In 1944, the Indiana University Division of Social Service was established by action of the Trustees of Indiana University. The School of Social Work is committed to the goal of advancing the quantity and quality of knowledge that informs professional practice. The multiple locations of the School of Social Work increase the opportunities, but also the demands for service.

Evidence of the characteristics and/or potentials required for competent social work practice as defined in the School's Mission Statement.

Course Requirements

Applications may be submitted any time before May 1 for admission to the following fall semester.

However, it is possible for the second semester internship to be located in a setting outside of the Indianapolis area.

Upon acceptance, it will be decided how many and which credits may be transferred from another school. Normally, such students will spend at least one summer and one academic year in residence at this school.

Course Enrollment for Other Students

Program of Study

In general, the first year of study is common to all students, while the second year offers the opportunity for specialization in practice methods and service delivery systems. Special competence in interpersonal practice or planning and management practice with emphasis on a method/process related to own practice area.

Field Practicum

Students so assigned must also be willing to assume responsibility for the costs associated with a placement outside the Indianapolis area. Students in the Field Practicum follow the work schedule of their field offices during vacation periods and/or semester recess. Field instruction is available only to students admitted as candidates for the M.S.W.

Information about employment in specific career fields is available from placement and dean offices. The School administers some grants and other financial aids directly, and also works with other organizations that administer funds made available to social work students. University housing inquiries and requests for applications should be addressed to: Director of Housing, Indiana University Medical Center, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202.

Interested persons are required to personally check the card file for rental listings. It is impossible to give close estimates, but, in addition to student fees, room and board will run from $300 a month and up; and bus fare, laundry and cases can average $80 a month. Students are also encouraged to participate in the activities of the National Association of Social Workers chapter.

Graduate Courses

Development of knowledge and skills for practicing with an individual, family or small group. The theoretical part presents knowledge and principles for practice with individual client systems; the experiential part focuses on the development of practical skills. Presentation of further knowledge and principles for the practice of planning and management with emphasis on the planning process and financial management in relation to the program area.

Development of knowledge and skills in specific areas of planning and management practice, such as administration and program evaluation. Intensive study of a specific service delivery system and synthesis of lessons learned in related courses. A teaching-oriented experience in social work research in addition to the required research coursework.

A teaching-oriented field experience with approved field instructors in agencies selected based on the student's practice and service concentrations. Generalization and synthesis of lessons learned from the concurrent practicum and examination of issues in social work practice. An opportunity to engage in a self-directed study of an area related to the school curriculum, in which no formal course is available.

Fees

2 Students enrolled in 4 or more credit hours during the semester will be assessed a mandatory fee of. Students enrolled in 3 or fewer credit hours per semester will be assessed a mandatory fee of $4. Students enrolled in 4 or more credit hours per summer session will receive a mandatory fee of $4.

Students enrolled in 3 or fewer credit hours per summer session will be assessed a mandatory fee of $2. 3 Applied music majors who are not regularly working towards a degree will be charged :;'300 for the applied music course. Students enrolled in EDUC M470 Practicurn and or EDUA M550 Practicum (variable title courses) will be assessed a fee of $36 per course per semester.

A fee of $10 for each course will be assessed after the scheduled Drop and Add week, including a course added during an even exchange or a net drop in credit hours, section change, credit hours changed, or credit audit change. 13 students who are registered for 7 or more credit hours per semester, will be assessed $23 for an optional co-op fee. Students who are registered for 6 or fewer credit hours per semester and student spouses, will be assessed an additional $8 per term.

Fee Refund Schedule

The refund policy applies to credit hour fees and any mandatory fees associated with the course, with a separate fee payable by the student. Students must register with the registrar's office and the bursar's office when withdrawing from classes.

Residency Status

Fee Reductions and Financial Aid

To receive fees for dependent children, the full-time employee completes a "Request for Courtesy Fee - Dependent Children," available from the Human Resources Office at each campus, and returns the completed form to the Human Resources Office prior to enrollment for verification of employment. If this application has not been approved and processed prior to registration, the student will be required to pay the full fee and will then be issued a refund if the application is approved. It is the veteran's or veteran's responsibility to enroll in benefits each semester or summer session of enrollment.

It is also the veteran's or veteran's responsibility to notify the Veterans Affairs Office of any schedule changes that may increase or decrease the number of benefits allowed.

Transfer to Other Indiana University Campuses

As your transfer date approaches, check with the campus registrar for information on registration dates and procedures at the other campus. If there is a pre-registration or pre-registration procedure at the other campus, you should plan to take advantage of it. Contact the other campus registrar to determine if you can fulfill any of these responsibilities by phone.

When you arrive at the new campus, please contact your assigned academic advisor or department chair as soon as possible.

Rules Determining Resident and Nonresident

Student Status for Indiana University Fee Purposes

A person classified as a non-resident student can show that he or she is exempt from paying the non-resident fee by clear and convincing evidence that he or she has been a resident (see rule 1 above) in Indiana during the twelve (12) months prior to the first scheduled class day of the semester in which his or her fee status is to be changed. Such student will only be allowed to present his evidence after the expiry of twelve (121) months from the residence qualification date, i.e. the date on which the student commenced the twelve (12) month period of residence. All factors will be considered in combination, and the status of ordinarily resident student will not be the result of acts required or routinely performed by aliens in the state or which are merely an aid to the fulfillment of educational purposes.a) Residence of a student's parent or guardian. .

Ie) The state that issues the student's driver's license. f) Where the student is registered to vote. g) The marriage of the student to a resident of Indiana. [h) Ownership of property in Indiana and outside of Indiana. A Standing Committee on Residence shall be appointed by the President of the University and shall include two (2) students from among those who may be nominated by the student body presidents of one or more of the campuses of the University. A student who is not satisfied with the Registrar's decision has the right to lodge a written appeal with the Standing Committee on Residence within 30 days of receiving written notification of the Registrar's decision, which Committee will hear the appeal. will review in a fair manner and will offer the student a personal hearing upon written request.

If an appeal is not filed within the time limit set forth in this document, the Secretary's decision is final and binding. The decision of the Board shall be final and shall be considered equivalent to the decision of the Trustees of Indiana University. A student or prospective student who fails to apply for resident status in a given semester or session and fails to file a timely appeal (see Rule 8) to the Standing Committee on Residence is deemed to have waived any alleged overpayment of tuition for that semester or session.
