The objective of the research is to find the influence of students' learning style towards their achievement in learning English in SMP Negeri 3 Bontomarannu. Based on the previous description, the researcher interested in conducting a research titled "Learning style of students using Neil Fleming's VARK model".
Problem Statements
Objectives of the research
Many teachers ignore the possibility that students are not learning because they are not given the opportunity to apply their own learning style in the classroom.
Scope of the Research
The differences between the previous research and this study are only in the use of three models of learning style, namely visual learning style, auditory learning style and kinesthetic learning style. While in this study they just want to know the learning style mostly used by the students.
Definition of Learning style
It can be understood that the visual learning style is the preferred way of learners to acquire, use and reflect on knowledge about the visual sense. To summarize the above theories, the auditory learning style is the preferred way for students to obtain information through hearing.
Learning Style in Learning English (Language)
With the kinesthetic learning style you have to move a lot. It's hard to just sit still in one place, you feel restless and your legs may shake or even spontaneously leave the chair if you have to sit for hours. The difference in language proficiency of students can be influenced by the different learning styles of students. Every teacher cannot give every student the same treatment, given the different learning styles of students.
Teachers must be able to understand the learning style of each student, so that the subject matter can also reach students with different characteristics and learning styles so that the teaching and learning process is effective. Learning style is the tendency of a person to use a certain way of learning in order to learn well. The importance of students' learning style observed in the English learning process is that if the teaching style of teacher matches the students' learning style, the result of their learning will be better Banner and Rainer in Arsyad.
In the same tone, Oxford adds in Arsyad that if the learning style and strategy of the students are well matched with the teaching method and learning material used by the teacher, then this will be very possible for the students.
Relation Between Learning Styles with Teaching and Learning
Relation VARK (Visual, Aural, Reading or Write and Kinesthetic) Learning Style Model
When a student shows more reflection in relation to learning strategy, this illustrates the existence of personal characteristic learning style Yusoff (2007). This is in line with the views of Friedel and Rudd in Yusoff (2007) who state that an individual can have more than one learning style or also known as bimodal. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Education (2008), there are two learning style models that are commonly used; Dunn & Dunn and VARK.
VARK learning style model is learning style that has been changed from VAK model to VARK learning style by Fleming in 2006. While kinesthetic mode leans more towards accepting learning based on behavior such as touch, feel, see and listen. However, in the study conducted by Fleming and Baume (2006) shows that the teacher's teaching would reflect the tendency of their own learning style compared to that of the students.
While research by Thomas et al. 2002) on the other hand shows that learning style is important to increase the understanding and performance of each subject. 2004) added by saying that learning based on VARK learning style model provides a medium for self-knowledge and the exploration of opportunities in classrooms, thus making a more productive learning experience and enjoyment among students.
VARK Learning Style in Learning Process
Based on each mode's trend, researcher hopes to conduct a study to obtain students' feedback on computer-based learning. However, there was also an opinion stating that teaching approaches used by teachers are essential to attract students' interests. According to this theory, students have distinctive learning styles, so any system built on this theory must vary its teaching strategies (Ismail 2008).
While according to the Preferred Sensory Modality Theory by Ismail (2008) it states that each student has different receptive abilities that are based on certain senses. Fleming and Mills (1992) also expressed that multimedia course strengths are based on the VARK learning style model, developed from the aspect of its ability to act as a catalyst and framework for image and discussion, through exercises in learning such as note taking, notation, and read for tests and exams. At the same time, students also experience multimedia courses that are based on the VARK learning style model during the learning process through activities that can promote their cognitive and motivation.
However, teachers are unable to prepare appropriate teaching materials according to the needs of different learning styles of students due to the time factor.
The advantage of learning style
Conceptual Framework
The researcher focuses on the students' learning style towards their performance and the students' learning style in learning English. Language learning style developed by Neil Flemings; there four types of learning styles, they are visual learning style, auditory learning style, reading/writing learning style and kinesthetic learning style. The quantitative data was collected through questionnaire, which aimed to identify the students' language learning style.
The questionnaire was distributed to all participants in this research and to find out that the students' language learning styles affect their English achievement, taking the final grade a meter to see the students' achievement related to the learning style of students' language. The subject of this research are 26 VII C students at SMP Negeri 3 Bontomarannu, while the object of the research is the students' learning style using Neil Fleming's VARK model. The researcher was given a class which is class VII C, this class consisted of 26 students.
The researcher chose this class because the class represented several classes, the different types of learning styles used by the students in the class could represent other classes, and the students in this class well appreciated and supported this research.
Research Instruments
The questionnaire in this study is a Likert scale questionnaire that provides students with five response options: Strongly agree (Sangat Setuju, SS), Agree (Setuju, S), Neutral (Neutral. The purpose of using observation as a research method is to determine the behavior of students in school and at home. In addition, the purpose of the observation is to determine what form of guidance teachers and parents give to students.
The achievement of student results was intended to reveal the result of students during the lessons taken in one of the semesters. Each variable is assessed using a Likert scale that consisted of 5 alternative options: I strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree and strongly disagree. The researcher would analyze the students in the learning process to collect the data related to this research.
Documentation is used for obtaining data about the final value of English in the list of values that is in the subject teacher and to take a picture.
Technique of Collecting the data
In order to collect data about the students' achievements in the results, the researcher will request the teacher's document during the lessons in one of the semesters.
Technique of Data Analysis
A student's auditory learning style coefficient score for the X2 variable is -174 and has a negative sign. This shows that the average score on students' auditory learning style has an opposite relationship with students' English performance. The student reading/writing learning style coefficient score for the X3 variable is -554 and has a negative sign.
It shows that the mean score of students' reading/writing learning style has a relationship with students' English performance. This means that if the total of students' kinesthetic learning style increases every unit, students' English performance will increase by 391, but another independent variable is constant. The influence of students' learning style on their English performance is visual learning style, T = 3.431 P = 000 indicates that the four learning style categories.
It means that the visual learning style of students affects their English performance.
DISCUSSION
The influence of students' learning style on their English performance The learning styles influence students' performance. It can be concluded that the result of the influence of students' learning style on their English performance is visual learning style, T = 4.275 indicates that the VARK learning style categories. The result of by ANOVA shows, F = 5.807 indicates that the VARK learning style categories are significantly different based on their grade point average.
However, the influence of students' visual and kinesthetic on their English performance has a significant influence, but the dominant one is visual learning style. Based on the results of research done known that the trend first grade student learning styles on English subjects is Visual Learning Style percentage of 42.30% or 11 students in the medium category, Auditory learning. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the most dominant students choose Visual Learning Style as their learning style.
So it could be provided by the learning style of the first grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Bontomarannu was a visual learning style.
SUGGESTION
Based on the result of using SPSS 21, the researcher found that students' learning style influenced their performance in learning English among the First Grade students of SMP Negeri Bontomarannu. The teacher should be aware of students' different learning styles, so they should apply various kinds of teaching methods to enable students to adapt their learning style.
