: The Correlational Study in Secondary Education”. This research used questionnaire and reading test to obtain the data.

The research conducted toward eleventh grade of Senior High School students.

The finding of the research was there is a positive correlation between reading interest and students’ reading comprehension.

In addition, research findings also have similar result with research which conducted by Ewo on 214 entitled “The Correlation between Students’ Reading Interest and Students’ Reading Comprehension”. In this research the researcher used questionnaire and reading test. The research were conducted toward eleventh grade of Senior High School students. The finding of the research was there was correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension.

Last similar research were conducted by Fitria on 2019 entitled “Reading Interest and Reading Comprehension: A Correlational Study”. This research used questionnaire and reading test as research instrument. The research used toward eight grade of Junior High School students. From the research it found that significant correlation between students reading interest and reading comprehension ability.

From the explanation above, there were three research that have similar interest the researcher. The way to obtain the data was same with the researcher which is used questionnaire and reading test. The differences is on grade of the students that were being object of the research. Moreover, from the research findings it can be concluded if this research have same result with all of previous research. It was proven by result of this research shown that the students’ reading interest have correlation with the students’ reading comprehension. Furthermore,

(8)

the research findings shown that students’ reading interest give positive impact to reading comprehension ability.

Reading interest is a condition where the students want to do reading activity without forced by other people. It comes from the students themselves.

Reading interest will make the students easier to understand context of reading.

Reading comprehension is a activity in reading to understand the content of text clearly. The students not only be able to read the text but also be able to accept meaning or message that contained from the text. The students need reading interest to improve reading comprehension because by reading interest will give more spirit for the students to comprehend text quickly. The students will not feel reading is difficult activity but will feel reading as interesting activity to do.

Moreover, reading interest will make the students do reading activity as habit and will give improvement to reading comprehension ability.

IV. CONCLUSION

Based on research that has been conducted regarding The correlation between students' reading interest and reading comprehension in narrative text at the tenth grade of Sma Negeri 1 Abung Timur academic year 2023/2024, the researcher concluded that there is a significant correlation between students' reading interest and students 'reading comprehension at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Abung Timur academic year 2023/2024. From the results of the research in the previous chapter, it can be implied that if the students have high reading interest it will make the students easy to comprehend reading.
