Statement of Problem
Objective and Significance of Research
Scope and Setting of Research
To prevent misunderstanding, the researcher has limited the study of English learning to students at Mts Negeri 1 Mataram. Furthermore, students in the English program have many different ways of learning to listen by using passages. They not only accept the knowledge from the teacher's explanation, but also have the initiative to learn English, especially listening by using podcasts independently.
Review of Previous Research
This research had similarities and differences with my research, both researches focus on students' perception of using podcasts on listening skills. The result of this research was then (1) that the students enjoyed using podcasts in listening class because a podcast is easy to use. This research had similarities and differences with my research focus on the effect of podcasts on listening skills.
Theoretical Framework
When they have good perceptions of the learning process or learning activity, it will lead them to learn the material well and be successful in learning. On the other hand, if they have bad perceptions about the learning process or the learning activity, it will make it difficult for them to find their interests in learning and will lead them to failure20. Furthermore, in the classroom, students learn through dialogue, and one of the most important aspects of effective communication is listening.
As students engage in the listening process, they try to accept and convert verbal messages into mental images. It also resulted in the practically exclusive use of monologue for listening exercises until recently. There are four listener roles in conversation according to Bell's framework in Nobert Schmitt: .. someone who is spoken to and has the same right to speak as the other people in the room.
This can be demonstrated in the human need to use all five senses to learn truth or pieces of information. The quality of the sound system can disturb the students' listening in listening comprehension32. 2) Accent. An accent is one of the important things to know the type of accents when someone speaks English.
The Educational Benefits of Using Podcasts for Listening Skills Podcasts help develop listening skills to learn a new language and basic cultural qualities.
Research Method
In this research, the researcher conducted interviews and questionnaires with students, the respondents of the researchers in this research. In this research, the researcher conducted research on students of the third year of the English study program in the academic year 2022/2023. In data collection, the researcher used interview and questionnaire to gather relevant data for this study.
The researcher used a questionnaire to collect data in the study as they handed this questionnaire to students. And then the researcher recorded the students. The data is documented in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and voice recordings spoken by students. The researcher used this step after collecting the data to analyze the data such as selecting the appropriate data relevant to the case or transforming data into another form such as.
After the data is condensed and displayed, the researcher draws conclusions based on the result of the data analyzed. The validity of the data was carried out to confirm whether the researcher conducted the research was really scientific research as well as to test the data obtained. Therefore, the researcher investigates the truth again by digging in-depth information and by asking the results of the truth.
Then the interview guided the researcher to get in-depth information about the student's listening perception of podcasts.
Organization of Discussion
By reading, the researcher's insight becomes broader and sharper, so that it can be used to check whether the data found is correct or not. Reference material is existence support to follow the data found by researcher. Recording helps data in qualitative such as cameras, video cameras, recording equipment voice is very necessary to support the credibility of data the researcher has discovered, preferably the submitted data should be accompanied by photographs or authentic documents so that they become more reliable.
The researcher explained the research background, problem statement, objective and significance of the research, scope and setting of research, review of previous research, theoretical bases, research method and finally the systematic of discussion in this chapter. In this chapter, the researcher discussed the process of analyzing research findings based on theoretical foundations.

The pedagogical merits and drawbacks of using podcasts to learn
The merits of the podcast method are: firstly, I as a student can listen and recognize the new vocabulary. Second, this method is very fun, because this method we hear a lot of English conversations in my class and especially in my environment, it is so rare to see and hear English conversations, so I am very grateful to be able to participate . in this program". 70. I think that the merits of using the podcasts that have been learned, I know more and more vocabulary and correct pronunciation". 71.
There are many benefits, the first being that we can practice our listening skills to become even better. The second is that we can improve our pronunciation, which was not right before, so that it is more accurate, because we can listen to it directly in the podcast, because natural speakers speak directly, so we can listen to the pronunciation directly. The third is learning to use podcasts, which are fun and enjoyable, so we are excited about learning."74.
The results are based on the interview above, from the teaching and learning process conducted using podcasts. Based on the results of the interviews in answers from question number 6, in addition to merits, students also have disadvantages in learning English listening by using podcasts. The disadvantages are that sometimes the speed of the sound is faster, so we cannot understand the sound.
The results based on the interview above, the problem faced by students was that there were speakers that were sometimes unclear, sometimes from audio or video, sometimes it crashes, some students of class IX-1 make noise that other students' disturbed focus, and unfamiliar accents to listen to.
