This research presented the strategies of English students department at University of Islam Malang in building character through poetry. Poetry is one type of literary works besides short stories and novel. The objective of this study was to describe the learning strategies used by English students department of sixth semester to build character through poetry.

In conducting the study, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were 15 English students department. The data were collected through doing online questionnaire, online interview, and documentation that was done from January 17th to April 21th, 2021. The data were analyzed using Qomariyah theory (2020) of code types. They are developing and applying codes, identifying themes, and summarizing the data.

According to the findings, students used writing, listening, and or reading a poetry as their strategies to build their character and also the students mention in online interview that by reading a poetry someone could understand and feel what the author wrote.

The findings of this study are likely to be beneficial for the future researcher, who had read this study, can use writing, listening, and or reading poetry in building character. The researcher really suggests that the next research on finding the strategies in building character through poetry will use the newest parameters found by other researcher other than those who have mentioned above.

Penelitian ini memaparkan strategi mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Islam Malang dalam membangun karakter melalui puisi. Puisi merupakan salah satu jenis karya sastra selain cerpen dan novel. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan strategi pembelajaran yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris semester enam untuk membangun karakter melalui puisi.

Dalam melakukan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Subyek penelitian ini adalah 15 mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris.

Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner online, wawancara online, dan dokumentasi yang dilakukan dari tanggal 17 Januari hingga 21 April 2021. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Qomariyah (2020) tipe kode. Mereka mengembangkan dan menerapkan kode, mengidentifikasi tema, dan meringkas data.

Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, siswa menggunakan menulis, mendengarkan, dan atau membaca puisi sebagai strategi mereka untuk membangun karakter mereka dan juga siswa menyebutkan dalam wawancara online bahwa dengan membaca puisi seseorang dapat memahami dan merasakan apa yang penulis tulis.

Temuan penelitian ini mungkin bermanfaat bagi peneliti masa depan, yang telah membaca penelitian ini, dapat menggunakan menulis, mendengarkan, dan atau membaca puisi dalam membangun karakter. Peneliti sangat menyarankan agar penelitian selanjutnya dalam menemukan strategi dalam membangun karakter melalui puisi akan menggunakan parameter terbaru yang ditemukan oleh peneliti lain selain yang telah disebutkan di atas.

1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents some topics related to the introduction of the study.

They are background of the study, research problems, objective of the study, significances of the study, scope and limitation of the study, and the definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of the study

Some scholars, specialists, lecturers and researchers have studied and explored issues and concerns relating to the use of English-language literature as both a foreign language and a second language. Many literary works, such as songs, poetry and short tales, teach English because literary works are very pleasing to pupils, both intellectually and emotionally. (Lazar, 1993) stated that the use of class literature is a successful means of involving a student as an entire person and provides them with good chances of expressing their own ideas, emotions and feelings. Similarly, in Raymond, 2012, literature serves to develop the language skills of the students, since students may enjoy it and also raise the enthusiasm of the students.

Other than short stories or novels, poetry is one kind of literary work.

(Sayuti, 2008) Said that poetry is a kind of linguistic expression that takes account of the aspects of the sounds inside it, which reflects an imaginative and emotional

experience, and the intellectual experience of poetry is derived from its individual and social existence.

Poetry itself has a body and a spirit. In poetry, the body may be syntactically understood, whereas the soul in poetry is seemingly interpretable.

(Austria, 2015) states that the visible components of poetry's physical structure are syntactic elements, which include: 1. diction, 2. imagination, 3. concrete words, 4.

figurative language, 5. versification, and 6. typography. The somaticizing components of poetry have been the inner structure or meaning included in the poem: theme, feelings, tone and mood, a massage or moral worth. The language of poetry can have many distinct meanings and has a free form.

The development of Indonesian poetry has progressed at times. From a historical viewpoint, the tendency is visible. Pujangga Baru, Amir Hamzah, contains various Chairil Anwar poems, which H.B. Jassin categorizes asthe oldest poetry. Other names include: W.S Rendra, Abdul Hadi World Cup, Goenawan Mohammad, Sapardi Djoko Damono, Acep Zamzam, Afrizal Malna, Pinurbo and many more.

Figure of speech that prevails in a literary work, especially in poetry, are simile (direct comparison), metaphors (indirect comparison), and (inanimate objects are given a human form).

The construction of characters (Alexander, 1965) said that the term

"character" is identical to "personality." Personality, according to him, is a characteristic, a specific trait, or a characteristic of someone, depending on their social formation. (Kennedy X., 1991) emphasized the urgent need for the

development of character education as a national commitment to Indonesia's students: a) education of nature and culture cannot be separated from national education and must be fully developed as part of the cultural process; b) work toward revitalizing national education necessitates a national movement to foster a spirit of unity.

According to Mustofa (2014), there are three goals of character education in Indonesia; 1) to develop students potentials with enable them to possess good attitudes , 2) to develop citizens whose characters are in accordance with the values found in Indonesia’s five principles, 3) to develop citizens’ potentials that promote self-esteem, strong nationalism, and humanity.

The aimed is to develop Indonesian people, especially the young generation, with a good education system.

In this case, the researcher wanted to investigate what strategies that students used in building character through poetry for sixth semester students of English Department at University of Islam Malang. The researchers chose this semester because they had previously studied poetry. They also analyzed the character building in the poetry. It means they are familiar with poetry, and poetry can even help students build their own characters.

In this case, from the previous study investigated students learning strategies in building character through literature that included; debate, film, and creative writing. So, in this research, the researcher focused on used poetry as literatured to develop students and investigated what strategies students used to develop their character.

1.2 Research Problem

The research problems of this study can be stated as follows:

 What are the learning strategies used by English sstudents department of sixth Semester to build character through poetry?

1.3 Objective of the study

The objective of the study is:

 to describe the learning strategies used by English students department of sixth semester to build character through poetry

1.4 Significance of the study

The study can be useful for the lecture and the university students. The teachers can design appropriate material for their students in order to improve their teaching skill. Meanwhile, the student learning strategies can help student to develop their ability in writing a poem and build character in poetry.

The study also can be useful for future researchers, who have read this study to discover how the topic builds character via poetry and how to apply character in daily life.

1.5 Scope and limitation of the study

The target of this research is English department students in a class who were in sixth semester. The research participant is limited on the students who got

A score in Poetry. The students in a class were 30. The researcher found that only 15 students were related to the criteria.

Limitation of the study is the researcher could not directly observe because of pandemic Covid-19 situation. In addition, the researcher only gave questionnaire via Google form, online interview, and documentation to one of five class of sixth semester.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms

Important words are defined in order to prevent misunderstandings and ambiguity. There are some words that have to be defined in this study.

Poetry is a literary work that has a free form and a form of speech and also a structure of character.

Strategies are the strategies that are used by the learners to build characters in their poetry that they already make. In this case, it means the strategies are used by the university students to make a best character through poetry.

Character means that pupils develop their character by means of poetry.

In poetry there are a lot of characters. Religious, honest, tolerant, tolerant, hard- working, independent, creative, democratic, curious, nationalistic, patriotic, sporty, respectful, inclusive, communicative, peace-loving, educative, caring, compassionate, empathic, responsible

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

This chapter consists of conclusion and suggestions. In conclusion, the researcher gives brief conclusion related to the findings and discussion from the previous chapter. Further, the researcher gives suggestions related to this study for the future researchers.

5.1 Conclusion

Based on the findings and discussion from the previous chapter, it can be concluded that the subject had already fulfilled the statement of online based questionnaire of building characters through writing, reading, and listening to the poetry and also from online based interview. Poetry is a literary work that is arranged through words into a sentence which is arranged beautifully based on what they see and their experience, usually a poetry draws feeling of the writer and there was a massage in that poetry, so the meaning of a poetry was contained the feeling of a writer which the words are contained a figure of speech.

The subject was one opinion with the questionnaire that their strategies to build character through poetry is by writing, listening, and or reading a poetry, it’s can help their character build such as; tolerant, creative, hardworking, respectful, communicative, and peace loving. Based on online voice note by WhatsApp, the subjects mention that by reading poetry can help the characters of someone be a

Good character because by reading we know the meaning and understand the felling of writer in poetry. From 18 characters of poetry there are some of characters that they always applied in their daily life that are; religious by always obey the rules of Allah, nationalistic by always loving the country, following ceremonies, and always maintaining the existing culture in Indonesia, and peace loving by love yourself. And also there are some characters that the subjects still tried to be apply in their daily life such as; honest by tried to always saying honestly, hardworking by tried to always hard working to reach their dreams, creative by make a new thing with looking for literature or references from internet or YouTube, tolerant by respect other people opinions, and disciplined by tried to always on time and have a good time management.

5.2 Suggestion

There are some suggestions based on the study's findings. The first is for the instructor or lecturer, as well as future researchers, who have read this study, to discover how the topic builds character via poetry and how to apply character in daily life. The researcher really suggests that the next research on finding the strategies in building character through poetry will use the newest parameters found by other researcher other than those who have mention above. It is expected that the next researcher will renew their references or parameters that used in this research, in order to there will be a difference and new update rather than this research. The researcher also suggests that the next researcher not only focus on the strategies in building character through poetry, but also on the values of poetry as an addition in order to make the result of the next study richer than this research.
