The title of this thesis is “Students’ Perceptions of The Characteristics of Effective English Language Teachers”The purpose of writing this final project is to fulfil one of the final assignments for a Bachelor of Education at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap karakteristik guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian survei. Subyek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII MTs Muhammadiyah Karangkobar dengan sampel 78 siswa. Kuesioner yang digunakan untuk pengumpulan data berisi empat kompetensi. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa persepsi tentang karakteristik guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif adalah guru yang memberikan kegiatan pembelajaran yang bervariasi dan menyenangkan serta menggunakan media pembelajaran. Selain itu, guru harus memahami materi, dapat menjelaskan materi dengan baik, dan dapat menilai siswa secara adil.

Diperlukan hubungan yang baik dengan setiap siswa dan guru bisa memposisikan diri sebagai pendidik, orang tua, atau teman dekat. Selain itu, siswa beranggapan bahwa guru harus memiliki semangat mengajar dan humoris, sabar, ramah, dan tegas jika siswa melakukan kesalahan.

This study aimed to determine students' perceptions of the characteristics of effective English language teachers. This research was survey research. The subjects were students in grade eight of MTs Muhammadiyah Karangkobar, and the sample consisted of 78 students. The questionnaire used for data collection contains four competencies. This study concluded that the perceptions of the characteristics of effective English language teachers were teachers who provide varied and fun learning activities and use learning media. Besides, teachers must understand the material, can explain the material well, and can assess students fairly. A good relationship with each student and position themselves as educators, parents, or close friends are needed. Moreover, students assumed that the teachers must have enthusiasm for teaching and be humorous, patient, friendly, and firm if a student makes a mistake.
