Teaching Certification

Preprofessional Programs

Post-baccalaureate students with a non-science degree may choose to take foundation courses through the School of Science for entry into professional programs. For additional information, see the School of Science Bulletin, Graduate Programs, Graduate Non-Degree Study section.

Premedical Program

Students are encouraged to consult with their major advisor, as well as the School of Science Health Professions advisor, if they are enrolled in a School of Natural Sciences degree program. While there are many professional programs to choose from and we encourage students to apply to multiple programs, our preprofessional advising is aligned with the programs with which we are most closely affiliated – IU in Bloomington, the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, and Purdue University in West Lafayette.

Predental, Preveterinary Medicine, Preoptometry Programs

Most professional programs require not only specific core courses, a strong GPA, and a career-specific or general admissions test, but also experience, including field shadowing, volunteer work, and leadership activities. If the student does NOT have a bachelor's degree, additional courses are required: Students who have completed 2 or more years of high school with a grade of C or better are exempt) Social and Historical Studies 6 cr.

Student Learning Outcomes

The Honors Contract, the most common method for earning Honors credit, allows qualified students to undertake honors work in courses not specifically designed as honors courses by working with the faculty member to create a special honors project for the course. In Track 1 (honors with thesis), students must complete 21 credit hours of honors work, including 6 credit hours outside of biology and 15 credit hours.
