T wo-year J program

Last Saturday. thè IU Board of Trustees met in Indianapolis. Among thè iasues voted upon was thè system -wide School of Joum alism . The Board of Trastees voted and approved a two-year

joumaliam degree program to be eatabìiahed at IU PU I and thè s i i ragionai campuaea. After fìniahing thè two-year program at thè ragionai campuaea, thè studente wul then have to transfer to IU-Bloomington to complete their dagraea.

To quote thè Indiana Daily Student, "The ayatem* aride school will be coordinated by a dean in Bloomington. Either one full-time or two half- time associate deans would aid thè joumaliam school dean." Ralph Holsingar, a joumaliam professor and chairman of thè cornmittee which racommended thè system -wide school, was indiractly quoted by thè IDS as saying thè control over joum alism clasaes offerad at IU P U 1 and thè ragionai campusee was one of thè reasons thè pian was proposed .

A direct quote of Holsingar in thè ID S said, " I think we bava som ething pretty special bere at Bloomington and we would ju st lixe to make aure that we nave that som ething special at

Indianapolis and thè other campuaea. "

The system -wide pian will also astablish a m aaters degree program at IU PU I that will allow professional joum alists in Indianapolis to take advantage of thè courses.

A two-year program at IU PU I will only hamper thè eftorts of IU PU I to astablish a

joumalism major. The new program will possibly mean a Iosa of d a sses all ready In thè curriculum.

N oi only that, but it will possibly mean a loss of faculty currently at IU PU I. The stop toward a system -wide School of Joum alism feels more like a step backwards for IU PU I.

The demand bere is for a joum alism major, not a two-year program. Se varai of thè studente here are forced to attend IUPUI baca use of

convenience, work and family and are not able to

transfer to IU-Bloom ington to finish a degree Realistically, thera is no raason for them to have to go to Bloomington. The demand is here and thè studente ara here. The only thing that isn't here is thè joum alism major—a full, four year.

joum alism major.

If thè program is to be run from Bloomington, then why not use Bloom ington faculty to teech thè courses bere? If thè curriculum is going to be thè same as Bloom ington a. then why not put more than two years nere? If thè faculty and curriculum ara from Bloomington, then why not put thè major bere? What it reelly gets down to.

is thè location of thè program. Even though Bloom ington will be running thè

show ,designating thè changas, hiring thè faculty and controlli i g thè curriculum, theioum alism degras will stili be granted only in Bloomington.

Should fourty m iles make that much

diffarance? Should IU PU I be granted only a two-

E

program? Should thè studente wantmg a nalism major at IUPUI stand for any of this?

answer to all of thè questiona is an emphatic

‘no’!

Thera are channels thè studente and faculty can

*go through to protest thè program. The first step is to talk to Dr. Richard Gray, thè head of thè joum alism deoartm ent at lU-Bloomintrt/w The sacond step is to talk to Vice President Kenneth Qros Louis, also of IU-Bloomington. The third step is to talk to Dr. Ryan, thè president of thè IU

hv stem. The fourth and final step is to talk to thè Board of Trustees.

The two-year joumaliam program will probably be put into effect this fall. That gi vas studente wanting a joum alism major at IUPUI almoet five months to make their desires known. If thè

studente band together and make a positive stand for thè joum alism major, then possibly thè neceasary persona will be reached.

What’s in a name?

To thè editor:

W hat’s in a name like Indiana U ni versityPurdue University at Indianapolis? Perhape a more pertient question is "W hat’s in an acronym like IUPUI?"

Some element of humor seem s to exist in thè grouping of thè initials I-U-P-U-I. Some individuale inaiat on

mispronounring thoee initials to sound like "ooey pooey."

One suggastion for a new name is "State U niversity at Indianapolis." This would cali for an acronym of SU I. How long would it be before someone called it "sooay?" (If any pigs

carne runmng, you pronounced it right.)

Since acronyms seem to bnng out thè Don Rickles in people, perhsp-n un expert on lu K - should be consulted on all propoeals for new names and then accompany ing acronyms

On thè other hand, we could inaisi on a new name only when auch a change would mean improvement in thè school itself We could spend lesa lim e

worrying about acronyms and more about quality education

So, here'a a little lesa "fooey"

and a lot more "dooey.’*

used paint. powder and brushes and in lesa tnan an hour tumed this attractive IUPUI student, Maria Russell, into a sick, old woman.

"Stage make-up is thè same as painting a portralt," says Webb,

"Except that it's three dimensionai." The procesa is neither gentle d o t kind to an actress1 face. The young woman must wince, frown, laugh.

grimace. so that Webb can find on her nearly flawlesa face where her aging lines will someday be.

• The make-up is thick and must be rubbed in and then pushed on brushed to blend into a

believable mask.

Great clouds of dust go up when Webb dusts ampie

werepounded 12-1 and 11*2 in a doubléheader with strong Butler, then were blown out by Marian College. 17*5.

"Our pitching has been thè primaryproblem," Bunnell says of his 1-4 ballclub. The metros have three freshman hurlers in their starting rotation. all of whom ha ve some adju9lment to make in switching from high school to college ball.

‘.'They’re not used to pitching to nine good hitters in a row," cita»

thè coach. “They re losing concentration in thè middle of thè batting order.”

" Although he terms thè infield defense as ‘ejcellent’ and thè overall defense ‘not that bad.' he points out that thè outfield Kas had difficulty. "Our outfield play has not been vary good. There's a lack of

communlcation. Nobody is taking cbarge out there."

Coach Bunnell ia alao concerned with thè team s hitting. Sean Corrigan. hitting .376, and Dave Decker, hitting .364, have been batting

exceptionally well. But thè team needs more power from Steve Dixon. Terry Dorris, Cliff Kelly, and Ralph Skaggs. "The teams collettive batting average is about .190, and we’ve been leaving a lot ot men on base,' notes thè coach.
