Honors Program

Earth Sciences
Application to the program can be completed entirely online and this is the preferred way to apply, although paper copies of forms are accepted. The deadline for registration for the program is January 15 of the year in which you want to start.
Mathematics
This program requires 19 credit hours for course work and 11 credit hours for thesis completion and defense. A maximum of 30 credit hours completed in either a previous degree program, or in non-degree graduate status, may contribute to this requirement, subject to program approval.

Due to the wide range of courses available, it is not always feasible to start the program in the spring semester. Majors in the life sciences (psychology, biology, or chemistry) are especially encouraged to apply, but other degrees will receive full consideration with appropriate course work.

Transfer credit to be used in the non-thesis option may be given for up to 9 credit hours of graduate work completed elsewhere with a grade of B or higher. Up to 12 hours of biology graduate credit taken at IUPUI under graduate nondegree status may be transferred to the thesis or nonthesis options.
Doctor of Philosophy
The dean must be informed of the date and place of the test and the composition of the assessment committee at least two weeks before the test. In some cases, parts of the exam may be delegated to certain other staff, but the final responsibility for the exam rests with the student's assessment committee.
Other Programs
If the preliminary examinations are failed twice, the student may not be given a third examination, except on the recommendation of the examination committee and with the special approval of the Graduate Council. After completing the research and writing of the thesis, the candidate will be given a final examination in which the candidate defends the thesis and demonstrates to the examining committee all the skills for which the title of Doctor of Philosophy is awarded.

Students who have successfully completed two or more years of pre-veterinary instruction (including all required courses) at IUPUI may apply for admission to the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University, West Lafayette. Industrial Co-op Program This full-time program has the same requirements as the thesis option, but includes industrial work experience in the Indianapolis area. The program is part of the Purdue University system-wide doctoral program in chemistry, and as such, identical requirements apply to all campuses participating in the program.

Graduate and teaching assistantships or fellowships are mainly organized by the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. In this case, students apply to the West Lafayette campus and can take courses and conduct research at IUPUI.

The doctoral program is a joint effort between the Biomedical Engineering Programs at IUPUI and Purdue University, West Lafayette. Additionally, the School of Science will not accept certain undergraduate courses for the computer science degree program.

Environmental Science Program
The departmental graduate committee must approve electives outside the Department of Earth Sciences for both options. Students identify an appropriate sub-discipline after their first year and the preliminary advisory committee is transformed into a research committee appropriate to the student's research goals.

The Master of Science with a focus on pure or applied mathematics consists of at least 30 credits. At least 6 of the remaining 9 credit hours must be taken in statistics courses outside the core curriculum.
Minor in Mathematical Sciences
The student must complete at least 45 credit hours of formal coursework, consisting of 33 credit hours of required courses and 12 additional credit hours of elective statistics/biostatistics, of which six credit hours must be at the 600 level and above. A further 45 credits are required and these will consist of courses in a minor area (minimum 9 credits), further electives, independent studies and targeted Ph.D.

Minor in Physics
The department's main research strengths and facilities are in the area of biological physics and magnetic resonance, in experimental and theoretical laser physics and quantum optics and in experimental material physics. All students have access to the IUPUI computer facilities, which include dedicated Unix machines, as well as minicomputers in the department.
Department of Psychology
Some ongoing projects include collaborations with the IU School of Medicine, Indiana Methodist Hospital and other departments in the School of Science. The Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience will offer an interdisciplinary curriculum that draws on biology, psychology, physics, chemistry, computer science, and mathematical science, with the nervous system as a common focus.
